I have now completed 3 playthroughs, and Isabella has only returned with the book in the one where I romanced her. Any advice for getting her friendship high enough to return without a relationship? II have watched some tips, and guides, and playthroughs and have decided " The Bitter Pill" and "Night Terrors" are two very good quests to take her along for, if you have any others that would be appriciated because this is my last achievement to get. Thanks!
Isabella returning the book

What happens when she doesn't return the book? How do you get the Qunari to leave?

The only way the Qunari understand- you challenge the Arishok to a thumb wrestling duel.

Same as if you do not let them take her. You can either duel the Arashok, or you can refuse the duel and kill them all.

When you meet up with Ninette's husband, make sure you pick the choice where you say hes terrible and refuse to help him because hes vile. Also the magistrate's quest, kill Kelder and Isabela will approve as well. Also make sure that you bring Isabela along when you meet Martin and help him with his quest.

Without her return, it's possible for the duel to not even be brought up (Fenris not in party, or the Arishok thinks you are a P.O.S.) and you have to fight ALL the Qunari in the room and the Arishok.

This fight is actually a lot more interesting than dueling him.
What happens if you're not at friendly status but tell her she gets the book?

I was at friendly, just apparentlly not enough. I said she had the book, but she did not return to give it back. Another playthrough for supplier is shot. I will be starting again tonight or tomorrow.

So her default behavior is to bail out on you no matter what huh?
This narrow path approach to plot consequences starts to get irritating. It seems that you have little choice but to systematically follow certain choices. It shares the same problem ME2 had with having to farm paragon/renegade points or being "punished" by being locked out of the ability to solve key moments in the plot.
It feels like you have to choose whether you prefer to have gameplay or story; these two don't coexist well together in DA2.

You have to have gotten her Questioning Beliefes discussion in order for her to come back. Which you only get at 50% friend/rival.

Just save at the start of Act 2. You need to get to 50% friendship or rivalry and complete her Questioning Beliefs quest before doing her "To Catch a Thief" quest. There's approximately 165 friendship points available in acts 1+2 without romancing her, so getting 50 is not that difficult. For more information, I suggest reading the Isabela FAQ linked in my sig.

VERY odd. The first play-through, she (Isabella) came back with the book (we were rutting but she wasn't what Merrill was, lol) and attempted to reconcile the situation. What is amazing is that I used Hawke's most vicious words at that time for her actions- and it still did NOT stop the Arishok, in fact, it was Fenris who knew their language and said Hawke had the right to challenge because of his status with the Qunari. So, the duel was on, I skewered him good- and yet Isabella STAYED! It also did not effect our friendship status. In THIS play-through, though we have rutted again- she never came back to return the relic at the fight- and I am guessing no quest remains in the final chapter- however- her and Bethany still are shadowed as friends in the group. To have BOTH back would have been killer. I didn't particularly like the way Hawke acted toward Bethany after she was DEAD and resurrected- it was an emotionless stupid thing- at best it should have been a tearful reunion! It seems the game loses it's soul in the final 'years' with the mages and templars- although some amazing new quests have opened in this playthrough.

And unfortunately on my playthrough, I got her Questioning Beliefs quest AFTER she left with the tome. She didn't come back. <_<
Not like it mattered since I ended up with the Worthy Rival achievement, but still dumb.
