Mass Effect Genesis glitch - Can't save Kaiden
#1

This was getting towards midnight, so I decided to leave it & try again after I got home from work today.
This time, I tried starting a brand new game with a female Shephard, and tried to save Kaiden by saving Ash, my theory being that the game might be reading the opposite choice at that section. Nope, Kaiden still died.
So, it looks like the game is refusing to let me save Kaiden, and I think the easiest thing might be just deleting the DLC/Patch data on the PS3, and redownloading the Ceberus Network & armour/weapon DLC, playing the game to the point that I'll know Kaiden is alive, and then letting the game download the patches & Arrival, but if anyone has any ideas that don't require waiting for everything to download, I'll be grateful.

Me I am still using 1.00.

I said to save the council and during the first mission I speak to Jacob and he tells me I left the council to die and let the humans take over.
Wut?!
I'm going to delete the patch and DLC and replay the intro to that point and see if my decision has registered properly and report back.
If anyone has any other insight into this problem I'd like to hear it too.

Seems it would make a lot more sense to play the comic before you do anything in the game, not after the intro.
Ugh, sorry I am hi-jacking your thread. I will let you know if my game registers my decision after removing the patch and DLC - if it works it may work for your decision too.
Edit: Nevermind, seems I am just new to ME on PS3... the Genesis comic won't trigger at all without the Cerberus pack which I wasn't aware of. So I am going to try it without Arrival installed... perhaps that is causing the glitch for both of us?

It's strange... the game talks about whether or not Shepard saved the council before you even get to go through the Genesis comic so it talks as if you didn't save the council before you get to make the decision... surely that's not right?
That line was taken out of the PS3 version. It was in the demo, and maybe it's still there if you don't have the comic.

Yeah it seems to happen if you don't download and install the Cerberus pack. After installing it there are subtle dialogue changes so when the council are referenced their status isn't mentioned at all. I played ME1 and ME2 on PC and never had any of these issues before ~.~
I prefer console gaming though so here I am... just hoping the damn game registers my decision properly this time.<_<

*sigh*
Going to attempt a final try at this; installing the Cerberus Pack but not the patch and see if it can correctly accept the Genesis decisions then. If not then I think I am genuinely going to write off buying any further Bioware games until a good 6 months after release.
I just had a nightmare playing DA2 glitched to all hell, and now I'm getting the same crap in ME2? This kind of thing really isn't acceptable.

So, the current solution - Delete all the DLC & Patches, redownload the Cerberus Network & any other DLC bought before Arrival (Mostly so that Arrival doesn't appear mid-game) & start the game, ignoring the patches. Play through the game past getting the Normandy, and go see Anderson at the Citadel, asking about Kaiden/Ash. Save the game, quit to the XMB before downloading the patches & reloading the game, at which point talk with Anderson to make sure it hasn't changed anything.
Or just wait/hope BioWare fix it shortly.

Did you start a Brand New Career with 1.03 installed and the Genesis Comic and Kaiden is always dead? Or is it via NG+? Or?
If you could be very detailed and lay out your issue in a very step by step fashion. Then give it a try following EXACTLY your steps again to make sure you didn't miss something in the steps. I ask this because I can't reproduce this on my PS3 at all, and I am using a Retail copy of the game on a normal PS3.

Wait the new patch is 1.03 i thought 1.02 was the new patch?
Sorry depending on the region this is the First, Second or Third Patch. For example, this will be the first patch in the Japanese region, I believe it's the second in the North American and the third in Europe. The patches have just been rolled up differently but effectively everyone is on the same page. For Sake of easier understanding it would be better to call this one the 'Early April Patch'

Yes I can confirm it is indeed the patch causing the problem. I just got to the same point again with the Cerberus Pack installed but no patch and now Jacob responds correctly. What a farce... *sigh*
So yeah, your advice is probably best... stick with it until you pass the point where Jacob and Miranda ask you about Kaidan/Ashley and I should probably hold off installing the patch uintil I'm past the point where I meet the council.
Fingers crossed the NPCs continue to respond correctly even after the patch is installed... best to make a save before installing the patch just in case things go wrong... again!

