I've been intentionally avoiding the series, because I prefer to watch stuff like this after it comes out on blu ray..

But out of curiousity, whats the sword fighting like so far? Is it the typical Hollywood bash em' with a meat cleaver type of sword play? Or did they actually train the actors how to hold and wield a sword properly?

There hasn't been much yet.  However, I understand that they did in fact do training with the actors, even the girl who plays Arya.  In fact, the training scene when she meets Syrio Forel was very well done.

Those two looked like they were having so much fun.  I love Maise Williams.  I cry sobby tears every time she and Ned are together onscreen.

Those who have HBO, you can get HBO shows online now at hbogo.com.  They have the past episodes and also get an early showing of the new episode on Sunday.

Totally hooked by the series! Never read the books though. How many are there? How many seasons could be expected?

And yes, Sean Bean is an awesome actor and works very well in fantasy roles. And his training as Boromir has its advantages. Sword fighting in PJ's trilogy was awesome and the coach was a master swordsman. I doubt a production like Game of Thrones would settle for anything lesser. The spadachin on the 3rd episode looks trained enough.

I read most of the books more than once and I didn't get the sense that Tyrion was any more deformed beyond what we see in Peter Dinklage.

Eh, I'm not that eager to give poor Tyrion the benefit of doubt here. First(and one of the longest)  portrayal  of his  appereance is delivered in Jon's opening POV. It is made quite clear there are numerous reasons why he is hard to look upon. I don't remember ever reading  anything that would suggest his hideous appereance was merely some combination of abnormally modest height and self loathing. Only compliments he ever gets come from who res he buys.

All in all though, managing a casting that is this goddamned perfect defies laws of nature<3 It should be impossible to have this many child actors in major roles with none of them being annoying as hell.

Does anyone know how the ratings for episodes 2-3 have looked?

Assuming George R.R Martin somehow manages to stay alive long enough, there will be (at least) 7 books. 4 are released already with 5th coming out this summer. HBO has ordered 2 seasons so far. Considering the extravagant price tag the production has and HBO's habot of axing series well before their time, I'd consider it a small miracle if we ever saw more than 2-3 seasons. Enjoy it while it lasts I says:p

The ratings have been good but not stellar. Episode three was the first time there was an uptick, which is impressive also because it was aired around the time certain world events were hitting the airwaves. Still, it would be nice to see them higher, considering the price tag.

Edit: link to Screen Rant on the ratings

Cheers, very interesting if slightly depressing read. Here's hoping everyone and their mom will buy the DVD boxsets.

As long as I get to see what eventually happens to Joff onscreen, I will be contented.

They renewed the show for a second season after the premiere of the first episode. It has to be doing well. 2.2 million is probably pretty good for HBO ratings.

I don't follow ratings too closely, so forgive my (perhaps) ignorance.

I don't expect this to be a ratings monster to start with.  It's fantasy, which often immediately turns a number of people off for some reason.  My hope - as I do absolutely love the books - is that the ratings gradually grow as people who are NOT fantasy fans, and those who have never heard of the series, begin to hear talk about it - talk which will grow if ratings do.  The kind of show where ratings at the end of Season 1, beginning of Season 2, meet that level of expectation that HBO has.

That said, I don't watch a lot of HBO series.  I never watched the Sopranos (didn't have HBO at first, didn't care to catch up when I did), and don't watch Entourage (which I think is HBO, right?) and others.  I've caught some of True Blood, but I've lost interest.

But does anyone know, or can anyone link to, how this compares to other such series, such as Sopranos, Entourage, True Blood, etc, particularly in the early going?  I'd expect that such shows have a history of rising ratings, no?

Here you go:

Last week Game of Thrones premiered to only so-so ratings, with 2.2 million people watching the first airing, meaning it had a stronger debut than True Blood (1.4 million), but half as good of one as Boardwalk Empire (4.8 million). HBO was quick to renew the show anyway (for reasons explained here), and this week's audience matched last week's almost exactly: 2.2 million viewers tuned in at 9 p.m. and 732,000 more at 11 p.m. (Last week, there were 755,000 viewers at the eleven.) This is a solid showing— the show didn't lose anyone and could still grow via word of mouth.  And, if one needed proof that HBO cares about more than ratings, the
second season of Treme premiered to an audience of 605,000.

link to source

According to Wiki, the Sopranos debut was 3.45 million and had risen to 5.22 for the first season finale.  They note that Nielsen changed the ratings scheme in recent years, so these figures may be too high.  By 2nd season it was averaging 6.62 million per ep.

