femHawke is beyond a doubt the best character and VO I've seen to date. This used to be femShepard. I'll say that there are other factors than just the VO though. The facial animations are better than ever before, marvelously supporting the VO. The dialogue wheel now has more and clearer options than before thanks to the icons, helping you to produce the kind of response you're trying to get at. There's also the inclusion of the new sarcastic response line, which pretty much rocket boosted the personality of Hawke into spheres previously undiscovered in RPG's. And finally, a british accent would be dubious at best in otherwise "american" accented titles.

But it doesn't remove the fact that Jo Wyatt's performance is nothing short of perfect. Jennifer Hale is sublime, but even she has some lines that are just uncharacteristically void of emotion, or angry lines that sound way too exaggarated. There were averages mixed in between the great stuff. But Jo Wyatt has none of that. There are no averages, no momentary lapses. I'm sure someone can come up with something that I missed, but so far I can't believe how every single line she says sounds like she means it, without exaggarating it. Every. Single. Time. Perhaps the writers or the studio recording staff were able to give the VO better advice this time around pertaining to the surrounding circumstances in the game, explaining the better emotional stress in each situation. I don't know. All I can say is that this is the first perfect performance I've ever heard pretty much. Especially on such a big scale where you'd expect some flaws even from a top-grade professional.

As for the looks, well, seeing as they're always customized, I can't really comment on that. But I was able to produce several different faces of different ethnicities etc that all looked great as opposed to the few available on DAO, nevermind the 1-2 available on ME. So I consider that an improvement as well. Also, the hair is animated. That's a great touch!

What he said!

The default Fem Hawke character design is absolutely stunning and Jo Wyatt delivered a standout performance.

I think both male and fem hawke were done really well. But I have to say that the female hawke has the edge when it comes to playing the 'wise/sarcastic' persona.

I can't speak to the acting, I can only say that I enjoyed the male Hawke. The female animations made that Hawke unplayable for me.

Although I mostly agree with you that femhawke's VA is awesome, there was some exggeration or gaps between lines especially for star and aggressive options. There are some moments when she sounds all nice and cuddly (even though your dominant personality is aggressive one) then goes like very offensive all of a sudden depending on which option you choose.

I liked the sarcastic male Hawke the best. Some of his dead-pan lines totally had me in stitches, and I loved his interactions with Varric and Isabella. For the diplomatic and aggressive options, though, I prefered the female Hawke.

Plus that scene with that DeLauncet apostate in the hanged man as a lady hawk had me in stitches!!

DeLauncet"Hey are u a mage, cause u certainly mage-icked my breath away"
Lady Hawke "I need a bath after hearing that" or "You need more experience with women"

Sheer epicness with her tone of voice :)

i also noticed that male Hawkes lines could sometimes be a little robotic. Female Hawke has a better voice

I think I actually prefer male Hawke, though only slightly (I also haven't played a lot of lady Hawke). Both were very well done, I thought.

Funnily 2h combat seems more realistic with a chick, don't know why.

They did a pretty outstanding job with her. My next runthrough is sarcastic female rogue (this time with my creation instead of default Hawke). If I do a third I'll prob do a male warrior. Anyway, I was stunned by the default female Hawke. Job well done.

I prefer Lady Hawke, but that's mostly because I'm a girl myself. Any time I get the option to play as a female character (particularly one that isn't automatically sexualized) I get pretty excited. Luckily that's become much more common these days than it was when I was younger.

From what I've seen of the videos I think both voice actors are pretty awesome, though. Male Hawke sometimes sounds a little weird to me, but I think that's partially because I got so used to listening to Hawke's female VA.

I like both. Femhawke's voice gets very emotionally when it needs to be. I really liked her voice during mama hawke tragedy.

Oh gosh, I fell in love with the voice acting in that quest. It was particularly impactful since I played a mostly sarcastic Hawke...hearing my normally devil-may-care heroine slowly breaking down the more she realized how much danger her mother was in really got to me. Both f!Hawke and Leandra's voice actors really knocked it out of the park for me in those scenes.

EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention that was interesting--my brother usually plays male characters, but after enjoying a run where he played a female Human Noble in DAO to marry Alistair, he discovered he actually enjoyed playing as a female hero in the DA games and tried out Lady Hawke, too. I haven't actually seen him play with the male version of Hawke yet.

I like 'em both. In ME I far and away prefer FemShep, but in this, I think the VO work is topnotch for both. I tend to play sarcastic/humorous, but I think FemHawke is best at aggressive, oddly.

I like the flippancy a lot, to me, that's the most badass, in a way, making fun of danger and important people.

I am torn between them... As a sarcastic/charming Hawke I would go for female, as the goodie-two-shoes I would go male.

I like male Hawke, the voice actor did a superb job with the Diplomatic and Aggressive options so that it sounds like a different person with the same voice!

Actually, I think both are great and a vast improvement over Jennifer Hale(over-dramatic) and Mark Meer(bored and robotic to someone).

However, I think Dude Hawke(Nick Boulton) has the edge. Some of his lines made me snicker(in the "hey, that's actually clever" way) a bit and I really, really preferred his snarkastic/agressive respones, where he is even capable of sounding heroic during some parts.
And he played Gerard de Ridefort in Arn: The Knight Templar, mah favourite crusader movie.:wizard:

Yeah! Arn was an awesome movie.  I found that my agressive male hawk sounded more "rude" than angry, wheras my femhawk was like "get to the point or get out of my way" she hit aggressive more naturally.  though the dude did sound like a hero in some instances, femhawk was more along the lines of " *sigh* hawk to the rescue.....again" compared to his "Of course i will help, im the champion of kirkwall" type phrases.

I think they're both done really well. So far, I've played one of each, and while I would tend to lean towards my female Hawke, I think it's probably because my male one was diplomatic and nice, and my female was hugely sarcastic.

When I think of Lady Hawke, I think of Merrill's line about how wonderful and beautiful she is, and "how can anyone not love her?" Merrill is so right.

Marian Hawke's delivery of the snark lines is vastly better than Garrett's. Male Hawke needed deadpan lines for his humorous choices, as he does deadpan amazingly well, but the lines don't fit the delivery.

I prefer lady Hawke, but I do like both genders some lines are delivered better than others.
But male Hawke is actually really good as well. Definitely fun to play as both.

I see no point in playing anything other than a female Hawke.
