I had a goblet of Ommegang Brewery's Abbey Ale today.

Close enough?

We need a spoiler-free thread for GoT it seems.  Or just people considerate enough to not give the game away.  Even if we had a spoiler-free thread, someone would fudge it up.

This is a spoiler free thread, but people forget.  I do too sometimes.

Yes Jaime's character makes a turn-around.  Around this point in the books I'm thinking WTF, I like Jaime?!  Shaking my fist at GRRM.

Let's just get all the moments out of the way first so I can be efficient with the emotes.

"I can be your family."

"Could you bring back a man without a head? Not six times. Just once."
"I don't think it works that way, child."

"By what right does the wolf judge the lion?"

"I don't ever want to leave this cave, Jon Snow. Not ever."
(Seriously, guys, don't leave the cave. This will all end in tears.)

:crying:

Uh, also, now that Jon and Ygritte's spelunking is out of the way ...

Posted Image

With that out of the way ...

Let's hear it for Roose Bolton, the Troll in the North!

Olenna seems to be this season's Littlefinger, meeting everyone of importance, although at least they're all in King's Landing. This is not a bad thing, mind you.

Blackfish being Blackfish. 'Nuff said.

Somebody's probably mentioned this before, but nice juxtoposition using the same music for Theon's botched execution of Ser Rodrik for Robb's (somewhat overdue) execution of Lord Karstark. Bit of a change from the books since Robb has trouble too, but if they're intentionally trying to contrast Robb and Theon this may suit their purposes better.

Selyse ... the fetuses in the jars things makes it seem like they're trying too hard, but I can't say that's not something Martin wouldn't have put in if he'd thought of it at the time. Although it does makes Mel's quest for king's blood off on the mainland curious.

Moving on. Top notch to the makeup team for Shireen. If Patchface has been removed, then unless it turns out George has big plans for him, it's irrelevant and leaves more time for Shireen and Davos. Fine by me.

Poor Stannis, though. He so very clearly loves his ridiculously sweet daughter, but he's just got no idea how to express it.

The bath scene ... what else is there to say, really? If they didn't get this right it would have screwed up Jaime's entire character arc. Fortunately, they hit a home run with it.

Also, best rear shot of the episode goes to Gwendolin Christie.

Best for last, dat sword fight. It's probably got an unfair advantage, seeing as one of the swords is ON FIRE and all, but that was easily the best sword fight of the episode ... and this may well be the best episode of the show thus far.

EDIT: Also, HA HA Cersei.

Loras being the heir to Highgarden and being betrothed to Cersei is a big change, but if Loras ultimately winds up Kingsguard this will have no actual effect on the story, and in the mean time it was worth it to see that smirk wiped off Cersei's face mid-gloat.

Ser Jorah was a Sir in that show, too. And nobody liked him much there either.

Stannis and Melisandre having sex to create a shadow baby isn't OOC- thats how it went down in the books. Heavily implied, if I'm remembering correctly.

I don't deny he slept with Melisandre, just that he wouldn't have thrown her on a table and had his way with her in such a sleazy manner - he seems like the kind of man who would approach the situation much more formally.

This episode...my feels have been slain. Almost every single moment was one that induced feels, from stannis and his daughter, to stannis daughter and davos, to jamie and brienne, to jon and the wilding chick, to the goddamn unsullied, and even robb and the entire northern plight. Too many feels.

Anyway, anyone else scared of berric? Because now he completely terrifies me. I find his coming back from the dead much creepier than stannis's wifes fetus show.

Also, jorath is acting like a major douche, my god.

But tywin is still the man, not taking **** from either of them after both tyrion and cersei have been scheming their own agendas behind his back for so long. I contribute his snapping to finally going, "That's it, this **** ends now" and laying down the law for his two rebellious failures.(His POV on the situation.)

I don't think Jorah was being a jerk there, he was trying to defend himself after Barristan's "BTW Westeros hates you because you were a slave trader, so you might have to quit" remark.

