Martin has such a magic with words. Read the end of aGoT again and I'll be damned if I don't get shivers running down my spine. Brilliant.

'As Daenerys Targaryen rose to her feet, her blackhissed , pale smoke venting from its mouth and nostrils. The other two pulled away from her breasts and added their voices to the call, translucent wings unfolding and stirring the air, and for the first time in hundreds of years, the night came alive with the music of dragons.'
<3

And the show managed to adapt it rather well. The whole 'next day' thing is a bit iffy (like, no one noticed? lol) but it was such a breathtaking moment.

No Gerard? Ah well. I don't expect any swooning from my end if they cast Stannis appropriately. Gerard Butler did seem wrong for the role. Unless he has impressive range, it probably wouldn't have worked out. Swooning wise I'm most curious about Melisandre. I like the character, but that isn't why. I figure any woman described as Melisandre is has to be stunning. She has to look at least as good, if not better than Dany's actress or I will be disappoint. :P

Conversely, Brienne should not look too fetching. I don't expect her to look quite the same since they prettied up Sandor, but still...

Thinking of season two with an increased budget I wonder if we'll get to see things at the scale of the books or not. I was slightly disappointed by the size of Robert's retinue on the ride back from Winterfell, it seemed so much larger in the book. Now thinking of Renly's massive army in aCoK I wonder if they'll be able to do such things justice.

Then again maybe things like that will be cut down so they can spare the budget to really make the Blackwater something to behold.

So long to wait, at least I'll have aDwD when it's released, 12th July in the UK.

I finally got to see the last episode last night. I have to say its one of the better series I've seen on TV. I was disapointed by the lack of dire wolves but overall it was excellent. I think they set a new standard for TV and now every exposition scene in every show should feature a naked Roz. I had to rewatch that scene four times to figure out what Pycelle was saying, something kept distracting me...

I hope HBO releases Game of Thrones on Blu-ray this year (packed with extras and extended cut episodes naturally).

And commentary from George R.R. Martin! That would be sublime!

The directors have promised more direwolves, bigger battle scenes and more dragons in the 2nd season, since they have an increased production budget. We can thank the good ratings for that, I think.

They are going to release it on BluRay- it's already available for pre-order on amazon.com but no release date yet.

Oh, one little note from this last episode- we got a glimpse of Maege Mormont.  She didn't look too impressive, just cackling, but hopefully we'll get to see more of her.

Wic-net does a little tweet roundup that's always pretty funny.  They reprint things people tweet during the episodes.
I like this one:

This fate COULD have been avoided if Daenerys had a sassy gay friend…

The Night’s Watch is seriously the most epic bromance ever.

THOSE WHO WOULD HARM YOU WILL DIE SCREAMING Dany for President 2012

This is Wic-net's own commentary, on Rickon:

Rickon is not a figment of our imagination. He talks too. So perfectly emo! His signature killing move is the “say something completely depressing and then turn and walk away” TOTAL PWN.

I do wonder where this scene came from- you could see it in some of the pre-release trailers:

For a while I thought that was Ned being betrayed, but looking back at the throne it would seem like a Targaryen there with the white hair. Maybe its a deleted flashback scene to Brandon and Rickard getting killed by Aerys?

And commentary by GRRM on his episode would be pretty cool.

And in rewatching the last episode, was the bard that had his tongue yanked out Marillion? I recall GRMM saying one male character in the first season had a different fate than in the books, so this would seem to be it. Not a huge thing, but makes me wonder how they'll do things should the show get to A Storm of Swords & Feast for Crows. Just seems kind of pointless.

So spring. Hmm one thing I find funny is overall I like the books much more, but some of the 1 on 1 fights are better on film. But one worry I had from some news I was reading today is alot of fans are moaning over Neds Death, half of which I'll wager haven't picked up a book, nevermind those books. And there is talk he might come back as "All sorts of crazy stuff happens or can so why not." Now if they do, thats one hell of a departure from the books for the sake of fan service. And if they do, well then what else can they change? Or rather not change. Most of the changes so far have been small or time/budget related. But bringing back a guy thats dead even three books later is going a bit far.

