I want to quote Garrus about this metaphor going somewhere horrible, except it would be a lie, because this metaphor is going somewhere awesome.

EDIT: Also, onions on pizza are morally offensive and I demand that all pizza places immediately remove them from their topping options lest the Maker smote them with holy fire from His brick oven.

Mushrooms? You must be high. I cannot take your personal preferences seriously and I will argue that anybody who respects them is obviously siding with you because it is not possible to have an honest and respectful difference of opinion when it comes to toppings.

. . . the metaphor is making my head spin.

However, this has been fun. I got to talk about pizza AND classical literature. What a great thread. :P

Clearly, your sister isn't the kind of woman who text messages you with pictures of penises with mushroom-shaped warts on them.

And really, all the "everyone is bisexual" theme did was save the work of modders. That said, we need to see more definite homosexual relationships in DA. The only time you saw anything of the sort was PC-NPC. Where was the homosexual married couple? Where was the homosexual matchmaking? To be quite honest, DA has been very mild about that sort of thing. All married couples are heterosexuals, and the only matchmaking that's done NPC-NPC has been heterosexual.

If you're gonna' be the flagship of minority sexualities, you can't just half-ass as a sidethought bonus. Go all the way and reinforce the notion that it's common and no big deal in the world.

Actually, I think DOA and Awakening had a married homosexual couple.  At least I always thought of Herren and Wade as being a gay married couple who owned their own armor business.B)

Aw, my discursus on literary self-projection is buried on the previous page, and the new page has moved on to nightmare-inducing text messages.

What a world.

I'm sorry. But there's only one place a discussion can end up when sausages and mushrooms are juxtaposed.

[EDIT] And I did enjoy your "discursus on literary self-projection."

I deigned to electronically inscribe upon this forum a statement repsponding to yours utilizing much sesquipedalian loquaciousness, but unfortunately I was incapable at that moment of undertaking such a task.

Grandiloquence of this nature is almost quotidian in my field. It's very conservative and resistant to change, and (with few prominent 20th century exceptions, such as Dr. Holland or Dr. Brown) seems to ignore the fact that we're not living in the 19th century anymore. Well, I suppose bawdlerization is out of fashion and periodic style (thank goodness) is no longer de rigeur.

Anyway, I'm to bed. You may resume your regularly scheduled thread.

That is the BEST thing I've read today.  :)

An incredible array of euphamisms for gay men in there, I have to admit.

It's also an excellent point. I've said before that our telemetry shows more people using this content than many assume-- and the only interpretation to draw from it is that there are more gay players than anyone believes or many people who are not gay themselves are perfectly willing to roleplay it in a game.

Can the telemetry be broken down more?

Just for my own curiostiy rather than it being indicative of anything.

Whenever I read all the fuss about relationships in DA2 it is almost always leveled at the M/M relationships.

I very rarely see anything posted about the F/F relationships.

Not that anyone would suggest there is a double standard going on here.

Whoah, Whoah. Wait. If we're talking about pizza toppings, though, what about pineapple? Come on. If you hate Pineapple, the damned topping permeates the WHOLE BOX even if you get half non-pineapple. Picking it off doesn't help! The taste lingers there like some foul element added to corrupt the very nature of pizza. Plus. Anchovies. Just because you'll make me lose my appetite seeing them in front of me.

I think it's explainable why people will just pay for an extra pizza if they are in pineapple or anchovy loving company. *sulks* (I actually like just cheese. Does that make me horribly boring? >.>) The point is. Getting pineapple on pizza is like using blood magic, and anchovies are screwing up and summoning a demon.

That is completely uncalled for. For one thing, pineapples are awesome. So is blood magic. Secondly, neither of them lead inexorably to anchovies. It only happens that desperate people without a modicum of taste just HAPPEN to order pineapples and anchovies. Just because 99/100 people do so doesn't mean it has to happen every time.

Just kidding, I don't like pineapples on my pizza. Blood magic is still awesome, though.

edit: Is your name Greek? ὀνειρόπολος? A dream-reader?

::cries:: you don't understand! I grew up in a household with a father AND a brother who both always wanted ham and pineapple on their pizza. Do you know how often I looked longingly at left over pizza and had to resist because of the taint of pineapple still lingering even if removed?

Kirkwall is going to hell because the Tevinter's screwed around too much with blood magic, and the pizza was ruined the same way! There's no getting rid of blood magic once you've messed around with it, and there's no getting rid of that pineapple!

Edit: And Yep! :) It is Greek. It's a bit, you know, used for both a reader of dreamers or just a dreamer. It could be a title or just a normal person.

I'm now imagining pineapple as being the secret ingredient that makes the Grey Warden's Joining concoction work.

If so, I should be a Grey Warden by now.

At this point, I'll be somewhat off the current topic, but what the hell. I'm actually surprised Yahtzee not only did that, but he wrote about it. Before Yahtzee was a mildly cool dude in my book, after all he made 5 days a stranger (its an awesome game series). But after that, he's really gone up in my book.

Refreshing to see some positive feedback on DA2.

Sort of just like me, in that my character is not me -- (s)he's a different character, though (s)he may have differences from me. This sort of happened with my "canon" Hawke, Julian, and Fenris. It was similar feels that brought them together, and a caring that Julian felt for Fenris. (And like Yahtzee, I myself am not gay. I find women, not men, attractive...and I must admit, I find lesbians to be attractive as well, though that's probably normal for a guy). I've actually RPed slash, for a good friend of mine who really enjoys it, and while I don't really feel like I'm talented with it, I have no qualms against it for any gender, as characters are people just like you and me. Fantasy people, but there it is. ^^

My issue is that homosexuality is presented in a contemporary manner, along with many other world elements (such as the treatment of women). Origins claimed inspiration from George R R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. An adult fantasy which is socially accurate to the time period it reflects rather than being a soft contemporary adaptation. Dragon Age 2 however, is not adult fantasy, is not socially accurate to the time period it reflects and is as shamelessly contemporary as you can get. Apart from the whole mage and token slavery thing, people enjoy a level of equal rights that puts even today's society to shame. It's all very... inhuman.

It's a shame really. I can't imagine I am the only person in the world that enjoys playing an 'Éowyn' or 'Brienne of Tarth' style character (and who now can't). Similarly I think that a lot of people would leap at the chance to roleplay a 'coming out' story within a world such as dragon age. The Forbidden Fruit is all the sweeter, no?

Conflict is sweet, conflict is drama. Whilst I am for player's choice in removing set sexuality of companions, a person's sexuality is an integral part of their character. As a compromise, I'd suggest allowing the player to 'convert' a companion, or even be 'converted' themselves, through subtle dialogue and interaction. Through conflict.

I'd love to see the rule that says a fantasy world must reflect the societal attitudes of any given real-world society simply becuase they're at the same technological level.
