Merrill is somewhat tolerable in the very beginning. Yet the moment you disagree with her, hell even question her, she throws a tantrum. I refused to give her that tool she needed to fix the mirror. And after seeing the ending to her quest on youtube I'd say that is the best decision to go with, since things don't go according to her plans (surprise, surprise).

And the bolded is different in Anders' case(or in the case of any other companion, really), how?

That was an impressive way to squirm Anders into one more thing.

Me too. Hoh!

But a game where you could what you want would be refreshing. Fallout 2 was pretty close to that.

I loved Merrill. D:

I loved pretty much all my companions, even Carver, after a while. Even though Carver a huge douche.

Anders... that's a different story. When I didn't want to distract the Divine for him, as it sounded suspicious to me, he accused me of not caring about mages, blah blah blah. Okay, dude, I AM A MAGE.

I wanted to massacre the village of primitive idiots who wanted me to go on a hilarious vision quest because they only just realised after a hundred years that, yes, having technology to survive in a radioactive wasteland is actually a good thing.
But I got a game over when I tried. :(

You don't care about mages unless you follow his specific agenda, don't you know.

I got that impression. ;)

And for some reason, your 'don't you know' reminded me of Sarah Palin. D:

If you're going to deny that Anders throws a tantrum when you disagree or question him, i'd like you to actually say it.  If you're not going to deny it, it's not exactly "squirming" him into one more thing.

Haha Merrill is just proof that as long as someone is good enough at batting their eyelashes and pouting and acting cute, people mostly guys would forgive them anything. If Anders switched causes with Merrill I bet people would be like Anders you're crazy! And Merrill is the cutest terrorist ever!

O, I like this game.

Anders is proof that as long as a dude has a tragic backstory and will exchange fluid with the PC, people (mostly girls) will forgive them anything. If Merrill switched causes with Anders, I bet people would be like "Merrill, you're crazy! And Anders is the most sexy historian ever!"

If you guys wanna rip on Anders, may I suggest checking out a youtube of superdouche Hawke letting Danarius take Fenris back?  I totally support most of his actions, including the Chantry, but that was just omgwtf.  Every other party member is horrified at Hawke, but Anders actually thinks it's funny.  Anders' entire thing is that you can't punish people for something you *think* they'll do, but that's exactly what he's doing with Fenris.

Eh, Maria makes trolling so sweet and forgivible. I'd just bluntly assume that girls hate Merrill and Morrigan and call them stupid teens because those characters are made for boyz. Can't now.

Anders is a pain in arse, you'll never see me deny that. But when Merrill goes on and on calling Hawke racist names and saying "I never want to see you again!" I couldn't help but think of a five year old kid spazzing out in a grocery store because his/her mom refuses to buy him/her candy.

I hated Morrigan until she said she considered me a sister. Then I was like "aaaww". Then she blackmailed a devil child out of Alistair and I hated her again.

Where am I going with this? Well... look! An elephant!

If Morrigan was fanservice for the guys, a fun night out for the Wives of Bioware must include sacrificing chickens.

ehm blackmailed? My female Warden always  persuaded Alistair to make a child with Morrigan: noone wants to die for sure...

And the child isnt devilish, that´s the trick at the whole thing ;) It´s just a rebooted God :D

Merrill reminded me of a really good friend of yours who happens to be addicted to heroin. You love your friend, you want to do what's best for them, but the whole time you're like, "Oh...no. This is very bad." So my Hawke was BFFs with Merrill because she was just so gosh-darn cute, but during her quests she very reluctantly helped her, wincing all the while (HAWKE IS AN ENABLER!)

When I had to slaughter all the Dalish though, that's where I drew the line. That fight was hard...

Ehm you didn´t have to slaughter them... The right answer, and they let you go.

Which just goes to show how psychotic the Dalish are.
Say the right thing (i.e. blame Merril for everything) and they let you go.
Dare to stand up for Merril or point out the obvious (the Keeper was an abomination) and they go kill-crazy to the last person. Even the shopkeepers. Even Arianni! "Hey I know you saved Feynriel and helped him master his powers but BLOODCRAZE DIEDIEDIE!".

This is what I get for playing without a guide the first time through--I think I said the keeper was an abomination. XD

But seriously, the slaughtering of a whole village--that's where I draw the line. After the slaughter, of course.

I am a vindictive and mean spirited person who loves to play the blame game.
I assure you that if Merril was at all at fault for the Dalish slaughter I'd be the first one smearing her name.

On my first play-through I found Merrill to be a sympathetic character even if she is a bit deluded. On my second play-through I was a mage-Hawke and found that I just couldn't stand her. She's so completely caught up in the stupid mirror which she's somehow gotten convinced is worth anything and everything to fix. I mean, she knows that it probably led to the death of Tamlen, she knows her keeper and clan can't stand her for what she's already done to try to fix it. I found I just couldn't sympathize with her giving in to the temptations of a demon in order to reclaim a piece of history. History shouldn't be that much more important than the now and what she could have been for her clan as future keeper. When you're so deluded that someone running to their death at the hands of a monster rather than even listen to you tell them to run the other way doesn't stop you in your tracks... she might as well be an abomination from that point forward.

I'm sorry, Pol is an idiot who runs to his death because of the scary tales the Keeper was feeding him, and MERRIL is deluded?
I just don't get this line of reasoning.

Well, the Keeper was almost certainly telling the clan that Merrill had become a blood mage and was under the tutelage of a demon.  Those being facts in evidence in the game and from Merrill herself, I don't find fault with the Keeper.  If Merrill was genuine in wanting to serve her clan then she should have accepted that they didn't want anything that blood magic / demon dealing was required to achieve.  My mage couldn't get past her eagerness to treat with demons just to bring back the elf-killing mirror.

She's a well written character who is easy to like for many parts of her personality.  But...  I just felt she was one step away from giving herself to a demon all to revive a history that her clan didn't even want.