Like the above makes me wonder, maybe they won't do a show for the other books and leave game of thrones as a standalone that differs way the hell from the books. In which case I'm not sure I'ld still want to watch it.

Oh no. If Ned comes back in this series, I may give up on it.

Ned was a great character, don't get me wrong - I really thought, as many did, he was the main character when I started reading GoT. But the story is about so much more than him. To make that big of a change would, IMO, destroy the integrity of the series. I would no longer be a series made from the books - it would be a series based loosely on the books.

Sorry, Ned lovers - he's one guy that stays dead.

I'm not watching the show if they do that. It would cheapen his death and throw a wrench the size of a small moon into the plot's gears. The only interesting bit would be seeing how Ned they justify Ned returning with his head sitting on a pike. Maybe his spirit will possess Grey Wind or something equally lame. It makes my stomach churn just thinking about it.

GRRM is an executive producer on the show no? I think that's what I saw in the credits. I doubt you'll see any ridiculous stuff that's crazily unfaithful to the books.

I liked Ned myself, but the saga isn't about him or any one person well minus one maybe.. I just like to keep **** in line, and was saying only what was on that report. Hope your right Fayth. Besides Sean has other things to do now, so won't be soon if they pull some bull like that. Though funny enough if it stays true we are assured of at least one zombie.

That's crazy talk. People just need to accept it and deal. That's the story, and if Ned didn't die then the **** wouldn't have hit the fan and there'd be no story.

Yeah, Ned's death is really what sets everything to follow in motion. I only want to see Ned if they have a flashback or something, but it doesn't seem like the show does much in the way of flashbacks.

Although, it would be ever so awesome to see a flashback of Robert and Rhaegar on the Trident.

I found something interesting on that scene, it seems that it was a nightmare Ned was having of the day his brother, and father died. Link

Yes, everyone was aged up because the material was too dark to work with young children.

re casting news:  Nothing yet, but there's a whole blog dedicated to speculation on the Blackfish.  The one I like best of their suggestions, for his look alone, is Dutchman Victor Reinier.

(EW.com) -- Warning: The following story discusses a major plot point from tonight's "Game of Thrones."

It's a big deal. If you haven't watched the episode yet, you should do that and come back. This story will still be here, I promise. Sure, the spoiler was in the novel and has been on the Internet forever, but if you're only watching the TV show, you probably won't see this coming, and we don't want to ruin it for you.

"Game of Thrones": Get the latest news, photos, and more

It might be unprecedented in the history of television: Killing off the main character in TV series during the show's first season as part of a creative master plan. Has there ever been a more shocking twist, a more risky play, than in this week's "Game of Thrones"?

Eddard Stark met his demise in Episode 9 on Sunday. Sean Bean's character is not only the closest thing to a central figure and traditional hero in the show's sprawling cast, he's also the man on the show's posters and billboards, the best-known actor in the series and probably one of the biggest reasons newcomers to the "Thrones" tale first checked out the show.

Yet from the very start, HBO, producers and cast knew they were launching a big budget fantasy epic that loses its hero. The idea of pulling a "Psycho" has been kicked around before -- the producers of "Lost" wanted to kill off Jack Shephard at the end of their pilot, but ABC convinced them to keep him around. And sure, shows have shaken up their casts during the first season before, notes TV historian Tim Brooks, but it's because there was an unexpected problem.

Based on the George R.R. Martin's series of books that delights in overturning fantasy cliches, noble Ned was doomed from the outset. Below, producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss talk about the move, their reactions to the twist and why it was necessary to the story. Later, we'll post a recap with our take (I'm writing it as fast as I can!) and an interview with Sean Bean:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When reading Game of Thrones, what was your reaction to George killing off Ned?

