I tried to about 6 or 7 years ago, but couldn't really get into them.

Now though, I imagine that I could appreciate them much more.

I read the series the winter break after exams, I gobbled them up, the 12 hr car ride to NO also helped....

I'd definitely recommend a second crack at them

And since I'm a total newbie, I might as well list my favorite characters:

Arya
Jaime
Tyrion
Cersei
Tywin
Oberyn
Olena Tyrell
And there are probably more I'm forgetting, but my brain is still totally fried at the moment.

Not a big Dany fan though. Out of the "main" cast, she's the only one I'm not too big a fan of. Same with Sansa.

If I wasn't hip deep in school, I'd devour them. But I'll probably destroy one or two on Spring Break when I'm on the plane back to KY. I've been in dire need of a new series to read.

>no Stannis

Bend the knee to true king of Westeros, Stannis of the House Baratheon, first of his name, king of the Andals, the Rhoynar, the Wildlings and Giants, and the First Men, chosen of the Lord of Light R'hollr, wielder of Lightbringer, purger of heretics and abominations, and protector of the Realm

I really don't expect Stannis to get anywhere near the Iron Throne. It'll probably end up going to Jon Snow.

Jon Snow... seriously? Even if Snow is who people think he is he'll never get close to the throne.

Melisandre has predicted (in the books) that Stannis will sit on the throne, it may not be forever but the iron throne will have the pleasure of seating his royal buttcheeks at some point. My personal favorite to end up on the iron throne is Shireen or Tommen. Martin at some point in the past said that the person who ends up on the throne will be a surprise, so that counts out Dany and Jon Snaw.

Snow would be the "surprising" choice though, at least at one point in time. Random motherf*cker, completely detached from the politics of Westoros with no (apparent) claim to the Iron Throne? It might would be a surprise, but Martin isn't as good at surprises as he thinks.

Really? Have you got a link to a quote or something?

(sorry I've just seen a few people falsely "quote" Martin)

The Iron Throne is his by right. Let all true men declare their loyalty.

I doubt Tommen will keep the throne given Maggy the Frog's predictions. His destiny is to get knocked over like a bowling pin by either Stannis or Dany. Whoever sits the iron throne at the end will probably not be a fan favorite, though. I will be amazed if Dany or Jon end up there. What would not shock me is if Littlefinger finds a way to win the throne for two seconds before Sansa kills him. She is his only weakness, and he is the only character besides Varys who has been playing the long game from day one.

I think Jon Snow is going to be the final person in the series to end up on the Iron Throne.

Jon taking the throne doesn't really seem like it would be much of a 'surprise,' I mean maybe it could be because it would seem completely out of the blue, but from a narrative standpoint I mean - Jon Snow is pretty much the closest thing to a traditional 'hero' character the series has, him rising up above them all and sitting on the Iron Throne seems it would be a very typical way to end it.

Definitely not what I'd expect from GRRM. Though I guess it would be a surprise because of that.

Well, I think the problem is Snow WOULD have been a huge surprise when ASOIF was first released. But a decade and a half of Internet fandom dissection and digestion is going to unravel any mystery that is even remotely hinted at. I wouldn't be at all surprised if GRR has made significant changes to the plan just because of what fans have "figured out" over the years.

Personally, I think that such "mysteries" are good and engaging, but trying to make it so outside the realm of what fans have speculated (especially if it's JUST to be an answer that fans haven't speculated) runs serious risk of being dumb and untrue to the spirit of the rest of your series. Sometimes the reason fans haven't guessed your big "reveal" is because it just makes zero sense <cough ME3 cough>. In many cases, it is all about the EXECUTION of such reveals rather than it being something no one ever guessed.

Not advocating R+L=J or anything, just saying I dislike when stories change because fans figured out the mystery and the author(s) then try to narratively tap dance to "stay ahead."
