What a terrible spoiler.Seagloom wrote...
My favorite part of Syrio's scene is his death was not shown on screen. When I first passed that part of the novel I started hoping beyond hope we will see Syrio again before story's end. Seeing GoT mimic that bit gave me a bit more.

My apologies if that was a spoiler. I figured everyone participating here saw episode eight by now.

Did anyone else think there was certain lack of brutality in Syrio's fight scene? Instead of bleeding eye sockets and broken throats we get this..this fatherly Disney-wacking.

The series is making me re-think certain things from the book, and this is one of them. I'm now convinced that Syrio lived and we'll see him again. It would just be awesome if he showed up saying "I told you Arya child, 'not today.'" Hopefully this is not wishful thinking!Seagloom wrote...
I probably should not have used the word death. Death is what can be inferred, but in truth we have no proof. We hear no screams or hear any words that suggest he actually died. That is why I hold out hope he might return in some capacity before the story concludes. I agree Syrio was a great character, and in my opinion the most skilled swordsman shown in GRRM's world to date.

Speaking of " Not Today"
Did the book version have the phrase escape from lips of Syrio and Varys both? At least I have completely missed this on both read throughs. Wonder what the implications are:O If any. Maybe it's just them both worshipping God of death.
Haha, surprisingly enough I'm all exited about what will happen in last two episodes. I keep wondering if they remain more or less 1:1 loyal to books or end up changing something major. It's not entirely unconceivable to think production team would want to go in some..entirely different direction with Dany and Drogo. Guess we haven't seen anything yet that would suggest any drastic changes a-comin but hay.

Yeah, having read A Clash of Kings not too long ago, there is the one theory out there that ...
Clash of Kings SPOILER
Jaqen H'ghar = Syrio
I'm about half way through A Storm of Swords now so I don't know if that gets any further evidence, but I was thinking Jaqen had some similarities to Syrio in terms of how he talks and so forth.

That was what a friend told me. In his opinion it made Syrio seem less capable than in the novel. Especially since his sword was smashed by the Kingsguard before he got a neck stab in. Instead of expert lethal stabbing, we got him bowling them over. I thought it worked to show how his nimble swordplay was so badass, but I can see how it also hurts it.

A question about the books, are they loaded with spelling mistakes and strange errors? I have the Kindle editions of the first two books and they are packed with them. Every few pages there seems to be strange errors like letters being replaced by letters that look similar, Miri Maz Dur switched between Miri and Mini a few times leaving me somewhat confused. Often rr will be replaced by m. It gets a bit confusing at times. Just wondering if its a Kindle thing or is it carried over from the books?

What I find odd is that they are very forward in some of the scenes like the sexposition, but the scene where the Dorthraki are raiding was much tamer than how I pictured it in the book. Not that I'm complaining they should be more brutal, it just seems weird to me.

Watched it tonight on my satellite service and, once again, Orbit blocked out the male nudity. It looked really funny with the scene zoomed in so that Hodor's dangly bits didn't show. You couldn't tell what Osha was really looking at. They do allow the female nudity, though. Double standard!
That's because men's things are precious.

Srlsy, don't read it if you're not done with teh books.
Jaqen is a member of the Faceless Men assassin guild which means he can change his appearance at any time. Wouldn't surprise me if Syrio was one of his older alter-ego=]

I read all the previous books on Kindle for iPhone, but I think I want to buy the hardcopy of this one.

I did pre-order ADWD, though I set it to use amazon.com's free shipping which takes longer to ship, and I might have to change that. I'm not going to be able to wait!

Brock - I have the same thought as you, and have for a while . . . .I found the sudden connection a bit . . .convenient?
As to ADWD - I love this series, I really do. I haven't pre-ordered the book, though. And I won't. I also won't purchase it until it's available in MMP. Yes, it's biting my own nose off to spite my face, but it's my little protest against GRRM glacial writing pace, and his lack of concern about it.

I never considered a connection between Syrio and Jaqen. Interesting. I think I would prefer that were not the case; but if it was I could accept it. I wondered about where Ned found Syrio too. It did seem weird a former First Sword of Braavos was just hanging about King's Landing and willing to take on a student. I always figured GRRM would explain it later. He never did.

I have seen episode 8, but I have not read the books. Maybe I misinterpretted what you wrote. I thought you were saying that he died (through knowledge from having read the book). But it sounds like the book never touches on him again in what's currently published, not that it actually outlined his death. So I can still hope he'll be alive!Seagloom wrote...

As much as I loved Syrio's character bringing him back 4 books later would just feel like bad fan-fiction.
What I love about ASoIaF is how cynical the setting is and how any character can get killed off at any time.
Having too many characters 'return from the dead' would just cheapen the setting for me.
EDIT: Oh and the Syrio = Jaqen theory was put to rest in A Feast for Crows as it confirmed Jaqen was already in the black cells before Syrio’s confrontation with Meryn Trant.
