No kidding. That is a whole other topic I will not get started on. And yes, I realize presentation is vital to an actor, and more so to an actress. I doubt plastic surgery would be as popular otherwise. I do not truly expect anyone to depict a character like Brienne accurately in translation to the screen. But I do reserve the right to wistfully wax over what could have been. :)

Yeah, its nice to see things as they could be. But just as a masked character will rarely appeared mask in a hollywood movie, or a movie will stick to the book it's based on, you'll get people who look the roles.

Lot of vanity in the acting world, and the only "Ugly" people you see either have a **** load of makeup or plastics on the, or just some stupid glasses. It can be dissapointing in the case of game of thrones, but expected. Hell they don't even keep the story consistant.

Emmy nominations are out and GoT got several, notably Peter Dinklage for best supporting (obvious- just give it to him now!) and the show as a whole for Best Dramatic Series. Several technical nominations also, and D & D got a writing nom for "Baelor," the episode with Ned's execution.

It's one of the best intros I've seen in years. The music and clockwork modelling is awesome. What makes it even better is I never expected much from the intro.

Yeah, it was awesome and great how it changed to reflect the scenarios in which each episode would take place. A real winner in my book!

At a book signing, GRRM said more major roles had been cast but contracts were still being worked out, and that he did think they would announce more at ComicCon.

@GvazElite: We made a book discussion thread so that spoilers from the books could be kept out of this one. Anything from A Game of Thrones is fair game in this thread, though, since season one is over.

Maybe this interview with GRRM was already posted but its a pretty good read- some book spoilers, but also stuff regarding the show and books and how they'll work in the future:

Some snippets:

On bigger battles versus budget for season 2:

Which episode of Game of Thrones are you writing next season?
The Battle of the Blackwater, God help me. David and Dan must hate me.

That’s the one where you have to be most conscious of budgetary decisions.
It’s very tough because we don’t have the budget to do the battle in the book. We just don’t.

Well, they have to be able to show the ships and what happens to them, right?

I hope so. We’ll see. I’m writing it. I’m cutting certain things. We’ll see once I turn it in if we can do it. When you look HBO’s Rome–

Loved Rome.
I loved it too, but what about the battles?

We see Caesar leave the tent to go to war, then he comes back and falls asleep.
Caesar leaves the tent. Pompey leaves the tent. Then we see Pompey’s banner in the mud. And Caesar comes back to the tent. The next episode, Pompey describes the battle to Pullo and Vorenus drawing it in the dirt with a stick to explain what happened. For the Battle of Actium, they open with Mark Anthony floating on a piece of wood — and Rome had a bigger budget than we do. I’ve been trying to tell the fans that. On some level they’re expecting the Battle of Pelennor Fields [from Peter Jackson's The Return of the King].

Fans don’t distinguish as much between mediums now.
They don’t. And television has set that up by being increasingly good. Back in the 1960s or ’70s, you could tell TV show from a movie in three frames just way it was shot and lit. But you can’t these days.

On deviating from the books:

Are there any changes the TV show made that you particularly liked?
I loved some of the new scenes they added. As a novelist, I have certain tools like internal monologue and the device of the unreliable narrator. I can have flashbacks and dreams, which are pretty hokey in a TV series. So they had to insert some new scenes. I loved the interplay between Varys and Littlefinger, which never occurred in the books since neither is a viewpoint character. I loved the scene of Drogo ripping out Mago’s throat, which was entirely new. But that’s going to have ramifications if we go the full length down the pike. I’ve talked to Dan and Dave about the butterfly effect — you’re familiar with the classic Ray Bradbury short story?

A Sound of Thunder. One of my favorites.
Step on a butterfly in the Pleistocene Era and it changes everything in year 2000. [MILD BOOK 6 SPOILER WARNING] So Mago is not dead in the books. And, in fact, he’s going to be a recurring character in Winds of Winter. He’s a particularly nasty bloodrider to one of the other Khals that’s broken away after Drogo dies. This is the challenge the shows face as we go forward. There will be divergences, they’re trying to be faithful and Dan and David are doing a wonderful job. But the books are plotted so intricately that you do step on a butterfly in season one and in season four you’re going to have to deal with that. There’s also another character, [the singer] Marillion, who also got his tongue ripped out in season one, and that doesn’t happen with the books. Joffrey makes that decision, but it’s an unnamed bard. Marillion [has more to do]. We ought to call it The Tongue Effect instead of The Butterfly Effect.

On the tourney in the book versus show:

Was there anything you missed from the book?
I wish the tournament was much bigger. They originally scripted in the first draft a parade of knights and a dozen jousts that they had to cut for budgetary reasons. And I would have liked the crowd to have been much bigger. This is like the Super Bowl in the books and draws people from all over the Seven Kingdoms.

On the TV show influencing the future books:

Is there any performance in the TV show that’s caused you to think differently about a character?
The performances have been great, but they’ve been great at capturing the characters as I saw them. The one exception is Natalia Tena as Osha. Cause she’s very different than in the book, but I think she’s more interesting. When I bring Osha back in Winds of Winter, I’ll have Natalia in mind and perhaps give the character more interesting things to do.