Okay.
Note: Both Arrival & the latest patch are currently installed, and it's an EU PS3.
NG+ Attempt (Attempted twice)
1 - Select "Import ME2 Character" & the file you want to use.
2 - Play through the opening.
3 - Genesis choices
-- Spare the Rachni
-- No relationship
-- Wrex lives
-- Sacrifice Ash/Kaiden lives
-- Save the Council
-- Anderson joins the Council
4 - When speaking with Jacob & Miranda, Jacob stated that Kaiden had died.
New Game Attempt
1 - Create a new female character.
2 - Play through the opening.
3 - Genesis choices
-- Kill the Rachni
-- Relationship with Kaiden
-- Wrex lives
-- Sacrifice Kaiden/Ash lives
-- Save the Council
-- Anderson joins the Council
4 - When speaking with Jacob & Miranda, Jacob once again stated that Kaiden had died.
Haven't been able to try any workarounds, TV has been otherwise occupied.

I installed the patch (1.02) and then Cerberus Pack; the complete arsenal bundle and then the Arrival DLC.
I started the game as a normal new game (not NG+) and made my choices in the Genesis comic. To be thorough, my other Genesis decisions were:
* Save the Rachni
* Relationship with Kaidan
* Save Wrex
* Sacrifice Ashley / Save Kaidan
* Save the Citadel Council
* Backed Anderson
I then progressed to the point where you first meet the Illusive Man. Afterwards I talk to Jacob and when I ask him why he joined Cerberus he mentions that the council are dead and humans moved in to take their place - all this despite the fact I chose to save the Citadel Council during Genesis.
First I tried playing the game without Arrival to see if that was triggering the glitch (to be sure I deleted all saves, all settings and the DLC & Patches data). I installed the Cerberus Pack and the 1.02 patch ONLY. However, the same error occured.
Second I tried without Arrival AND without the patch. Again, I deleted all saves, all settings and the DLC & Patches data, then reinstalled the Cerberus Pack ONLY.
This seemed to fix the problem, I progressed to the same point, spoke to Jacob and he says that humans gained a seat on the council rather than that the council are dead and humans took their place.
I assume then, that it is the 1.02 patch causing the glitch.
Edit: Might also be worth my mentioning that I am in Europe (UK) and I have the 1.02 patch, not 1.03 like it seems other Europeans have. Is that correct?

I've played through the game several times before on PS3 before the latest patch and had none of the problems I mentioned in my above post. The problems have only occurred after I downloaded this latest version, and via the 'New Game' option (i.e. not a new game via 'Import ME2 character' [NG+]). Don't know wether or not that makes a difference but just thought I'd mention it anyway just to be thorough.
Genesis choices:
- Romance Liara (no problems)
- Saved Rachni Queen (no problems)
- Saved Wrex (no problems)
- Sacrificed Ash (Dialogue with Jacob & Illusive Man so far suggests that in fact Kaidan died and Ash is still alive despite my choice in Genesis, although I have not yet reached Horizon so I don't know who is actually alive in-game yet)
- Saved Council (As I mentioned above, I WAS able to meet with the counci, although NPCs react to me as though I let Destiny Ascension be destroyed)
- Chose Anderson as councillor (No problems until Udina entered the room during my meeting with Anderson. At that point, Udina said something about how Anderson was his advisor, implying that Udina was in fact the Councillor. The roles then reverted back to normal once Udina left the room [i.e. Anderson referred to Udina as HIS advisor].
Sorry if this has all got very confusing...some of the more subtle touches are hard to explain (I'm trying my best). If any of the character choices have an effect here is the setup I used for this playthrough:
- Male character (default appearance)
- Colonist
- War Hero
- Sentinel
- Bonus power: Barrier

It is starting to look like that the council decision, who you save and sacrifice, and if you choose Anderson or Udina seem to be the opposite of what you actually choose based on what i have been reading so far.
Seems to be very glitched though... sometimes it chooses the opposite decision, other times it chooses the right decision but NPCs act as if you chose the other option causing all sorts of chaos.

Yeah i just added that to my summary to. I wonder how this happened? Did it have something to do with them fixing the new game+ glitch maybe and it changed some of the coding for the comic? All i can say is i am going to be very upset if it messes up my choices on my almost completed playthrough as i was planning on exporting that character as my renegade character to 3 and do not want to have it all out of wack
