Anyone got anything planned tonight?

I've been stocking up on various beverages and snacks.

Whoever disturbs me from 9 to 10 will be given a choice between their tongue or their hands.

I can't catch the show as I don't have HBO.

So I plan to go outside and take a dip into a beautiful creek.

I love streams.

I suppose it will be uploaded 20 minutes after it airs. I don't have Showtime so I'll have to..... PURCHASE Shameless later tonight.

6pm here in San Jose, I would guess that's the same everywhere.  Replays at 8 and 10pm.

As I told a friend moments ago, I give the season two premiere a B. Maybe a B-. Some very good stuff there. Some not so good. I want to see it a few more times before going into detail. However, my first impression was that there were too many clunky transitions save for one to Dany. It was also condensed as hell. Obviously they cannot fit everything from the books in there, but it felt less like season one's surgical editing than a hacksaw chopping off chunks of fat. XD

The way certain plot elements that were slowly unraveled in ACoK for dramatic effect were dropped in with no subtlety at all.

Favorite scenes on first blush:

- Watching the Seven burn on the beach of Dragonstone.
- Stannis getting all nitpicky with his scribe.
- Cersei echoing Xykon's perspective on the true nature of power to Littlefinger.
- Robb's conversation with Jaime.
- The intro including Dragonstone in it. I almost squee'd.

Wow. Great episode.

Only complaints:

-The episode didn't start with the red comet
-The prologue was pretty much cut (Plus Maester Cressen seemed too foolish)
-Direwolves look a bit peculiar

Overall, good introduction. It had the grand scale feel of a feature film, but they still got the basic plot out well.

Imagine if it was on a non-premium channel like AMC with commercials every 5 minutes. The story would SUCK.

The bolded part - oh, so much.

I very much enjoyed the episode - the series in general is done very well, this episode no exception.

HOWEVER - as noted above, I see things just pounded at us, instead of mentioned subtly and then revealed as important dramatically later.  I'll refrain from book spoilers, so I won't be specific.  But . . . as in Season 1, when the incest angle was given to us flat out in the first few minutes of episode one, they did it again.  Ugh,

Second note - at the rate they're re-writing the book to make this show, and knowing how involved GRRM is in the show . . . . I'm completely resigned to not seeing Winds of Winter until about 2015.

No doubt. However, tonight's episode underscored it is better to treat this program as its own entity. Comparing it directly to the books would be maddening. Some of the changes in tonight's episode were severe enough it radically changes the characterization of certain characters.

I'm pretty much resigned to that fact- that events which had clever and subtle buildup and foreshadowing in the books will simply bludgeon you over the head in the show. Like Dany and the none too subtle foreshadowing of the dragon eggs in season 1.

It just sort of reinforces my thinking of the show as the condensed, Cliff Notes version of the books- they get all the major points in more or less, but the nuance is often times lost in the interest of keeping all the plot points present.

Yeah, I kind of have a problem when people compare movies and TV shows to books like the two are competing. It's understandable that the discussions will crossover. But it's impossible to appease to every aspect of someone's imagination or cover EVERYTHING. There are some obvious things that they simply cannot go into, like a character's deepest thoughts. (Unless they were doing some type of narration, which I'm glad they're not).

It did feel like they crammed a lot into this episode. I think it's primarily just trying to get the introduction done with in this episode so they can branch off into deeper storyline throughout the season. The 10 episode limit is also a huge issue. I kinda wish they'd lift that to 12. I don't think it would effect the quality of the show in any negative way.

Oh, and BTW - DIREWOLVES!!!!!!!!

Grey Wind particularly looked rather huge in the scene with Jaime.

They looked great. I can't wait to see Ghost.

Its funny- the dragon and direwolves looked great. The only special effect that looked really odd was the comet in the shot with Bran. Odd.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the episode. I thought it moved along really well and did a good job of setting up everything for subsequent episodes. My main complaint would be how they handled the intorduction of Dragonstone and Mel, Davos and Stannis. Its sort of an issue thats present in the prologue of the book too, in that you're just tossed in with these new characters, but its doubly so in the show where they skip straight to the burning of the Seven and they don't do much to set that up.

Then you have Cressen's death which just comes across as really odd and almost pointless since they did next to nothing to set it up. I almost wonder if they wouldn't have been better off just cutting that completely.

But otherwise, Mel, Davos and Stannis were better than I could have hoped. They seem to have nailed Stannis' personality- I loved the scene where he's getting all OCD on the letter. And little touches like Mel's ruby glowing were nice. She looked pretty good, I must say.

Beyond that, Robb is a badass. Grey Wind is awesome. Maester Luwin is awesome. Bran warging is awesome. Tyrion is a badass. Tyrion versus Cersei seems like it'll be amusing this season. Although I really dislike Shae. I never liked her much in the book either, but in the show I just find her and her actress rather obnoxious. Same goes with Ros.

And I liked how they gave Janos Slynt some screentime. Although, did they change the murdering of the bastards to having Joffrey order it or Cersei? Its not entirely clear in the show.

Was the one wife of Craster's that spoke up supposed to be Gilly? I guess we'll see her sometime soon. I just got excited when they brought up Mance Rayder and the King Beyond the Wall. Ugh...I can't wait for next season already.:o
And what was up with Dontos having Captain America armor?

I'm guessing next episode will still kind of be a whirlwind back and forth between locations and then it'll settle down more, giving certain plots more screentime per episode, especially Arya. If the show follows the book, then I'd wager Tyrion and Arya get the most screentime of all the characters, although they're beefing up Jaime and Robb this season too. I just hope those sorts of decisions don't make the whole affair seem like its spreading itself too thin. There are enough good characters in the books that they don't really need to be making up new characters or showing all new events too much.

Oh, and the preview for the rest of the season if anyone missed it.

Was the scene where Cersei slapped Joffrey a new addition? I don't recall it from the books.

If it isn't, it should have been.

I love any scene that involves Joffrey being physically or mentally abused. :wizard:

Agreed.

*Cough* It would be awesome if Tyrion were to slap him again later this season. *Cough*

Yes.

Grey Wind did. He made a certain character crap his pants.

Haven't seen the premiere yet so I dared but a glance over the latest posts. Appologies if this has been posted already! Good news are worth of little repetition though.

"In March 2012, HBO ordered the production of a third and fourth season, which are to cover the third novel in the series, A Storm of Swords, and which are to be filmed concurrently in Northern Ireland from June 2012 to about February 2013."

This gives writers some remotely satisfying options  to end the series properly, should HBO decide to pull the plug too soon.  I'm really glad, was a pessimist about this and borderline sure we'd get 2 seasons and classic HBO style anti-finale. Also, I'm really glad they aren't trying to force Storm of Swords  in 10 episodes!!
