So...how does everyone feel about the fact that, after this season, the show is going to be a spoiler for the books now?

I'm skeptical about the show writers winging it from a likely vague outline of the next books GRRM gave them. Also feel George should have been the one to tell this story himself.

I feel like I'm probably going to have to stop backing House Lannister.

From what I've been hearing they will be taking the show in a different direction than the books.

Jaime Lannister going to Dorne in the place of Sir Aerys Oakheart is great example as it alters the story for not only his character but many others as well.

It's a good route to take IMO and keeps me excited for Winds of Winter where the real story will continue.

Half-half.

Half spoiler because they do consult with GRRM. Half their entirely own take, which may portray a whole different series of events.

Season 5-7 will be when Game of Thrones becomes, uniquely, 'Game of Thrones', and not 'Song of Ice and Fire Adaptation'.

More conversations will revolve around showverse and bookverse, instead of 'how well the show adapts the books'.

Every alter so far has somehow weakened the show in one way or another.

Proof that without the source material the show can't stand on its own.

But because nobody else gives af about it's not gonna effect its ratings as it plummets into total mediocrity.

Oh well.

I like dragons n sh*t so I'll still enjoy the stuff a lot.

Every alteration has made the show weaker? Does that mean that there somehow exists a person who dislikes the Arya-Sandor arc?

"Every alter so far has somehow weakened the show in one way or another."

False.  More changes have been positive not negative. :)

Book yahoos whine that Brienne and the Hound never fought in the book. That's too bad because that fight was AWESOME. That auto makes the show better. 8)

The only alteration in the show I have disliked is Irri dying and I believe that was done because of complications with the actress.

A shame as she was really cute. :(

I'll go ahead and say it, they should deviate as little as possible.

With a few exceptions, the material completely original to the show has been entirely garbage, "Asha's" rescue attempt, Locke, that weird Gendry/Edric mix, even smaller stuff like Robb's plan to attack Casterly Rock, the differences in Qarth, the Thenns being cannibals and so on...

They really need to stick closely to what they know is gonna happen and not deviate too terribly much.

The asha rescue thing made zero sense.

Eh

Been up 24+ hours.

Can't really care enough to detail.

But yes.

Not every alter is bad.

Twyin and Arya was a good thing and showed a better side to an otherwise horrible man whilst not keeping OOC.

Not only that, the dreadfort is supposed to be this mighty fortress that withstood Stark siege for years. Asha and a few of her clowns can get in just like that? Yeah ok.

Yeah thatw as dreadful. not because of any change, but the entire scenario was just plain poorly handled.

To be fair, sneaking into a fortress with a small group would be easier than storming the front gate with an army.

I will admit that the scene was poorly done though.

I liked some of the show's deviations. The character related ones anyway. I thought the Hound and Arya dynamic was quite a bit better in the show than they were in the book for one.

While I agree for the most part, the show did have a couple scenes that deviated from the books that were superior. The fight between Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark was better in the series. I also thought show Stannis was better at the Battle of the Blackwater.

Baratheon soldier: "The fire..their archers....Hundreds will die!"

Stannis: "Thousands."

Stannis: (shouting at the rest of his troops) "Come with me and take this city!"

Not saying the show is in every case worse than the books, and I'd point to character moments like Arya/Tywin or Robert/Cersei as good examples of switching things around, but they are exceptions it seems to me.

I liked the show's take on Catelyn Stark's relationship with Jon Snow more than the books too. This in particular was one of my favorite scenes imo that gave a lot more depth to their dynamic to me.

I was never entirely fond of Catelyn, but I always loved this scene. Michelle Fairley is a great actress.

Funny thing is Stannis is a much better human being when his shadow sorceress isn't around. Coincidence? I think not. :)

I didn't particularly care for that bit with Catelyn, nothing came of it beyond "oh well she's not as bad to Jon as we might have thought, oh wait, she never acted on it"

But the fact that she admits she's at fault made me find her character at least a little more sympathetic than she was before, tbh. I liked it.

She was still a bit of a b**** to him, but at least we know she wasn't entirely without remorse for it.
