Has anyone else seen GRRM kill a panda with a DWD hardcover?

Well... at least it wasn't a Stark. He always kills Starks. Whenever someone asks about Dance with Dragons, GRRM kills a Stark, I knowz it!:crying:

Just saw it. Glorious. Some alterations and misplaced scenes, but I don't care. It's a stellar adaptation. I love the intro sequence.

It was pretty good. The music felt uninspired at times, but that is a nitpick. It was oddly surreal to see where my imagination differs from this interpretation. I now have a burning urge to read the books again after watching that. >.<

Not much else to say. The problem with adaptations of books I already finished is having an idea where the story is headed. It takes all the fun out of speculation and plot discussion. :P

It's to bad Stars isn't running this, otherwise I'd watch it via Netflix. I guess I'll have to wait till I can buy the season. Image IPB

Sandor could have looked uglier. Here's hoping the Gregor looks as strong and ominous as he is described in the novels. Anyway, very good episode.

Did anyone else feel that it went way too fast though? Everything just seemed to go so...quick.

It was great!! Even knowing what would happen, there were so many moments. My only quibble was that I wanted more of the direwolves. You don't even see Sansa and Arya with theirs.

We
So color me very impressed by how HBO has adapted the first few pages of George RR Martin's novel. If the quality of the remaining episode and succeeding ones match or surpass, we're in for a treat. A Song of Ice and Fire looks to be great.

(Husband)

Am I the only one who is worried about the series?

I think it makes a lot more demands on casual viewers than other similar shows like Rome and the Tudors.   That I find problematic because of what happened with Rome...     While it does have its own built in ready made fan base if they are going to base renewing the show based on ratings then I worry....   (Rome was eventually cancelled because of the dip in ratings and the high cost of production even though they had invested a lot in the show in terms of building massive sets, large costume collections etc.)

My big question is how does it play for people with ZERO knowledge of the source?

I have a few friends who are watching the show for their first foray into it. They have it on their DVRs, because--having not read the books--they didn't understand what the big deal was. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing their thoughts.

I think it could be confusing at first for those who haven't read any of the books. There are a lot of plots and subplots in the first episode in which the books does a better job at explaining, in my opinion.

I haven't read the books yet, so I can't compare the story, characters or the world itself to the source, but nonetheless, I am very surprised by the lack of fluff and over emotional scenes that dominate other productions. (camelot, the legend of the seeker)
Having read my share of fantasy books, I can see that this tv show is staying close to the typical adult fantasy tone, that's dark, unapologetic and complex in it's characters and their connections/dealings with each other.
The thing is though that no movie or tv show will ever be able to cover anything close to the full extend of a books content.

I liked it so, so much. Could do without that much graphic sex, though. We get it, some of the characters are lechers.

I was a bit surprised by how graphic the sex and violence was at first. Then I remembered what the show is based on and stopped caring. I rarely watch HBO programming. As a result I have forgotten how much they like to push the envelope in that regard. :P

I think the pilot may be confusing for anyone that has not read the books. The plots are easy enough to follow, but figuring out the geography and following so many characters at once may prove daunting. I only see that becoming worse as GoT progresses, since the books have so many POV characters and multiple related events occurring simultaneously. I also wonder if the fact there is no real protagonist will play well with unfamiliar audiences. I enjoyed the show immensely, but I have read the books, so...

My husband knew nothing about the books aside from the fact that I read them.. and love him though I do, he isn't always the sharpest knife in the drawer BUT he followed it just fine... though he did pause it once and say: "I think i got messed up, I thought that was her brother...." to which I had to answer "Yes, he is her twin brother." o.0

I'm hooked after the first episode! I haven't read the books, but HBO's production values clearly show! It was great.  There was just enough violence, nudity, and story to make it worthy of watching.

If the show follows the source material this could be my new favorite show after The Sopranos ofcourse!

I still haven't read the books though I been meaning to buy them since Dragon Age Origins launced and well yea never happened. I'd like to buy them now but should I considering the show is out?

Currently reading Dune so Fire and Ice books would have to wait to >.<

According to some of the reviews that came out before the show's premiere, the critics that haven't read the book were able to understand what was going on just fine after the first two episodes so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I'm sure HBO will make a huge effort to make the show approachable by anyone regardless if they've read the book or not.

This is HBO, though.  Image IPB

I suppose at some point they'll explain that it used to be common practice for royal siblings to marry, so there's some background to Jaime-Cersei besides just skankiness.

Viserys was so spot on perfect.  Definitely going to love to hate him until he gets what's coming to him.

I would honestly wait until the show is over, and then maybe read the books. It will make the season finale that much more powerful if you don't know what's going to happen.

The "main character" for many right now is most likely Eddard, heh...Sean Bean likely helped drag in a lot of unfamiliar people, so some are probably watching for him.

I would read the first book before the show is over. It will make the end of the book that much more powerful if you don't know what's going to happen.

I would watch the shows as they air, read the book during the long week between and then re-watch the entire season in one day after it is over before starting the next book.... or is that over-kill?

What's with the complaints of too much graphic sex. There was just 1 sex scene. You also didn't see any nudity in the sex scene. There was also some nudity and dry humping but not that much.
