Hooray! The Onion Knight lived! Thanks Lord of Light!! (Just finished watching s. 3, only recently got fire & ice fever)

I have a few questions for the Westeros experts: (Please no book spoilers)

- Why does Yara want to (believe she can) save Theon?

- Why will Sansa not just fall on a knife?

- Who is Lord Bolton's true allegiance to? (It is clearly not Frey or Tywin)

- Why does Tywin not proclaim that Geoffrey is a product of incest and should be removed from the Iron throne? (He clearly knows, maybe he likes being the puppet master...?)

- How are certain groups who were loyal to Ned/Robb not fighting back?

- Where the hell is Blackfish!?

- Why is Arya not going DIRECTLY back the brotherhood headquarters?

- Why didn't at least a few of the Second Sons fight against Daario? Surely some would favor one general over the other two...

-Asha (Yara's name in the books, they thought it was too similar to Osha) wants to save Theon because she genuinely gives a damn about her brother. It's rather refreshing really.
-She's too dainty
-Lord Bolton's allegiance is to Lord Bolton, and only Lord Bolton.
-Cersei's children are the sole claim the Lannisters have to the Iron Throne. If he reveals Joffrey's origins, he opens the door for people to suspect the origins of his siblings and the whole thing falls apart.
-They have no leader to unite them, and divided they don't stand a chance.
-Barricaded in Riverrun if I recall the books right. The Lannisters have to besiege it.
-The Hound is deciding their destination at the moment, but Arya's not a big fan of the brotherhood after they handed over Gendry.
-Their sell swords, loyalty to a corpse isn't something their known for.

In terms of Roose Bolton's allegiance, it seems more to be to 'the winner' as opposed to any specific person. His ambition stretches over dominion of the North, his bubble of power, but not much beyond that, and he certainly has little interest in the Iron Throne, otherwise he'd be going about things in a very different manner. Had Stannis won the Battle of the Blackwater as opposed to the Lannisters/Tyrells, Bolton would likely have turned to him once he saw that Robb Stark's cause was lost and things probably would have played out similarly to an extent, although Stannis' war methodology is vastly different to that of Tywin's and so there probably would have been distinct differences.

As for the proclamation of Joffrey's incestuous parentage, Tywin for one had no interest in sitting upon the Iron Throne - he knew that ruling from behind the scenes as Hand would be far more beneficial to the longevity of his plan and his house - and so telling the public of Joffrey's parentage (and hence Tommen and Myrcella's too) would weaken the already fragile Lannister dominance of the Iron Throne, but would also strengthen the cause of their enemies. It would make both Stannis' and Robb's causes far more valid to support because of what Joffrey's parentage implies.

Tywin still would have been an excellent King if he had ever moved for the Throne; Admittedly he did what he did as Hand for his House and his dominion over that twit of a King was well established given he was about the only one who could control Joffery effectively in most instances. But given what happened to the Lannisters shortly there after following the Red Wedding, Battle of Blackwater and conclusion of the war of five kings.

They needed a strong actual king, not that idiot.

:/ A great man that didn't deserve the end that befell him.

As Pycelle says, "Lord Tywin wore no crown, yet he was all a king should be".

Ultimately, Tywin knew that he could rule the kingdom but to try and preserve what fragile balance was left between the Lannisters and Tyrells through the facade of Joffrey's 'lineage' to the throne (and hence the marriage to Margaery), he would have to rule through him. In his eyes, Joffrey, annoying he may be, was necessary.

Tywin is also a huge jerk, and just about everyone in Westeroes hates him and his family.  Competent though he may be, the moment he overtly takes takes the Iorn Throne is the moment the rest of the seven kingdoms stop fighting each other and start fighting him.

I usually don't agree with the Grand Maester but in this he was correct.

Tywin was probably the man most suited to being King yet never moved towards it.

But I don't think he would actually make the move to the Iron Throne and take it directly. It's true, everyone hates him and he knows that, which is why he would cement alliances or completely destroy the other great houses, as he began doing after he returned to King's Landing by marrying Joffrey and Margaery, sending Baelish to the Arryns, granting Doran Martell a place on the Small Council (even though he had ulterior motives concerning the Lannisters). Using the alliances, he would rule through a king, as opposed to being in direct control.

Yeah, Pycelle is generally a useless old windbag, but he served his purpose to the Lannisters and he gave that pretty great quote.

The problem is that for all is brilliant political maneuvering, he's ultimately undone by his failings as a father.  Like most characters in the series, he sows the seeds of his own destruction, and potentially, that of his whole house.

Failings? Raising a son you despise is a failing now? He could have and probably should have done away with that wretched little gnome but he didn't. he gave him a name, a family and a duty. He failed all three.

That pathetic Midget was a craven Murderer who committed that act out of ego and arrogance.

That is what makes the series, the characters, so good - the failures. No-one is perfect and that is really brought across in the characters, that no matter how good they are and no matter how high they reach, they are ultimately brought down by the weaknesses that they neglect. It's what makes the likes of Varys and Littlefinger so dangerous - they are very careful in what they do and how they do it, leaving nothing behind that can bring about their downfall or will break their plans. But eventually, everyone makes that slip, sooner or later, even those two.

He really should have stayed away from Court Politics.

Can't really say too much about the Spider because he's cryptic as heck, but Littlefinger does seem to have a bit of a weak spot when it comes to Sansa.
