I certainly will at least dig nto Thrones, but from everything I've heard from everyone, the books are extremely long-winded, and I've read enough long-winded fantasy books. I could hardly get through The Great Hunt.

Who is spreading such damnable heresies?  I inhaled the books.  There may have been a few places where I got feeling impatient and wanted to get on to other POV characters, but they are very, very readable.

Well, until you get to A Feast of Crows, of course.

Tyrion: Let's play a new game.
Bronn: There's a ... knife game I can teach ya.
Tyrion: Does it involve the potential loss of fingers?
Bronn: Not if you win.
Tyrion: No. No fire games, no knife games. Let's do something I'm good at.
Shae: What are you good at?
Tyrion: I happen to be a great judge of character.
Bronn: This sounds like a boring game.

-I don't like Shae. I didn't care too much for her in the book either, but in the show it seems they're trying to make her more than she was in the book. Meh.

-Pycelle's scene and the Littlefinger/Varys scene. The stuff not from the book just seems to be a little lacking. Just

Other then the whopping four minutes of redundant lesposition I liked almost every non-book scene and especially the Petyr/Varys ones are a joy to watch. And Pycelle's serves to show what a dirty weasel he really is (and the stretching was a nice comedic moment IMHO) - I like it.

I'm torn about Shae.  On one hand, I like how they seem to be making her a little deeper, but on the other hand, it doesn't jive well with later events. {MINOR SPOILER AHEAD, NON-BOOK READERS LOOK AWAY} It seems to me that, when HBO Shae is told by Tyrion that it's too dangerous for her to remain in King's Landing, she'd listen and leave.

Regarding Pycelle's scene and the "lesposition" (btw -) -- I believe this is why they created the character of Roz.  Through her scenes with key characters, the viewer is being given a look at their inner monologues that they would not have gotten otherwise.  They talk to her almost as if she's not there, and say things they wouldn't say to anyone else because, after all, who's she going to tell -- and if she did, who'd believe her?

Ratings are out- the finale hit a season high in the US with 3 million on its first evening airing.  Posted Image

It was the 2nd highest viewership in the UK, after the premiere.

Thats good news!

I just hope the show can last through A Storm of Swords...so much awesome happens in that book that I'd love to see on the show.

Yes I know- I'm dying to see Granny Tyrell on screen. Some grumpy old British dame going head to head with Joffrey and Cersei, eeee!

I was reading on another forum someone had quit reading aGoT after Ned's death because they didn't see the point of reading the series after the main character was killed. I facepalmed.

I understand that. No matter how good a story is, that will happen if it only contains characters you don't care about.

I agree with you, except that wasn't why the guy quit reading. He quit reading because he believed Ned Stark was the central and main character of the series and all other characters liked or disliked were secondary. Really if you're reading the books only liking Ned, I can understand quiting. On the other hand, if someone quits because they believe that a book which clearly marks each chapter as the POV of a different character is only about one character then they have made a serious mistake of comprehension IMO.

Ah, I love game of thrones! It annoys me though, that in the UK they keep airing the tv series at ludicrous hours and at seemingly random days. What's up with that? I don't like it one bit, I don't.

I bought a Nook today so that I can get A Dance With Dragons as soon as it hits... well, Nook.  I'm such an abject fangirl.

We should probably start a separate thread for ADWD, if others also will be reading and are interested.

I'd be fine with a book discussion thread. I'm currently contemplating purchasing a Kindle or a Nook myself. Unless that happens, though, I won't be getting aDwD until it comes out in paperback. I refuse to purchase his hardcovers anymore. as a protest against his glacial writing pace. Nook/Kindle pices are cheaper, though, so I'd likely get it immediately on those.

@Addai - can I ask why you chose the Nook over the Kindle, if there was a reason?

It's a bit sleeker (I don't like the mini keyboard on the Kindle) but the main reason is that Nook supports ePub which is what a lot of libraries use for e-book loans.  Kindle doesn't, which is a major WTF.

I use a Sony PRS 350. It also supports epub and allows me to buy books from Kobo.com using local gift cards in Canada. I'll be grabbing A Dance with Dragons as soon as it is available to download.

Yeah...I've got one copy of Game of Thrones in the larger paperback version and then the boxed set of all 4 books in the mass market paperback. So what the hell, I'll get the hardcover of aDwD.

There is just something nice about having a physical book in your hands.^_^

I have to scrape together cash to buy ADwD. I may not get it right away since I recently bought four books to read through. When I do it will be in hardcover. I own the whole series in hardcover. A story this good not only deserves hardcover, it *demands* it.

I agree about having a book in your hands.  I generally pefer paperbacks, as they are lighter and fit in briefcase easier, but I have no problem buying hardcovers or trade paperbacks of new books.  However, the last 2 books I've tried to purchase - Ericson's The Cripped God and, currently, Michelle West's House Name - seem impossible to actually find in bookstores.  That's incredibly frustrating to me, since I have a Barnes and Noble and a Borders on my way home from work, only to find neither of them have the book I want.  So I waste time there, and come home and order them from Amazon.

I figure an ereader, I can just up and download the thing, plus they're extremely portable.

There is just something nice about having every single book in your collection in the palm of your hand. ^_^

I do like paper books, but besides getting ADWD faster, we're always fighting for shelf space for new books so I figure this will cut down a little.

I'm already on pre-emptive GoT withdrawal.  :crying:

I'm a sad panda right now. It sucks living half a world from America at this moment. I asked the local store when we'd be getting ADwD, and they were unsure, but they were sure we won't be getting it at the same time it's released in America. ;____;

Anyway, HBO confirms Butler is not joining the 2nd season. (And the article says something about s2's budget being increased.)

Would ADwD come out  at the same time (as in US release date) electronically over there if you had a Kindle or Nook?

And yeah, I kind of figured the Gerard Butler thing wasn't right. I think Mark Strong would make a good Stannis- he certainly has the look- but I think he's already filming a movie or something this summer.

Could probably buy it online, Brock. But then I don't have a Kindle or Nook, and I prefer to have the real thing in my hands. (There's something about reading it from paper and holding the book that I love. Haha.) Oh well. I'll just have to be really patient.

Then my next in line is Richard Armitage.

I don't even know why I think I need to fangirl over Stannis, but... it can't hurt.

LOL You take what you can get, dude! Seven hells, I'm drooling over Tywin Lannister just because Charles Dance is so awesome.

I'll fangirl over Davos if they get someone good for him. *oh make it so*
