THIS IS A VERY SPOILERY DISCUSSION. Fair warning.Hehe. And us R+L shippers think they'll be reviving that old sibling incest thing, too!! Though for them, I might actually find it non-creepily romantic.TJPags wrote...
I'm not so sure it matters, I think the major conflict is Others v Men.
However, I'm personally betting on Dany . . .with Jon.
Indeed. I am one of them as well.
Question, for you and anyone else who has read the books (regardless of your view on this issue, if you have one): Is there anyone alive now who knows the truth of the R+L=J question? I seem to think Howland Reed may know . . . but I'm not sure . . . .
I seem to remember reading that Howland Reed is the only one who knows, or was it that he knew what Lyanna made Ned promise? I really need to read through them again.
But yeah, pretty sure that Reed is the only one who knows about Jon that is left alive at the moment.

So who do you guys think will end up with the iron throne at the end of it? Daenerys? Stannis?... Tyrion? =P
Dany is a strong possibility. I hope she is *not* the one to rule at the end, though. Dany ending up on the throne is about the most pat outcome possible. Stannis is probably never getting the throne. I prefer Jon being his own man away from the royalty mess. I like that he stuck with the Night's Watch. With GRRM though, who knows.
Ultimately I would prefer an outcome we cannot see coming. Maybe a fracturing of the Seven Kingdoms back to their pre-Targaryen status as city states with surrounding land. I doubt that will happen, though.

Some kind of strange spoilers I guess, if you havent read the books! So who do you guys think will end up with the iron throne at the end of it? Daenerys? Stannis?... Tyrion?
Wildlings and Night's Watch get eniterly wiped out by The Others. Dany and Jon meet and immediately fall in love, have big magic wedding and burn half of the Westeros including the Others and rule what is left together. Some kind wizard conjures Dany a new womb so she and Jon get to make brand new wincestious Targaryen babies.
Bran gets to fly around with a remote controlled dragon of his own and is all "I learned to fly now, crow! /sageface"
Arya becomes a stone cold trained assassin and faceless men send her to kill Jon and Dany! Upon seeing Jon she remembers she isn't an evil killer but Arya Stark.Grouphug ensues.
Closing words of the last book are either "....his glistening manhood. The end. " or " Forsooth, that is the Song of ice and fire."
Tyrion's will be the only big " Oh no!:(" type of a death we have yet to face. He dies in the 7th book, towards the end of page 233:(
...Seriously tho, with GRRM being GRRM, I'm wagering it will be something entirely unpredictable. Bran getting some juicy 3rd eye action by flying (as) a dragon all over the place and Tyrion getting all

I would even be happy if Sansa and a certain halfman could find themselves friends and take the throne. I don't think it will happen, but man, that was such a heartbreaking thing.

These discussions always remind me of Alistair-Fiona discussions.
And, the whole thing makes me verklemmt. I like the Targaryens. I'm re-watching "Baelor" now and got misty when Maester Aemon was telling his story. I also really liked Daenerys' line "I was never nothing." You can tell she's still trying to convince herself. I hate it when people say Dany is a Mary Sue. She's so not.
That scene didn't get as much as it did written, to be honest. Written, it was just so incredibly powerful.
As to Jon - I did go back and find a passage where the Reed twins were telling Bran the story of the mystery knight - that's the part that makes me think Howland Reed knows - the way they end that, Bran asking whether the Dragon Knight ever found happiness with the lady of beauty = that's a different story. They had to have heard that from their father.

Check out some of the art by John Picacio for the 2012 ASoIaF calendar. It is awesome.
This is his Arya.

Too beautiful. Arya should have been uglier.
She isn't described as that beautiful and even the guards tease her on her looks. Picario(sp?) made her too lady-like. She looks like Sansa with a sword(edit: I assume she's carrying a sword because of the way she's positioning her right arm).

I was watching that guy's other reviews last night. His enthusiasm is entertaining. I could not disagree with him more about some of the characters, though. Hating on Tyrion just because he is a Lannister? What the hell man, are you heartless? I also disagree with his Team Dothraki bit. Yes, Westeros is a cesspool, but somehow I think mass murderer and rape would be worse. Go figure.
Speaking of Dothraki, I cannot wait to his reaction to Drogo's fate. XD
To be fair, Tyrion has killed children and people who didn't deserve death.

What guards? The ones at Winterfell? They called her Arya Underfoot. The ones at King's Landing, when she tried to get back in after travelling through the Dragon's Skull rooms? She was wearing rags, and was filthy.
While she's not described as beautiful, she's not described as ugly, either. She's compared to Lyanna, and is said to resemble Jon strongly, not taking after Cat at all.
She may have been made too good looking, I won't necessarily dispute that, although I think it's more that she looks older than she is. But other than the Sansa jibes about her, there's no description of her as ugly that I recall.

I think I said upthread somewhere that I also didn't like Tyrion at first while reading the books, and it was probably because I was thinking all Lannisters are bad. Until you realize how GRRM rolls, you can come into the story with more of a good guys vs. bad guys mentality.Seagloom wrote...

Re Arya- anyone who's said to look like Lyanna is not ugly. Lyanna is the Helen of Troy of the series. While that might be because of her sparkling personality, I'm guessing she was decent to look at.

Honestly that would completly ruin the series for me.
Personally I'm hoping for an ending where the others are repelled but all of the characters ultimately fail showing that in the larger scheme of things everything they were fighting each other for was for nothing.
I'm nihilistic like that though.

It seems completely inevitable in a world where you pretend SoIaF is run-of- the mill shovelware fantasy by average author. Mysterious orphan bastard hero faces series o ventures and hardships, eventually gets the hot girl and becomes a king. I'd hate it as well:p

Did David Eddings ever write anything that wouldn't end in such way?

Neither did I. I wrote as much many pages ago when mentioning how much more likable Tyrion is in the HBO series compared to his AGoT novel counterpart. Still, I did not peg him as a villain right away. I thought Cersei, Jaime, and Viserys were bad news early on, and had a wary eye cast on Littlefinger and Varys, but that was about it.

I'd be disappointed if it was just Dany swooping in on her dragons to save the day from the Others to have her and Jon go all kissy face and rule happily ever after. I doubt that will happen...but I'm more curious as to where Stannis and Melisandre fit into all this since Stannis is the only one that seems to give a damn about the stuff beyond the Wall. And who the hell knows what Melisandre is actually up to.

Uh, I think that's a little harsh. Is the misery just supposed to go on and on? Someone is going to rule, and forgive us simpletons who prefer an ending that's not completely black and dismal but is still ****ed up and bittersweet with promises of it all going wrong again someday.LTD wrote...
