I'll just say to the comment above, I don't mind if they don't do sweeping epic. These books are about characters, and what matters is that they get the close-ups of them right. Godohgod they sure did this week.
I have to go sob some more.

Can't wait to see it! Ahh who am I kidding, I came here to whine;
Spoilers! Look out!
It's about time HBO reminds us they know how to make a scene look BIG. Their tourneys, weddings and Dothraki raids have all been rather bland and of small scale and low budget. I don't expect or want CAPSLOCKED HOLLYWOOD EPICNESS of Jackson's LOTR or some such but..come on:l Single smirk of Sean Bean costs them more than hauling few bussloads of suitable extras on location and dressing em up. When it comes to scenes that (should) involve actual crowds, HBO has left far too much room for geeky whining. I want to see big fights goddamn it! :l If we have some miniature version of Whispering woods with Jaime vs 3 guys or some horrid " btw, there was a big fight, lot of people died. was awesome. sorry you missed it:)" - exploitation dialogue by Catelyn I unleash my nerd rage:l
Humm actualy, Whispering woods propably isn't in today's episide right? Well same applies to Tyvin's Host vs the diversion just as well.
Be prepared to unleash your nerd rage.

It was disappointing that we saw *nothing* of the major battles. I expected we might at least see highlights or something, but there was nothing. Wow. It makes me wonder how the heck they plan to do "A Clash of Kings". I had a sliver of hope before. Now that hope has been chewed up and spat into a pile of gutter trash.
This one time I got more out of Dany's segments than Seven Kingdoms events. There was more of a sense of scale there, and I liked Ser Jorah's duel well enough. I also liked the scenes with Jon up at the Wall. Tyrion, Bronn, and Shae's scene truth or dare wannabe scene was also great. Hearing part of Tyrion's story was great... and sad. Good job by the actors and actress all around there.
Of course the show stealer was Eddard's death. That also had a decent sense of scale with the crowd. It was heart wrenching seeing him give up his honor and while knowing what Joffrey was going to do.
I have to hand it to the musicians this episode too. Hearing a variation of the title theme in that final scene with Robb and his army was neat. As well, the somber tune playing during the credits was a perfect capstone after Eddard's execution. It hit home the sadness of that whole event. Gah... painful.

Overall, a very good episode. I'm also a little disappointed that the two major battles were so . . .well, minor. However, Jon's scene with Aemon - something I was looking forward to - along with Ned's beheading more than make up for it. I'll also add that Arya's scene with Yoren was also well done, although slightly different and shortened, but very well done.
The Dothraki portions were also well done, although again, shorterned - not as much, though. I did expect a little more fighting than just Qohollo and Jorah, but so be it.
I have no complaints.
@ Seagloom - the only major battle they really need to do from Clash is . . . well, that would be a spoiler. Let's say . . . a river and 3 ****s.
And yes - the somber ending was so very appropriate.

There's Twitter chatter that a lot of new fans are raging and saying they won't watch it any more. I figured the producers were worried about that because almost before the episode was over they were tweeting "explanations for tonight's shocker" type things.
Other than the wrenching final, I also thought the bits with Shae, Tyrion and Bronn and hearing the story of Tysha was superb. Shae is not how I pictured her but that's okay. Bronn is turning out to be my favorite minor character with Viserys gone. Also... BOOK FOUR SPOILER AHEAD...
Hurrah for foreshadowing!!! (Bronn's comment about Tysha)

Overall the series has probably been the best adaptation I have ever seen, and more so than just faithfulness to the source material. The tone of the novels has been captured damn near perfectly in the show's settings, in my opinion. I'm reading the books again while watching it, and I'm picturing the characters and the locations as they are in the show, not as I had pictured them before. That's some pretty powerful stuff.

I can understand being upset about Tyrion's cut battle scene, but Jamie was captured off-scene in the books, so I don't see why that would be portrayed in scene in the show.

True, the capture happened off-screen, but we did hear a lot of the battle through Cat's ears. I expected something similar, simply because they wouldn't have had to show it on screen. Also, they altered the part they did show, likely because of the lack of Northern bannermen they'd shown us. Makes me wonder how later situations with Arya will be played out, along with future events in the North.

The girl who plays Arya, Maisie Williams is doing absolutely fantastic. To think, this is her first acting job ever. Considering in the future she becomes as much of a main character as Dany and Jon, I have full confidence that she will hold the fort and shine.

So many performances and moments in this episode, it's hard to talk about them all. Tyrion's "look how much fun we're having" and Bronn telling him to stay low... omg...

Yep.. They tend to be more potent, but less frequent
And yeah, I really was impressed. I like what they are doing with Shae from a TV standpoint considering she is going to be in the series for a couple more seasons. However, something just felt.. off about her as a book enthusiast.

Yeah, just finished watching that. Poor guy, but then again, all us book readers were right there with him when we first read it too. God knows I chucked my book across the room at that part. He seriously isn't going to like what happens to Drogo and Rhaego next week.
