Actor Shaun Dooley tweeted that he auditioned for a "bored, depressed bloke" for Game of Thrones. Sounds like a Dolorous Ed to me.
Edit: First casting confirmation for season 2 is Natalie Dormer for Margaery Tyrell. She played Anne Boleyn on The Tudors. I like her for the role- she fits the look well and was very good in The Tudors.
Here's a fanart of Margaery that I like, by crisurdiales:

Oooh, I've just finished reading A Game of thrones and I know I'm just going to spoil the rest of the story for myself by asking this, but It's gonna takes some time 'till I get A Clash of Kings anyway. Did Lyanna go willingly with Rhaegar Targaryen? And, I got the impression from the way that Ned returned from the war and that tower of joy thing with Jon, that maybe Jon might have been a love-child? And as such, could be a contender for the throne, I know he's joined the Night's watch, but he might still have a claim.......Is anything I said even remotely true?

Hehe, I'm loving this intrigue! How have I never read these books before? I'm kinda hoping that Jon is a Targaryen though...I don't know why but I'm finding myself liking the Targaryens. They just seem regal and cool or something along those lines, it's hard to describe.

She is a good actress...but not really what I pictured Margaery looking like. They seemed to have aged Margaery up quite a bit then, no?

If Jon is R&L´s son then he would be Dany´s nephew I think. Last time I saw that was in the Amber books.

Or maybe it´s just Dawson Casting. I think Margaery was 16 in AFfC, while the actress isn´t still 20.
Yeah...Dormer was born in '82 according to imdb so she's getting close to 30. Not a huge deal as she can act just fine, but it will be more than a little wierd in the future given the potential marriages and all. I just always thought of Margaery as a little older than Joffrey.
So yeah, if there is one thing I've been a little disappointed in with the series its some of the casting doesn't match up how I pictured the people in the book (like Cersei or Cat). But so far the performances more than make up for that.

I'm only 200~ pages into A Game of Thrones but so far I'm quite amazed at how much they packed into the TV series. There were quite a few things I picked up on that they didn't explicitly spell out on the show. All the changes so far seem to be quite well considered except possibly for making all the Stark children follow Ned's looks. I don't really see the Tully influence that the books go on about for some of the kids. Also I think aging everyone up a couple of years was a wise move, both from a story and casting perspective.

One of my friends said it best when he said the TV show is really like the Cliffnotes version of the books. I don't think thats a bad thing either, as I'm amazed the show did as well in packing everything in without major chages from the books. But it gets more complicated the farther out they go from GoT.

Frankly the role he plays later on can be filled by any other bard just as well. I think they just didn't want to have to keep him around till then.Brockololly wrote...
And in rewatching the last episode, was the bard that had his tongue yanked out Marillion? I recall GRMM saying one male character in the first season had a different fate than in the books, so this would seem to be it. Not a huge thing, but makes me wonder how they'll do things should the show get to A Storm of Swords & Feast for Crows. Just seems kind of pointless.

Okay, so I'm mid-Storm of Swords, and I just read the scene with Melisandre visiting Davos in his cell. Is it just me, or does that prophecy sound like Daenerys, not Stannis? I wonder what Melisandre's going to do when she figures that out. Or does she already know and she's just using Stannis to shape events to her liking? Oooh, so many layers. Like an onion... knight.

We don't know the circumstances of Rhaegar taking Lyanna to the Tower of Joy. It's only told in secondhand bits here and there, so it's not clear if he kidnapped her or if she went willingly. There is rampant fan speculation that they were in love and that Jon Snow is actually Lyanna's child with Rhaegar, which Ned has called his own all those years in order to protect him from Robert's wrath against the Targaryens. That's my favored theory on what happened.
Just a note here: I'm pretty sure that Ned never actually calls Jon his son, at least never "on screen" in the books, so to speak. He says Jon is "his blood", he doesn't correct people when they call Jon "your bastard", but he never actually refers to Jon as his son.
Seems minor, but given Ned's honor, I personally find it significant. And yes, I personally do believe he's Lyanna's son, by Rhagaer, and Lyanna was not raped. Jon = love child.

SPOILERIFIC
@WeRTheBrox: I've figured all along that Melisandre had her sights higher than Stannis. He's useful as a military commander, but when the dragons show up? I figure he'll end up feeding the flames.

Hmm, just watched some of the TV series, and seeing we were just discussing some casting of actors and whatnot earlier, I have to say I wasn't too impressed with the actor they chose for Tywin Lannister. I really, didn't think he did the character any justice, he just didn't seem to have any forbidding or fearsome presence. He felt too under-stated for me. Plus, he had no sideburns which were described in the book (there were sideburns right?)! Did anyone else feel something similar, or was it just me?

This has probably been stated previously, and often, but hopefully, the rampant success of this show will kinda point the Dragon Age team back in the right direction.

Kinda book spoilerish:
Never really noticed Margaery much in the books. She only really stood out to me once, and that was in a Sansa chapter, when Sansa desperately tells her not to marry Joff. And I remember that more because it increased my sympathy for Sansa than anything else. I'm interested to hear who they cast as Stannis, Davos, Brienne and the Queen of Thornes. Apart from them, I don't think there's anyone I care about who isn't already in the show. There's Victarion, but I don't think he'll be in Season 2.

I'm feeling depressed. Could someone please post the the Tyrion-slapping-Joffrey clip?

Margaery is kind of in the background, but maybe they will show her a little more active in the political machinations. I always thought she was. She learned from the best. The TV show has tended to bring minor characters a little more center stage, ones we're not used to hearing from since they weren't POV characters in the books.

Oh man, really? I have a terrible crush on Charles Dance. I think he's perfect- he was also a heavy favorite in the fandom before they cast him. I believe Tywin is supposed to be bald, but I don't care, he's my Tywin now. His menace is in his cold political calculations. What I think has been genius about the series' portrayal of him is that they show him doing these things for honor and family legacy, so he isn't just presented as teh ebul even though we hear from Tyrion how sick he can be. It puts both Cersei and Jaime in perspective. (edit: oh, and man he looked hot in that red and black armorSlurms McKenzie wrote...

BTW are you the one who said you like the Targaryens? I do, too. You should make the effort to find the Dunk and Egg stories that are set around 90 years before the books, during the last hurrah of the Targaryens- The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. They are really good on their own merits but especially for Targaryen fans. Trouble is, they're scattered among various anthologies so a little hard to get at.

When his once-thick golden hair had begun to recede, he had commanded his barber to shave his head; Lord Tywin did not believe in half measures.

Yeah, Tywin not having the totally shaved head with just sideburns is a little annoying. I always liked his opening paragraph when they described why he looked like he did:When his once-thick golden hair had begun to recede, he had commanded his barber to shave his head; Lord Tywin did not believe in half measures.
I pulled this off GRRM's website and will just leave it here. Because Tyrions make people happy!
