It depends on what you mean by bad. Yes, it does have an effect. In fact out of all the decisions you make in ME1, I think this is the most visible in ME2. It doesn't make the game any easier or harder though, or if it does it's so extremely marginal that it is unnoticable.joes3v wrote...

im more worried about ME3,ive put too much time and effort into the first 2 to restart

Well, about ME3 nobody can asnwer until it will be released 
About ME2, the citadel citizens will be more hostile towards the human race and Avina is even giving you a warning about humans should not travel alone on citadel. Apart from that I haven't noticed much more.
