Anyone else find the directing in the last two episodes to be lackluster? Many scenes that should have been home runs seem to have fallen a little flat in my opinion. Looks like they used the same director for both these episodes: Michelle MacLaren. It just seems she doesn't have the right skills for this series. Entirely my opinion though. In contrast, I think Alex Graves (Episode 4 & 5) and Alik Sakharov (Episode 6) did incredible jobs, and I'd like to see more of them.
Here's hoping David Nutter is more like them.
Personally, while I agree that episode 7 ws rather lacklust, I greatly enjoyed this one and think it's as closely perfect an adaptation as you could get with much of the dialogue being taken straight from the books while still adding the show's own flavor. For instance, Theon and Sansa's wedding managed to transmit just how incredibly awkward and cold everything was while still adding noteworthy scenes with the Tyrells. I had feared Daario wouldn't deliver the heads of his fellow captains and he did; I feared the show wouldn't make a distinction between a Wight and a Other; and have Sam kill a reanimated corpse rather than one of it's masters; and it did.
Speaking of which, I think they managed to have Sam's big GAR moment without downplaying the threat of the Others by making it obvious that the only reason our loveable brave coward managed to win was because he caught the creature completely unaware.
But, of course, for a week, Tyrion is my favorite character. He was brave, he was compassionate, he was funny; Oh God, was he funny.
And next episode, there will be another wedding. The One Wedding to Rule Them All.