DAVID BENIOFF: I was in shock. From your training in seeing so many movies and reading books, you know your hero is going to be saved. Is Arya going to pull this off? Does the queen have some trick up her sleeve? Someone has something planned, because they're not really going to chop off his head -- right up until the moment when they chopped off his head. I was shocked, and then admiring of George's ruthlessness.

It's a tough thing to build up a character and make somebody as memorable and impressive as Ned and then get rid of him. But at the same time it leads to a story that is so much more suspenseful because you truly have no idea what is going to happen and who is going to survive. In stories, you usually have an idea who's going to make it out. Watching "The Town," which was a really excellent movie from last year, you knew who was going to survive and who will die within the first 10 minutes. This was something completely different. And I said, "Wow George, there's a reason you have such devoted followers because it makes such great reading and panicked reading because you turn the page not knowing who's going to get what next."

When pitching the project, what was HBO's reaction when you told them the main character dies?

D.B. WEISS: It was a selling point for them. They've [killed off characters] in some of their most successful series. In "The Sopranos," even Tony I wasn't completely sure was safe, it wasn't completely outside the realm of possibility [he would be killed off]. It completely ups the ante for any moment when a character is in a dire situation if you know another character didn't make survive a similar situation.

The scenes with Ned and Arya have been great, and with all that Maisie Williams is bringing to that part, I have a feeling this scene is going to upset viewers far more than it did readers of the book, in which the chapter was surprisingly casual and underwritten.

DAVID BENIOFF: It was a good choice by George to kind of underwrite it. Not to throw too many pretentious references around, but there's a short story by Anton Chekhov where the lead character dies in the middle of a sentence -- he didn't even get his own sentence. That always left a real impression on me because it was so offhand that it made you think that this is a brutal life for these Russian sailors on these ships in the 19th century.

It was very effective. Here you're kind of watching from afar and the bluntness of George's prose made it even more brutal, there was nothing sentimental and saccharin about it. It was just, there he is up there, and [the sword] Ice is coming down on his neck and that's it. It's faithful in the way it's translated to the screen, but it's still a very different thing because you have real live actors and little Maisie Williams watching and Ramin Djawadi's beautiful score. There were lots of things that made us nervous this season, but we knew with episodes nine and ten we were ending on a strong note.

Since he is the best-known actor and such a central figure, does losing Sean bring about any concern whether viewers will stick around for season two?

D.B. WEISS: In addition to his character, you're setting up other characters that goes forward. The idea is this show gets its hooks into people enough so you're going to want to know what happens to Tyrion and Arya. So even though we lose key characters, we're still invested in a lot of characters so you'll want to know what happens next.

Does Sean leaving the show open up the possibility of hiring another star for characters who are introduced in season two?

DAVID BENIOFF: There are a bunch of names up for discussion, so it's quite possible. Certainly there hasn't been any kind of mandate that we need to cast big names, but there are some well known actors who would be great for certain roles.

The season as a whole was SO much better than I dared to hope, despite daring to hope for something pretty awesome.

It was moderately thought provoking they cut the "when your womb quickens"- portion out from Mira Maz Duur's "ain't gonna happpen:)" - listing in E10.

If folks at HBO were determined enough to make as few PITA expensive castle backdrops as possible, I suppose it would be somewhat doable to cut the entire Riverrun from the series. In E10's Catelyn vs. Jaime, we already saw a erm, relocation of  one of the biggest scenes book version of Riverrun has ever offered.

The scene above is acually Aenarys killing Brandon and the Stark patriarch, apparently is was filmed but hasn't made it into the series yet. This comes from the ASoIaF forum BTW, those guys are pretty well-informed. So no resurrection for Neddy boy...

It was a throughly excellent series. It would be nice to see famous actors cast but equally the unknowns, such as Jaime's, Ayra's, Dany's and Vary's actors, have done great, great work which gives me every confidence in whomever they select.

Even my husband was seduced by the series and watched it with me although he is a feel good guy. I guess even misery can be pretty intoxicating when presented so seductively.

As many have said. Roll on series two! Winter can't come soon enough... ;)
