I felt like a better question, instead of why are we forced to pick a side, would be why doesn't our picking a side seem to matter? Throughout the 3rd act, not just at the end, you can side with the mages and they still act like they think you're against them, they attack you, turn into abominations and force you to kill them, etc. its absurd how little difference your decision makes. I like the idea of picking a side, I like the idea of feeling like my decision actually meant something even better :) .

I agree the story and your choices never really crystalise in the game. During the game you help Templars and mages and yet it has no effect on the others opinion of you. Kinda like the stupid friendship/rivaly meter. Except for the end battle it had little consequence and I don't undertsand why that was the end result just because we didn't go gung ho with NPC's in a particular direction.

I played both ending and became the Hero of the mages in both. I think the ending has more to do with Meredith's mind being poisoned by what you found in the Ancient Thaig. And maybe Orsino turning to Blood Magic.

You may not be interested in politics/war/dialectics, but politics/war/dialectics is interested in you.

One of my favorite phrases ever comes from Mass Effect 2:

"I am just a guy that points and shoots"

Why are forced into politics and petty squabbling between some psychotic broad and a pointy eared wizard wannabe?

Because you are part of society. You are a citizen of Kirkwall and you have just as many duties as you have rights. Most importantly, if you don't join either side then they will consider you their enemy and attack you. No matter what level you are, how many spells or abilities you've learned or how much DPS you make, role-playing wise you are just one mortal person. Orsino might ask you to help them, but Meredith demands that you aid them. You were named the Champion of Kirkwall. It is your responsability to protect the citizens of Kirkwall from the mages. If you say "screw it guys, i'm going home", your title will be stripped from you and you will be considered an apostate (if you are a mage) or an indirect collaborator.
