He made one retarded decision after another to end up there. I don't know how he was in the books but he's never been a star character in the series. Of course they never actually showed his death which is cheesy. Just like they cut away before Theon and Sansa fell 100 feet into the snow. No way they would survive that.

When she spots the Dothraki approaching, Dany removes one of her rings and drops it on the ground. In the episode itself, it's unclear as to why. In the Inside the Episode video, Benioff claims it is the first in a Trail of Bread Crumbs, calling Dany very smart for thinking of this. Which she would be, if it weren't for the fact that it's a tiny ring in the middle of a huge field that's about to be trampled over by a Dothraki khallasar, hundreds of miles from any rescue party. Dany has no idea where Drogon has taken her, no idea how far away she is from Meereen, and given that she left her council surrounded by the Sons of the Harpy, no real reason to believe any of her friends are alive to come find her. So the idea anyone finding this ring is ridiculous, the fact that Jorah and Daario almost certainly will find it becomes painful, and the idea that Benioff considers this whole mess to be clever really lends credence to the idea that Dany is a creator's pet.

There were a lot of cliffhangers in this episode.

 

In some ways, think about it for Brienne:

 

Is Brienne a true savior? Or a selfish, revenge-obsessed brute, who abandoned her duty to Sansa for her petty grudge against Stannis? Stannis' "Go, do your duty" gains a lot of irony in that light. Who did act justly when he killed Renly.

In the books he has hill tribes and lots of northerners joining his cause. And he gives back areas and castles the Boltons have stolen from the Stark supporters etc. He also sends Davos to search for Rickon to put him in Winterfell. He never sacrificed his daughter, and at this point he is nowhere near his daughter either. The whole thing on the show is fanfiction for shock value and nothing else.

I was kind of frustrated with both Ned and Robb because they were both foolish, though Robb more so, though at least in Ned's case, he took a calculated risk that could have gone either way in either his or Cercei's favor.

Aside from the shock value tacked on, what they did also allows them to quickly and cheaply shove this storyline into a few episodes. The whole thing about him getting hill tribes and lots of northerners and giving back lands taken by the Boltons would have to be something the writers accounted for much earlier. They just rushed this thing out to get it over with.

All in all, I think the consensus over the internet is that this episode proved that the books really are better than the show. This was just a bad season.