I do like the contrast from Jaime to Barristan. I must admit that I sympathize more with Jaime.

I love the Lightning Lord, he's a great character in the books. Dies six times, losing more and more of himself with every revival, fights with a f*cking flaming sword.

There's another character with a similar condition who's more frightening though. Ooooh, spoiler (if you've not read the books).

And yeah, they hit Jamie's scene out of the park, which is great, and it really captures his character. I miss Vargho Hoat, but the Kingslayer's story has been top notch so far, thanks in large part to Gwendoline Christie who's one of those people who is the role they play, like Sean Bean or Peter Dinklage or Conleth Hill or Masie Williams or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau or Charles Dance or Kit Harrington or Emelia Clarke or Michelle Fairley or Lena Headey or Richard Madden or Iain Glen or Rory McCann or Jack Gleeson or Sophie Turner or just about every actor in this series so far.

Pfffft. Evil? Best character to play the Game of Thrones, and effectively outplay everyone in the 7 Kingdoms. Also This. When another character has a song created for them, then they will reach Tywin Lannister status in my estimation.

And who are you, the proud lord said,
that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat,
that's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red,
a lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp,my lord,
as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall,
with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.

Littlefinger on the other hand...

Personally, I had no trouble with Tywin not recognizing Arya.
On the other hand, I had many troubles with him laughing and realizing Arya must be the daugther of some northern lord and not hold her hostage.

I wouldn't say he's the most evil, but he was the one to tell the Mountain to set the riverlands on fire, basically condemning much of the countryside to famine.  In fact, he holds the responsibility for much of the Mountain's actions as he basically holds the leash.  SPOILER(?)  The books go into great detail about trying to discover who is responsible for the death of certain royal children.

And what's with the hate for Jorah.  He's definitely not my favourite character, but I like him well enough.  It's just that his whole being is consumed with Daenarys now, and he'd do anything to stay by her side.  Selmy basically told him he'd have to take a hike.  Frankly, I don't really care much either way for the characters across the Narrow Sea from Westeros.

Meh. Setting the Riverlands on fire and living off the land of your enemy is a tactic as old as war itself. Lord Tywin Knows that doing it forces the Tully's to fight him in open battle, which he wants, because he'll win, and his armies under his son, Jamie, did smash the River Lords and laid siege to Riverrun. Or the minor lords of the Riverlands will either capitulate and swear alligence to Casterly Rock to spare their lands or fight the Lannister forces piece- meal, where he has an overwhelming superiority in numbers.

The death of the royal children was the responsibility of Lord Tywin, but as Robert needed their death to secure his throne, if Tywin Lannister hadn't have given the order, Robert Baratheon would have had to do it himself.

The acts of the Moutain and Amory Lorch are because they're Tywin's mad dogs, he said it himself, Tywin ordered the children's deaths, but it was done far too brutally for his taste. Amory Lorch was a fool, and the Mountain, didn't spare the Martel princess, simply because Tywin didn't think of her and gave no order to kill her or spare her one way or the other.

It's only Ned Stark with that inflexible obstinate sense of honour that actually thinks the Lannisters are evil. Same with Stark and Selmey's idea that Jamie Lannister should have been stripped of his rank and exiled to the Wall. Because he broke his vow, by not killing his father and killing a mad man.

I never understood how anyone could really think of jamie being a kingslayer as a bad thing, seeing as the mad king was someone who anyone else could have slain and been called a hero.

Tsk tsk.

It is viewed as a bad thing because he broke his word.  He swore to protect the King with his life, regardless of how good/bad/crazy the King was. Because he broke his oath to the King, one could extrapolate and say that Jaime is a liar, a fraud, and incapable of keeping his word. In part, he certainly is, but to call him nothing but that would be an over-simplification of his character. However, people tend to cling to over-simplifications, and so Jaime, in the public eye, is first and foremost an oathbreaker.

It is not questioned that the Mad King was awful. However, it is also not questioned that if you make an oath, you should keep it.
