Okay so I'm finally playing the game through as Fem Hawke, and the first thing that struck me was her movement.  It'squite honesly just ridiculous. Her hips are swaying back and forth with every step, and arms are at her sides with her hands dangling as she runs.  What's up with that? She looks like she's in a push to go to the bathroom!!!

And then there's Fem Hawke's size.   I'm sorry but she doesn't look like she could even hold a great sword, let alone swing it with any force and knock someone down with it.  Most of the weapons are bigger than she is!  All of the armors look so different on her, kind of like the way they looked on my Female Elven Warden in Origins.  Everything on her looked like it was made for a doll too.   The Armor of the Fallen (which looked great on my male Hawke) looks like a leather suit with straps and exposed shoulder pads.  The only armors that I've found for her that beef up her appearance is of course the Champion's armor, the Wall armor and it's many copies that I came up on later in the game.   But outside of those armors her physique is not in keeping with her character at all.  Just very very unconvincing as a warrior.

There's nothing intimidating about her at all, her height is average and unimpressive, her arms are twigs and her legs are sticks.  Now Bioware didn't have to make her into Ms Olympia, but they certainly could have given her a convincing enough physique that at least reflected the kind of  character class she was.

Lastly her voice.  Now I'm finding that playing Fem Hawke with all of the comedic lines works extremely well for her.  She sounds like a no nonsense smart ass who doesn't back down from anything.   But during those moments where it's required to be conciliatory or even hostile,  Hawke sounds too girlish.  Aveline fell a couple of times in battle and my Fem Hawk would yell out her name.  I would just start laughing.   Doesn't this woman have a warrior yell or even an angry scream?

After playing long enough you actually stop paying attention to these things, but at certain moments in the game it's forces you to notice.  Like her meetings with the Arishok and her confrontations with Meredith, during those moments she demonstrated an inability to project her voice with any kind of authority .  And it was during those moments where I couldn't take my Warrior Fem-Hawke seriously.

Really? Come on now, show me even one RPG that lets you play a human/elf/other "pretty" race where the females actually look like they could be believable warriors? For that matter you do realize that Aveline uses the same body model as femHawke or that the human body models have changed very little from DA:O?

edit: though I will concede that femHawke's run animation is awkward at best.

I don't believe I've ever seen a game where the warrior-type females look like they are strong enough to do whatever it is they are doing. I can't imagine that this will change, my guess is that the developers create these characters with visual appeal in mind above practicality. To me, that's fine.

The voice did get me, though. I think the voice actress was obviously very talented, no doubts about that. I just had such a hard time going from playing male Hawke to female Hawke...I felt so insubstantial and..sweet. =(

On that note (about female warrior physical appearance), I'm just glad Dragon Age female armor cover as much as male armor. Have you notice how much less game female character wearing compare to male characters? They exposing arm, shoulder, large torso area, thigh, chest...while their male counter part cover up from head to toe. I was playing DA 2 and I'm like, finally!!! I'm wearing practical clothing for once.

As for the animation, I think they're pretty cool, especially the battle animation, very flashy. Although I played mage twice, rogue once, so don't know about warrior. And the facial animation is pretty good too.

Considering how much bashing of Avelline there is because she actually looks like she could fight, are you really surprised? There'd be ten to a hundred times the ranting if your warrior woman was actually built like one.

Don't let Gaider catch you talking about how the "straight male demographic".

I never said straight, I said sexually frustrated. Besides they clearly have Varric for the catchers to dream about and Anders for the pitchers to have their way with. Image IPB

The women can have the castoffs Fenris and Sebastion.

I agree. I've tried playing as a female character but I just can't seem to take her seriously. Why won't you let me be a badass chick, BioWare? You've already made it clear that you support strong females in games. Take it a step further.

Though I must admit the VA's delivery of the sarcastic lines is mostly impeccable.

You act as though the men in this game look like they could handle the two-handers. I'd say only the qunari qualify.

