Custom placeables not showing in-game

I'm not sure what it is, but it seems like creating custom placeables is bugged to hell.  No matter what I can do, my custom placeables (made by creating a custom placeables_types.GDA) don't show up in-game and they only seem to show up in the editor half the time.  I've tried giving them all sorts of string IDs, auto-assigning the IDs, etc. and nothing seems to work no matter how many times I try.  I'm honestly at a loss.

The only other reference I can find to this problem is here:

However, I haven't been able to find a solution to this at all save for "keep trying".  Does anyone have experience in dealing with this?  It's making progress on my module more or less impossible, since I need to be able to open conversations with certain objects that require non-standard appearances.

I suspect this is a special case of the M2DA dropdown bug.

There's clearly some bad code in either the save or the export function which sometimes causes the toolset to "forget" custom 2DA information.

The immediate symptom can either be that custom information is missing from a dropdown (such as placeable appearance), or an error message during save/export.

I find that if I reopen the toolset as soon as the error occurs, and save/export the last resource I was working on again, both the toolset and the game have integrity (until the next time the error is reported).

If I need to make several resources which require custom dropdown selections, I try to make them all without saving or exporting, then save/export the lot.

I've tried re-opening and re-exporting multiple times over... but I guess if you can get it working once, you're good to go. Sigh. I guess I'll just keep trying until it works out.

Thanks for the help though, good to see I'm not alone.

EDIT: The weirdest thing is that I don't get the error half the time, yet the items still don't show up in-game regardless.  Sometimes I'll even be using the Toolset and they'll disappear in mid-usage, upon closing and re-opening the resource.

EDIT: After about a dozen attempts, I've had absolutely no luck at all in getting them to show in-game unless I use one of the default appearances.

I finally got it working after using an extremely low range of IDs. However, I fear this might cause conflicts with existing placeables, especially in DLCs. Furthermore, due to the size/positioning of one of my placeables, clicking on it in the context needed is impossible anyway, so I'm going to go the route of using invisible boxes instead. Not as nice because you can't highlight the objects, but I'd rather do that than have to rework a bunch of dialogue, or potentially conflict with official content and other mods.

Probably academic, then, but I can confirm I have this working with IDs of 17000 (using an existing prop model for the appearance).

IIRC this was more buggy than most tables, but it was fine once I followed the discipline - open the toolset, make the placeable, put it in the area, then save/export both (doing absolutely nothing else in between steps).

Either way, things are working now... lacking the highlight is unfortunate, but not that big a deal in the scheme of things if it means avoiding conflicts with the core resources, DLCs, other mods, etc. Thanks for your input, it was quite helpful in determining my options.