On the TV show catching up with the books and how they'll adapt the future books:

One big concern has been what if the TV series surpasses where you are in the books. For awhile, that seemed premature. Now that season one has done well, it’s worth asking.

There’s two questions here. The first is: How long will it take me to write the next book. Will Winds of Winter go smoothly or is it going to be Feast and Dance all over again? I certainly hope it’s not the latter. The other issue is: What is what is HBO going to do if we get a third season and beyond? Storm of Swords is a gigantic book. I was hoping they’d give us 12 episodes for Clash. So I don’t know how they’ll get everything in. But there’s no way they can get Storm into 10 or even 12. My hope is they’ll split that into two seasons. There’s nothing in the law that says each season must cover one book. The only danger of catching up is if we have to do all of Storm, and then Feast and Dance have to be re-combined. Then there’s a danger they would catch up with me. I think I’ll have Winds out by then, but they could catch up with me before [Book 7] A Dream of Spring.

I love you, Brockololly. Thank you so much for posting the snippets. I am choosing to be a glass half-full girl today and I think we'll see Winds of Winter before HBO gets to Storm of Swords events. *crosses fingers*

Hot off the Twitter presses, HBO has revealed that Melisandre will be played by Dutch actress Carice van Houten.  We recently saw her in the Sean Bean film Black Death, in a role that has some similarities, and she was very good in that.  Not how I pictured Melisandre, but I assume she'll get a dye job.  I think her character in Black Death was a redhead, in fact. (edit: no, blonde actually- so much for my memory)

Stannis will be played by Stephen Dillane.  He's probably best known for playing Thomas Jefferson in the miniseries John Adams, but he's been in a lot of roles so will probably seem familiar.  I hadn't thought of him at all, but I like him.

I friggin' *love* Flapper fashion. :D But I can't say I ever pictured Melisandre with a Flapper hair style. If you mean the actress, still no. She has nice cheekbones and a strong jawline that lends her a regal flair. I like that they chose an actress in my age range instead of a twenty-something. I did not imagine Melisandre as quite that young. She may not have the heart-shaped features bit down, but on the whole I like this choice.

You can't see it so well in the pic I posted (which is from Black Death- a half decent movie, actually, which most medieval movies aren't) but she's got a sort of heart-shaped face- a little more squared, I guess.  You can see it better in this shot.

She seems like a good pick to me.  I remember liking her voice.

I saw that shot, actually. I looked at all her photos before posting here. She looks great in my humble opinion, but yes, I think her face is slightly more square than heart. Still, she has the feel of Melisandre in her looks. That's good enough for me.

Well, purely on a shallow visual level, I'm disappointed. Surely, once she's all decked out in red she may look more the part and I can't say I've ever seen her act, but at least going from the pictures I was just looking through, she seems rather plain. Which is most definitely not how I'd describe Melisandre physically.

I have faith she'll do ok acting wise but as of now, hell, I'd say Brienne's actress is better looking than Mel. Thats not right.

Edit: Well, I take that back, she looks pretty good in this picture:

Still not sold on her as Melisandre necessarily, but we'll see...

Thats fantastic casting. Thats seriously awesome- not only because he's a damn good actor, but stick a close shaved beard on him and visually for me, thats Stannis. :wizard:

It's amazing how tastes can differ between people. I thought she looked good in most of her photos. >.< I like her face. The picture you linked has a good cleavage shot, but really, I find her features a more defining characteristic. I think what matters with Melisandre is presence more than sheer physical beauty. Something about Carice van Houten's face tells me she has that.

I am less impressed by Stephen Dillane. Then again that may work in his favor when playing Stannis. :P Given his few photos I feel a stunning *lack* of presence. Ultimately acting determines this more than looks, but he seems so... meh.

@Brock:  Go watch her in Black Death.  It's a very similar role, and she has a lot of presence in that film.  It's on Netflix streaming.  I should warn the queasy that it's pretty violent, but GoT viewers shouldn't have any trouble with that.  Posted Image

In other news:  The ASoIaF calendar art has all been revealed, so definitely go feast your eyes!  I love his notes on where he took inspiration.  Here's Melisandre.

Another one from John Picacio.  I liked his depiction of the Others.  He says GRRM referred the HBO comic book artist to this picture, so that sounds like an endorsement to me.

I like that rendition of the Others. Good detail on their armor and the background.

Melisandre is a mixed bag. I like how she was painted and the fire globules, but her anatomy looks screwy. That pose is awkward too. The way her neck bends to the left while her face is pointed slightly up and in the opposite direction is odd. Too bad really. I was ready to name that my favorite Melisandre art ever until I noticed those issues.

I'd recommend watching him as Jefferson in John Adams- he was awesome in that I thought.

I was afraid to peek in this thread until after I had finished reading Dance With Dragons - pleasantly surprised to see some casting for the next season has been confirmed

and that is lovely concept art for Melissandre
