My favorite character is definitely Daenerys Targaryen. Imo, she had the most character development and I found myself genuinely caring about her. And ironically, her marriage with a "savage" turned out to be one of the few genuine displays of love and affection, and it saddened me when Drogo died, his badassery aside. And the ending of episode 10 with her is just epic. She lost a husband and son (partially to her own carelessness), but she got 3 dragons like offsprings.
Tyrion is certainly awesome. I like Arya, Snow and Syrio. Littlefinger and the spider as well.
I liked Ned, though he was a fool.
All in all, great show can't wait for more. And I think I have a crush on Daenerys right now.

Varys is one of my favorite minor characters, and I heart him a lot in the TV series as well.Tyrion is certainly awesome. I like Arya, Snow and Syrio. Littlefinger and the spider as well.
Good news for those who were hoping for more battle scenes: Extras Northern Ireland put out a casting call for amputees.

If I'd read the book first I would've said there was no way it could be done as well as it was.
that's how I felt after reading the books and before I watched the first episode!
I completely agree with your assessment.
BTW, as you continue to read on, this series of novels is an ever-increasing crescendo of "ZOMG I can't believe GRRM went there" moments

I saw a Twitter discussion about Christopher Eccleston for Stannis. I don't know him and he's rather meh looking, same with their recommendation for Melisandre. Of course acting ability is what really counts.
Alan Rickman as Roose Bolton, that could work, though it's a little conventional I think. It should be someone who doesn't look like a bad guy, but can do a really, really creepy turn.
Ramsay Snow- That guy is too pretty. Way too pretty.
Ygritte- She's no waif. They need someone with muscles.

Well I just finished reading A Game of Thrones and predictably loved it considering my love of the series. Frankly it's the best adaption of a work I've even seen. I was surprised at how much was lifted wholesale from the books and stuck up on the screen with great acting to propel it. What changes were made I'd say (without having read the next 3 books) are completely for the better considering the medium it was being told in. At the very least nothing was made worse, just different. And I continue to be amazed by how much was packed into less than 10 hours of TV and how much of it I picked up on as someone who didn't read the book beforehand, even if it wasn't spelled out. If I'd read the book first I would've said there was no way it could be done as well as it was.
I've still a ways to go until finishing the book. My pace has been glacial, in fact. I gotta say, my memory of the story was skewed. I thought the show rushed through Dany's development, but reading it all again now, it's about the same in the book. There is detail missing on the program I feel enriches certain characters' development, though. Robb, Bran, and Jon suffer the most. We see none of Robb's awkward steps into shouldering lordship, little of Bran's psychic development, and not much of Jon's humorous side. They all come across as a bit flat on the program. I can see why Sar is not crazy about Jon now.
It was a great first season, but they are going to have to step up their game for ACoK. If not, certain characters are going to come across as pale shadows of themselves. I'm especially worried about Renly and Stannis. The former's HBO adaptation is well, crap.

Wow, Television Without Pity it has been years since I have been there. Last time I was there I saw the start of it selling out and it never did fix itself, now it still looks like it never got fixed.WeRtheBrox wrote...

Also the site made the word 'snark" if I recall. Boy am I "old".

Brienne of Tarth? WTF????
Role: Brienne of Tarth
Our Pick: Abbie Cornish
One of the strongest female characters in a series filled with memorable women, aspiring knight and skilled warrior Brienne of Tarth initially fights in Renley's army before switching her allegiance to Catelyn Stark. Abbie Cornish proved herself a solid ass-kicker in Sucker Punch, but there is the not-inconsiderable matter of her appearance -- specifically that she's gorgeous, while Brienne...has a really great personality. But that's where the magic of movie make-up comes in. In fact, this could turn out to be her Monster moment. Charlize Theron won an Oscar for playing ugly and doing the same might put Cornish on the road to an Emmy.
Stop and go back to the drawing board.

Right, so, on the very day I lay down my declaration, Eva Damen is tweeting that she's not Brienne. I hope I didn't jinx her!
Apparently, GRRM and David Benioff are huge Bioware fans and they made their decision after reading your post.
...if only you had made a better argument for hiring her
