Have to say, the Gendry/Arya thing is a little weird, but iunno there's some chemistry going on there. Maybe in a few years Maisie.

What are the issues people have with the Gendry/Arya scene? Because it's almost wholly true to the book conversation with the biggest difference being when it takes place. I've decided to reread A Clash of Kings and I ran across that scene last night and I was thinking the difference would be bigger from what everyone was saying and I remembered.

Beats me. The only difference I saw in that scene was based on my own perception. On my not-too-long-ago reread of ACoK, I read that exchange as serious rather than teasing. I pictured Gendry fumbling to be proper with Arya. Whereas in the program they played it off as teasing. Gendry struck me as too much of a wet blanket to picture him gently mocking Arya.

Then again, I missed the whole thing between Melisandre and Stannis, so clearly my comprehension sucks.

I don't think people have a problem with the scene, we were discussing the fandom "shipping" them romantically.  Of course fandom ships everyone and their brother/ cousin/ horse, so there you go.

Ratings held steady at 3.8 million, the same as last week.

Yay season 3!

I have to say, as much as I'm looking forward to a certain event that'll no doubt be in Season 3, I really think Season 4 will have way more awesome in it.

I asked my mom who her favorite characters were after she watched Season 1.

She said Ned Stark, Robb Stark, and Catelyn Stark.

Let that marinate in your mind for a while.

Willing to give "Yara" a chance if she can get the acting down, but visually I always pictured Asha as more like the fan made pictures on the left side there.

I almost think that Osha's actress, Natalia Tena would have made a good Asha, at least visually speaking:

Eh, I think the version in the show looks more like a greyjoy. The fan versions are too pretty / sexy. Imo.

I have to admit, Osha is one of my favorite characters. Both in the books and show.

I don't need her to be pretty/sexy but so far the actress (who looks fine IMO) does not portray her with the swagger/physical confidence that I imagined. Asha/Yara is a very strong, talented confident women in a part of the setting that makes the rest of the seven kingdoms look like a feminist haven by comparison. The girl we have now is practically hunched over in some scenes

This is the Asha I want to see:

I don't have a problem with the actress not fitting that fan art. KoP is right in that most of those are too beautified. My issue is with the acting. Yara is devoid of Asha's bearing. Where is her strength and pride? Where is her confidence and condescension?

Unless this actress nails the scene when Asha introduces Theon to her "husband"--assuming that scene is kept, I'm not holding out any hope.

Edit: Ninja'd. :bandit:

A little bit, yes, but that really goes for the most commonly seen fanarts of all characters, ASoIaF and otherwise. If you go by most (sadly not all) of the officially sanctioned artwork however you get depictions that while naturally most probably only rarely exactly like you pictured them in your head are typically very reasonable approximations to GRRM's descriptions, but the actor they have for "Yara", FSM bless her, doesn't look anything like Asha at all. Obviously facial likeness to the respective book character should always be merely a bonus, not the driving decision behind casting, but she honestly looks like a common rock wife or salt wife, not a warrior captain commanding a ship, let alone the Iron Fleet. Truth be told, she reminds me of the pub lady in Little Britain, only with less of a witty personality (judging by what little we've seen so far).

No, I've gotten used to some of the characters not really matching up visually.

But, this is Theon's description of Asha before he knows who she is, from A Clash of Kings:

Theon turned to give her an appraising glance. He liked what he saw. Ironborn, he knew at a glance; lean and long-legged, with black hair cut short, wind-chafed skin, strong sure hands, a dirk at her belt. Her nose was too big and too sharp for her thin face, but her smile made up for it. He judged her a few years older than he was, but no more than five-and-twenty. She moved as if she was used to a deck beneath her feet.

Basically, a younger Claudia Black with shorter hair would have been perfect, IMO:

I guess it kind of feeds into how I think they botched her reveal in the show too, compared to the book. In the book its great and has a lot of build up with Theon telling her to her face how ugly and awful his sister is and how he'll marry her off to some lord and outsmart his uncles. Then her reveal is great because Theon was bad mouthing her appearance as he remembered her as some flat chested pimply big nosed girl and while she still has the big nose, she's otherwise pretty attractive and charismatic.

Again, I'll take it right from A Clash of Kings:

All he could do was stand and gape at her. Asha. No. She cannot be Asha. He realized suddenly that there were two Ashas in his head. One was a little girl he had known. The other, more vaguely imagined, looked something like her mother. Neither looked a bit like this...this...this...

"The pimples went when the breasts came," she explained while she tussled with a dog, "but I kept the vulture's beak."
Theon found his voice. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Asha let go of the hound and straightened. "I wanted to see who you were first. And I did." She gave him a mocking half bow. "And now, little brother, pray excuse me. I need to bathe and dress for a feast. I wonder if I still have that chainmail gown I like to wear over my boiled leather small clothes?" She gave him that evil grin, and crossed the bridge with that walk he'd liked so well, half saunter and half sway.

Basically, Asha has to have some swagger. But some of that (IMO) comes from the fact that she could physically kick your ass. Yara...I don't know, she doesn't look particularly warrior like or dangerous. In episode 2 she just seemed way more morose and subdued than how she is presented in the books.

Its a shame, since Asha is probably one of my favorite characters in the books but I'll give her a chance.

This is my favorite art depiction of Asha- from Fantasy Flight Games.  Confidence, and she looks like she could actually use that axe hanging on her belt (though the axe itself is poorly designed).  Maybe Gemma Whelan's version will grow on me, who knows.

I agree and would add that most of them are too skinny. It takes some real musculature and heft to throw and catch an axe after all, and the TV version's jerkin seems to hint at that.

Fans imagined Bra-armor wearing " warrior" straight from fantasies of 12 year old geek boys and/or cover of some R.A Salvatore novel and got a more ordinary woman instead:(
..Ok t'was unfair, some of them are real good.

I don't remember her from books that accurately but..is her beauty and smoking hotness by our standards  so well established there? IIRC Theon's exceptional  lust for her was mostly due to way she carries herself, so to speak? I think it  likely Theon feels exceptional lust for whicever woman is nearest:p

Yes it is hard to take in some of the changes. Why do they feel the need to ruin a perfectly good story that is in the books? Season 1 was very faithful to Game of Thrones, besides some differences. Here's it's like they are making freaking huge differences.

I mean seriously Stannis having sex with Melisandre?

Yeah... wtf was that?

Even his sister.

After watching the second season, I'm curious what's the motivation behind incest in the story. I get the historical need to inject it into the story, but it doesn't seem that it's driven by preserving bloodlines, but either love or lust. It makes me very curious about the author.

In ASOS, Melisandre heavilly implies she and Stannis had sex.

Goddamn it.

My stepbrother overheard that I was into Game of Thrones and as always he's now trying to latch on to it, because apparently anything and everything I'm into is cool.

"Who's the blonde kid?"

Joffrey.

"Lamphrey?"

Joffrey.

"*unintelligible*"

JOFFREY.

"Ooooh, Joffrey."

*shuts door*