I'm afraid that there will be a fall-off in 2nd season due to.... certain events, affecting certain well-known people.

Thnx Addai.

I'd say the numbers aren't so bad for a fantasy series, but then I'm not in TV.

I do hope it grows. I know what you're referring to, but I'm hoping the interest remains, even if it's in a "now what do they do?" way.

Same here. It's HBO I'd assume people would give it a shot because it's HBO.

But honestly if you can watch The Sopranos or Boardwalk Empire. The Sopranos is a fantastic show, my most fave of anything ever, and Boardwalk Empire had a great first season.

Is anyone else (that read the books) starting to have . . .concerns, let's say . . . .about the direction of the series?

I was unimpressed with Ghost's appearance. It was nice to see him again finally, but his footage felt spliced into the scene. That hurt it. Ghost aside, I thought this was the weakest episode so far. The pacing felt off throughout. Great closing scene, though.

I wanna nom ghost's face! <3 (in a manly way of course)

Acting really was top teir this episode, even if it was a bit slower then the others. They couldn't have picked a better actor for the imp though, wow he is good.

Like they might diverge from the novels to a degree that brings the story into an alternate universe where nothing is quite the same as we know it? Because I had that feeling tickling my subconscious tonight. :bandit:

I will take whatever Ghost I can get at this point.

The only parts I was scratching my head at were those not in the book, mainly the Viserys- Doreah scene. I gather they are setting up the dragons, but you'd think the dragons' eggs would be enough to do that?

The scene where Littlefinger tells Sansa about the Cleganes was a little weird. It's like from Heroes where Hiro stopped time for everyone else while he told his story.

How so? They have to change some stuff from the books. Although I did feel they should have let the Hound tell his story instead of Littlefinger.

This, kind of.

I know they're using essentially alternate scenes (not the same as the book, in other words) to give us background and information that was given in the books, and for the most part, they're doing it rather well.

It's just . . . hmmm, trying not to be too spoiler-ish here - - - a certain issue, which was somewhat suspenseful in the books, seems to be kind of getting thrown in our faces - repeatedly.  I'm becoming concerned that some of ths suspense and mystery about certain things which I thought integral to the book, and a large part of why I enjoyed it, are being removed in favor of a more direct approach.

I can elaborate privately if anyone who read the books is not sure what I'm talking about, I just don't want to spoil too much for those who haven't, so I know this comes across as rather cryptic.

Yes. Yes! The whole Viserys scene made me go... uh-buh? I think you hit on what bothered me about this episode. It felt like there was too much foreshadowing and exposition bogging things down. There were decent scenes, and then there were stuff like Viserys and Littlefinger's storytime that felt like filler. I should not be too hard on the showrunners, though. Realistically there is no way to squeeze in an entire book's details into a cable show season.

Edit: I think my concerns may parallel TJPags. They might not be identical. Six episodes to go, right? It will be interesting to see where it goes...

"The seed is strong"?  They're rather hitting you on the head with that.  It took me a long time in the books to cotton on.

Theon is taking a more central role.  *mumbles*

Loved seeing Hodor.

I love the opener so much- anyone else think of Melisandre with that gyrating sun?

Yup - you hit it.  Sort of like they keep hitting us in the face with it.  It also seemed - and maybe this was chapter pacing - that Daenerys is growing so much faster here, becoming more confident quicker.  That, and the scene between Joffrey and Cersei in last weeks episode, Cersei and Ned this week.  The scene with Robb and Tyrion - Robb came off much different in the books during that scene, more unsure of himself.

I just see them being much more direct.  While I know that sometimes you need to be in TV or film than in books, it's troubling.  The mystery, the suspense . . . it's still there, but its almost like they don't want it to be . . . .

And Melisandre did spring to my mind as well.
