The thing I like about Fist is that as you pump your Magic you get more stuns.

Are you sure about this? Then the 20% stun rate in the description is downright wrong. BioWare is known for incomplete/misleading in game descriptions though.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure about that. I'm pumping Magic on this mage too so it'll become moe obvious at higher levels.

This time around I have the DLC amulet that gives +10% damage to Fire/Cold. This mage won't be wearing chamion armor. I'll be looking to maximize elemental damage.

Chantry Robes (Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness)?

I may go Robes + Cold Blooded for purchased equipment.

I wish the cone spells for fire and electricity were in DA2 also. Such spells are more easily controlable. Flexibility of spells is important, especially when number of spells is small (as in DA2.)

I get the sense that they were trying to make the Mage AOE spells in DA2 to not only do different types of damage (vs. Enemies with mixed Immunities), but also have different effects/styles. The result is that for any given situation, only a small fraction of all your spells are optimal. This makes Mage play even more challenging and fun.

I'd still like more "close combat" type spells.

What Roxlimn is saying, and rightly so, is you simply are not using the spells you have efficiently.
If you want an honest tip, stop bringing the fight to the enemy and let them come to you.

For instance, your first mistake was to step through the door. The AI is thick as bricks in this game. They will run through rain, hail or shine just to target you. All you have to do is drop fire storm on the door and then step back. The AI has no choice but to run through it's AOE just to target you. The concussive effect disables them. This also includes Leech. When leech is visible just nuke him. You don't have to chase him down or anyone for that matter. Firestorm -> fist of the maker -> fireball -> etc, followed up by ranged staff attacks while your spells are in cooldown.

No, not stepping through the door would be a mistake. I remember playing the quest with my first mage.My whole party got wiped out with one spell that Leech cast through the door. Your mistake is you think you can use the same strategy regardless of what enemy you face. You can't.

The first time I played that scenario, I didn't even know Leech existed (this was on Hard). Merrill and Varric took care of business without my having to tell them to do anything special.

You should be able to take him out on Nightmare with Petrify + Shattering Arrow or Archer's Lance (careful with that) combined with a little ranged FF.

Sigh.. do I really need to find an earlier save to show you how badly leech gets raped doing exactly what I just stated?

Lol!!!! With my first mage I tried that and my whole party got wiped with one spell.

You can't just sit back and wait for blood mages to come to you. That is an idiotic "strategy." I'm sure that might replay and replay until he doesn't rape you with one spell or you might get lucky on a first play through and the AI might not cast the spell of course.

Sorry, one strategy simply does not work for all enemies.

I wouldn't expect much.  GOW was shown multiple vids of Throw and Pull working wonders in the ME2 forum and he still insists that they're useless.

Best of luck, though.  If you can make him see the light, it'll be all for the better.

WOT! Throw was epic! The collectors were almost always standing on ledges. Dropping their armor and then force pushing them off the ledge was a ridiculously easy way of killing them en mass :)

I now understand why Grumpy thinks mages are underpowered.

Sorry, I'm just not idiotic enough to believe hiding behind a doorway will keep blood mages from casting spells on you. Like I said, sometimes the AI will do idiotic things so you may be able to keep repeating the battle until the AI decides not to cast a spell. But anyone who has played the game should know the plane of a doorway does not stop spells.

Not true. You can throw stuff around once you shoot the protection off like a gimped soldier. But you are seriously off topic. This is a dragon age 2 board.

From your amazing vids, I have come to the conclusion that Mages are gimped and that Fireball does too little damage. It should do at least as much damage as Assassinate, to every target in its AoE.. This would be balanced by the fact that Fireball doesn't combo, is hellishly hard to aim, and is Fire-based, so most enemies would be immune to it anyway.

There is a lot of unneeded anger and conflict in this thread. I can understand getting irritated arguing with someone over numbers, but some of it is even from criticising how someone else plays their game. The point of the gameplay forum is to share how you play the game, so don't ridicule people for it.

What equipment were you wearing to get 589 damage on your cone of cold? Mine did 319 in that same battle and  I was using the DLC cold staff + the DLC amulet that gives +10% cold. Please start showing the difficulty level and equipment. I am intersted in how you doubled the damge I got.