I thought Aveline was convincing with her rooted posture and firm gaze and.. biceps. Could have been a bit taller though, with the way Merrill talked about her.

Hah, yeah you're probably right. Male Hawke looks like could handle a two-hander..but probably not the comically oversized ones that are so popular in Kirkwall.

It was only weird to me with warrior or rogue femHawke when I had both Bethany and Isabela in the party. All three use the same animations, so it was like watching triplets moving from a distance.

Well, I'd say one doesn't have to be a body-builder to have muscles, but then I remember that the guys pretty much are chiseled adonises when stripped naked.

Still, I've seen some guys in real life that would snap bodybuilders in half and they had pot-bellies.

Though the two-handers in DA2 are ridiculously large.

I sometimes wonder if much of the gaming community fits this stereotype. Both players and producers.

You're out to lunch, OP. I love the feminine walk and stance combined with an athletic body. She is certainly no waif. Maybe it's not realistic for her to be able to swing a greatsword, but no less unrealistic than it is for Fenris to do so.  Nor do I want some butch voice.  No thank you.

Is all this a plea for bigger boobs?

Geez, first people complain that FemShep walks too much like a man and now FemHawke's walk is too feminine. BioWare can't win. Image IPB

I can't stand the exaggerated hip sway. I think her body type looks good, and I love that there are no leather cheerleading outfits, but gah, she looks like she's going to throw out a hip with that run. And she looks like she has scoliosis when she's standing still.

Ah well, I did like the DAO female run. So maybe it's just me.

I liked FemHawke's size. I played a Beserker/Reaver/Vanguard/Two-handed FemHawke and her appearance as this tiny girl with a huge hammer/axe/sword zipping through combat eviscerating much larger foes in her path was a great joy to me.

However, her arm motion as she ran....that was weird to me. I didn't like it at all. It looks weird...maybe FemHawke had a stroke in Lothering once and it caused some serious and only situational nerve damage?

I didn't mind the run/ walk animations in Origins, either. I guess I'm not fussed.

Marian is SO not a waif! The elves are waifs. She's got muscle tone and she's fairly tall and has booty. I'd hate to see the characters y'all are wanting, except I think I've already seen them in other games- floating gigantic ****** and ass with a weapon.

And about the voice actors.

I honestly felt like they were two different characters, which considering being one gender or the other is a big difference for a character, seems appropriate.

As for performance, I think both actors did really well. I can't decide which I like more, which is nice. I thought Mark Meer did a meh job in ME1 (to the point that most of my ME1 characters were FemSheps) but he stepped his game up in ME2 and I like his voice more now.

Here, I like both of them. They have their weak spots and their strengths, some lines work better than others. I will say this, All That Remains is even sadder if you're playing FemHawke. She really gets into the horror and sadness in a way MaleHawke does not. I felt my heart break while we were approaching the warehouse and again as we found the sicko's Shrine.

It really pulled the heartstrings in a way MaleHawke's acting didn't. Perhaps because she's a she and I'm a man but I like to think it's because she's emoting actual and honest emotions. I'd be a freaking mess if that happened to my mother, MaleHawke is more reserved with his emotions (and outright bad in his delivery of 'My mom's dead' later on with Aveline, it's really nonchalant for such a terrible event).

So I like the voice actors for Hawke about the same. MaleHawke and FemHawke are, to me, two different characters and I found myself role-playing them very differently. This is completely different than how I role-played Commander Shepard (who I adore more than either Hawke). Shepard's gender really doesn't change how I see Shepard as a character.

I think this is another well done step towards making protagonists. That and the personality that changes over time.

I'm hard on BioWare when it comes to the overall story (and especially the final act) but again I must stress that character work in this game is fantastic. I just wish they were involved in a more engaging plotline.

I personally had no problem with warrior Lady Hawke. I normally play mage or rogue so when I finally played a warrior Lady Hawke I wasn't sure I'd like it but once I got past the prologue and into the game itself I really found myself enjoying and even believing Lady Hawke made a good warrior.
