Yep. Put it this way, imagine if someone was about to be put on Death Row for murdering an orphanage or something like that, and literally EVERYONE saw them do it. In Westeros, Gods are held in high regard by many, so the idea would be that the guilty party would call for a Trial by Combat, and if the Gods really wanted the person punished, they'd have them killed. If not, then the murderer goes free as its clearly not the Gods' will to have them punished for their crime.

So yes.

Wow, that's such a messed up system. Thank god we don't do things that way in the real world xD

We've had similar and worse, lol. Remember the witch trials and the methods of 'revealing' who was a witch within? Ended up with a lot of dead women and no witches!

People be crazy.

Almost everything you see in GoT has real world parallels.

Helmet?

Seriously, Oberyn wear a full head helmet. You'll thank me later.

It would have been quite ironic had the Mountain himself been wearing a helmet.

Back in the early to mid medieval period in Europe we did, works out great for the reigning warrior elite. Though alternatively Ordeals were employed (Which usually meant something like "Stick your hand in boiling water and we'll see if God favors you in a few days when we check and see if the burns have begun to heal or not", though evidence indicated they were threatened more often than they were used "We can settle this with a sum of gold or I'll call an ordeal. I'm willing, are you?")

Ironically, for most of the medieval period, nobody, not even priests, believed witches were real. In fact there's a handbook written by a bishop circa 1000AD that dismisses any woman claiming they could perform magic of any sort as nothing more than a superstitious fool. Witch trials were very much an early renaissance thing.

True. I forgot how messed up the middle-ages were.

Also, I'm pretty tired of Melissandre. It seems like she goes around looking for excuses to be naked.

What else I found jarring for a moment(apart from all the naked women, since I'm nearly used to it), was the Pirate joke told in the hot tub- the punch line of "brown pants". Always weird when there's a bunch of british people with an american production team behind them. I expect they'll start talking about cookies and candies next.

It's symbolic of how we are all stripped of our secrets and shames and sins under the visage of the Lord of Light.

Or ******, whatever.

It would have been quite ironic had the Mountain himself been wearing a helmet.

Well, he begins the fight with one.

That would be nice...Perhaps in an ideal universe where I only used it for entertainment purposes, but unfortunately this isn't the case.

Well, just finished watching the Mountain and the Viper.

Extremely brutal, but I gotta say, I think the books actually handled this scene (and the Oberyn character in general) much better. I feel like the show overemphasized the playful/sexual aspects of the character (which Oberyn has to some extent) over the deadly, methodical nature of the character.

But that could also be due to being able to get into the heads of the characters more in the books. Tyrion does give you  a play by play there of why Oberyn is considered such a deadly, dangerous individual.

That fight ending was straight outta a 90's OVA, so brutal and ultraviolet that I found myself horrifiedly cheering.

My mom and stepfather(who I watch the show with each week) were pissed, because now they're both in the mindset of, "Tyrion's dead".

It was great getting their reactions, my God.
