Jeez, people seriously didn't pick up on the fact that Renly and Loras were gay? Where is your reading comprehension people???

I did not pick up on it exactly. I was on the fence and thought it was possible, but that there was no conclusive proof of it one way or another. Of course I read through the series the first time several years ago. Back then my reading comprehension *was* worse. Reading through "Game of Thrones" again now, I am picking up on subtext I missed before. Some of it was forgotten, and some I never grasped to begin with.

Putting that aside, I was not bothered by Renly and Loras's scene. The kind of forum uproar you describe is exactly why I have never stepped foot in ASoIaF fan site or forum, check GRRM's blog, or follow any snippet of news. I have always followed the books in a vaccuum. That holds true for every hobby of mine with the exception of gaming, and only this site in particular. The drama of fanbases always crawls under my skin. Taking it from BioWare's forums is trial enough.

Ratings are out- good news- they continue to climb.  Ep 5 was a season high with 2.6 million viewers.  After this week's, I bet next week's will climb again even with the NBA playoffs in the US.  The commentary at the link says:

Intensely serialized shows like Thrones rarely climb like this, and when they do they tend to become major players.

Theon is definitely being brought center stage for his star turn.  Next week's episode is "A Golden Crown."  Methinks that Viserys is on deck for this one...  Image IPB

This is excellent news.  Thanks for keeping us updated on it, Addai.  Image IPB

And yes, can't wait to see the next episode and Viserys' . . . . errr, crowning glory.  Image IPB  Interested to see how they do that one.

Re: Renly & Loras - it was rather subtle in the books.  There were, however, enough hints to lead to that conclusion.  However, the show certainly took it over the top.  I'm not sure that was necessary, story-wise.  There was certainly no indication in the books that Loras was leading Renly around by the **** hand.  I'm assuming it was there for shock-factor and/or sex-it-up factor.  The foreshadowing of where that leading may end was not necessary, either, IMO.  In fact, that foreshadowing bothers me more than the blatant BJ, although I wasn't too fond of that, either.

I'll just come out and say that slurpee noises are never needed in TV or video games, be they Ros on Tyrion or Loras on Renly. That's one bit of realism I could do without. lol

I'd be interested to hear GRRM's comment on this episode. Maybe he really did envision Loras as instigator. I had always thought it was the Tyrells.

Yeah but the slurping adds a level of realism you need in a show like this. Also if there were no slurping, I might think he was just taking his shoes off or cleaning his shoes or something and not sucking dick like he was doing.

Slurp, slurp.

Speaking of sexual realism, when they had that quick shot of Theon's junk, I thought "You know, for someone who just finished having sex with a prostitute, his willy looks remarkably clean and dry...."

I don't know why my brain went there, but it did.

hehe, the nudity surprised me too, but what I thought was, he was pretty limp for a guy that just finished.

Oh, one more gross tidbit before the thread is cleansed by direwolves... I was relieved to read in an interview with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime) that that poor child actor playing Robyn Arryn was nursing a fake boob. I thought the poor kid might be scarred for life, but maybe he'll need less therapy after all.

Personally, what I kept thinking about during the "slurping" scene was: "Loras you forgot the other armpit!!"

The dungeons in the Eyrie must be a living hell if you're a sleepwalker.

Hahahahaha. This is what I was thinking too.

Also, I love how Sandor was like, "K. *drops to one knee." in the tourney.

well, despite being quite a convincing boobsickle, that was obvious to begin with - both for the child's/legal sake and because I doubt the actress conviniently had her boobs swelled by ways of being fulla milk.

In that case I doubt there'd be much living going on for much longer.

Ned Stark was in pretty good shape for a guy that probably hadn't seen any combat in the 17 years after the war. How much training did he even do in those years?

Jaime Lannister should've wiped the floor with him.

I would imagine these guys are constantly in training.  I mean, Ned and Jaime are about the same age, and while Jaime is Kingsguard, he hasn't seen any more or less combat than Ned in the interim.  The only difference being that Ned doesn't do tournaments, and he explained why.

Ah, I didn't realize they were supposed to be of the same age. Sean Bean's age got me fooled, then.

They were all of the same generation- young men during the rebellion against the Targaryens. Ned probably has a few years on Jaime, but since Jaime is nine years older than Tyrion it can't be by much.

I really didn’t understand why five minutes was wasted on this sequence between Renly and Loras. The first book doesn’t have their perspectives at all. Perhaps they feature in the second book and this is a head start on their character development? Or the show’s creators are hammering out an entirely new sub-plot even though they’ll be struggling to fit in the essentials as it is? Or it’s just a completely pointless one-off scene? No, that can’t be right.

The same could be said for that scene with Greyjoy and the prostitute. The less I see his ugly fish-face, the better.

My how interesting. I just watched Ep. 5 on my satellite (based in Bahrain). The Renly/Loras scene was there, slurpy noises included, but we didn't get to see Greyjoy's toys. The lower part of the scene was blacked out and we missed out on the male frontal nudity. I was actually surprised that they allowed the Renly/Loras scene to run.

And yes, the Eyrie scene was even creepier on a big screen.

It's not a waste.  Before the end of book one, Renly becomes a major player, so this is setup for events soon to come in season one.  Same for Theon Greyjoy.

Neither Renly or Loras are ever POV characters in the books, which I suppose is also why their relationship is only hinted at.  The only ones we might hear about it from are the POV characters and from their perspective, a nobleman would need to marry and produce heirs regardless, so it doesn't matter who he's fellating on the side.
