I think I liked Hard difficulty most.

Assassins can be controlled via threat, simply taunt after they stealth near them. It is not a random target. It has a set tactic that by design will go after the highest threat, then if that isn't possible, it will go after the nearest target.
Replace kiting with crowd control, saving with STAGGER, reloading with CCC and you have yourself 1 dead rogue.

They also absoultely do not always go after the nearest target. I've had them stealth past my entire party to get to someone on the other side even if they had no threat up to that point.
Dog and Aveline can usually absorb a couple of backstabs well enough to take an assassin down easily. The multiple assassin fights can be more tricky, yeah.If you think you can make it through Act 1 nightmare without having a single party memeber fall unconcious ever with just crowd control and, most laughably, stagger without having to resort to any kiting or frequently reloading simply because many fights are just dice rolls on if one of your party members will be one-shotted straight off the bat then I can say with absolute confidance that you've never actually done it. Even if you have all the CC in the world none of them are 100% guranteed against assassin so it's inevitable that, eventually, you'll burn your CC cooldowns before the rogue is dead and all it needs to do then is stealth to one-shot any mage or rogue in the party.

I don't know about that, I've found that they fairly reliably have a certain "range" around where they stealthed where they prefer to backstab someone within that range, unless one of my ranged characters really ticked them off with lots of damage.

Put some con on your party members and they won't be one shot. All my party members can survive at least one stab, that's for sure.
