I'm sorry, Pol is an idiot who runs to his death because of the scary tales the Keeper was feeding him, and MERRIL is deluded?
I just don't get this line of reasoning.
You just refuse to see the reasoning cause you like her. Merrill claims all she is doing is for the good of her clan, and yet she does not even bother to think or even take in to consideration that even if she does succeed that she will not have a clan and god knows what kinda of demon she could have released and how many lives she would put at stake among her companions and in Kirkwill as well. Once you complete her last quest and keeper dies, SHE FINALLY admits that she was wrong, and her keeper loved her ( not my theroy but game facts) that she tried everything in her power to keep her safe even by paying with her own life. So still stands that MERRILL is a selfish, idiotic blood mage that needs to be put to death. Look at Isabela, she is a priate, thief and a ****, and yet she did what was good for everyone. She could have run with the book but she came back cause she cared and Merrill threw all that cared for her in to garbage.
I bet as someone already said if Anders was a pretty, sexy female lots of anti-Anders debats would be different.. Merrill is very cute and no one in game has such lovely voice as she does, but she is by far the most SELFISH b***h of all.

Excuse me? Merril waited for YEARS before risking another encounter with the demon. The clan should've been long gone, the Keeper kept them there.
And no, there are outcomes where Merril doesn't say she's wrong, and whether the Keeper loved her or not doesn't change that the Keeper went about things the wrong way.

The keeper taking in a Pride Demon to keep Merrill safe was about as doofus as Orsino going Harvester to prove that all mages don't do blood magic. The keeper wanted one last "told ya so" in before she bit it. Why the hell did she even keep the Dalish there in the first place? Is 7 years in the shadow of a demon and giant spider infested mountain really a good idea for the clan? That almost deserves a Darwin awardThe Angry One wrote...

Obviously everyone will form their own opinion of her character, but it isn't a huge stretch to see big faults in her actions. Either you forgive her those and like her anyway, or you hold it against her.
I wouldn't want someone who was that willing to put her friends and family at risk as a companion in real life - on in the game.

So the Keeper didn't want a member of her clan mucking about with demons and blood magic - that sounds pretty sane to me.
So she became an abomination herself? That solves the problem?
I don't doubt that she loved Merril, but I do say she went about things the wrong way.

You might criticise Merril for taking risks with a demon, but again, she put no one at risk. The risk was her own. Marethari was supposed to take the clan and leave. It's not Merril's fault they continually camped that place.

The keeper made a stupid move by taking in the demon. Merrill was prepared to die should the consultation with Mr. Pride go badly, yet the keeper, Who may i remind you is a critical member of the clan, and should have left sundermount years ago, decides to throw her life and pretty much the well being of the clan away for a lost cause. Merrill was no longer a member of the clan, love or no, the keeper had a responsibility to the clan as a whole, one she failedCyakura wrote...

It's not inevitable that Merrill's actions will lead to the destruction of her clan, and she certainly does not intend to destroy her clan. (Unlike Anders, who clearly does intend to destroy the Chantry.) Merrill doesn't intend even to become possessed ... and the keeper could definitely have been wrong about the danger, because, after all, Merrill travels with people who kill a demon every day before breakfast just to check their aim.
Merrill is doing this for the Dalish as keepers are taught to find and preserve Elven knowledge - her adopted clan seem to have become "hicks from the sticks" over the years.
I did get giggles at the thought of Merrill walking through Kirkwall <part III when they know shes a mage> and people jumping over walls and breaking their necks to get away from her - she would probably get the blame for that also

By "at risk" I mean that if something went wrong and she was possesed by the demon or lost herself to blood magic then all those around her could be hurt/killed/worse due to her actions. It's why blood magic and any dealings with demons are forbidden in the first place. Over time the risk that you'll finally cave in to the demon or lust for power grows. Sure, some few will always have the strength of will to resist and simply be very powerful forces for good. But that's a precious few in any game of power.
If the clan was supposed to be gone then there'd be no good in Merrill regaining a piece of elvhen history in isolation. If she's in the alienage those elves are just as much at risk as the clan would be. If she's in the fade with me, she'll turn on me...
I think it's good that her character was written such that this debate can happen. Reminds me of the Loghain chatter with people on both sides with valid points.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree over her character though. Because I still see her as just another obsessed character who stops being able to see the catastrophe around the corner.

I couldn't agree more no one forced the keeper to to take in the demon. She did it on her own. Heck the clan shouldn't of even still been there. If they had left long ago like they were suppose to have done than the clan and the keeper would still be alive. What were Marealith's reason for sticking around for so long? If anything Marealith is the one to blame for the destruction of the clan and her own death and not Merril.
