No he wasn't.
I think you're mixing him up with Jowan or something.

But I think the point of the character would be lost if he was a companion. I think it's similar to the treatment the Gray Wardens got in this game. They're Outside of us and it makes them almost unknowable.
He exists to show us about the treatment of mages by the Qunari and how devoted the Qunari are to the Qun. To continue on would prove that the Qun can easily be ignored (even Tal-Vasoth seem to regret and despair at the fact that they're honorless). We learn much about the Qunari from this mission and the affect of watching him kill himself was 100 times more emotional than anything we could have done with him as a companion.
I believe there's always room for a Qunari companion to show us more about their people....but in this case we needed to see something as an outsider to truly grasp how they're perceived not how they're explained.

I handed him over. The Qunari can do whatever they want as long as they leave Kirkwall alone. If he wanted to be killed, then he was too far gone to bother with.JabbaDaHutt30 wrote...
I hope I'm not the only one who prefers to tell those qunari "suck it, I won't let you torture one of your own even if he agrees with it" and cap their asses.
Oh and I was also thinking he'd be a companion. Actually, the first time I did this, I made the mistake of mentioning I was a mage, and the Qunari attacked me immediately. It wasn't until the second time I saw this that I even knew the Sarabaas wanted to die by their hand... whoops.

Really? During that quest I was thinking, "Oh yes, oh yes, secret companion," but, you know what happened.
I found the end of that quest SO sad.
I'd really like that other Tal'Vashoth deserter guy, who can end up in The Hanged Man to be DLC questing content. He said something like "You can't hire me now, but I'm a mercenary." Maybe in the future.

He also names himself.
It's quite obvious he'll be back in DLC or DA3.

a female qunari companion would be nice. don't know about the romance doh.
Doubt we'll ever see female Qunaris, unless they're Tal'Vashoth :T

Oh you don't owe us anything?
Well, pretty please then?
Seriously though. I miss the heck out of Sten, and a Saarebas with their unique selection of spells and that hardcore attitude, that sounds like a working theme for some manly fanservice to me.

I wanted to give the poor man a hug so badly. What a mess. It's the kind of outcome that makes you kind of sad and happy at the same time and all you can really say is "well, I'm glad I was there".
"Well, I'm glad I was there, watching a man burn himself to death... It's moments like these that make me reflect on the human state of affairs and on life itself. Maybe i'll go for some vanilla ice cream, possibly with chocolate bits on it."

He did not want to die. He wanted to live by the Qun. There is a world of a difference.Icy Magebane wrote...

Female Tal-Vashoth mage please. A Qunari would just immolate herself
And yes. I support that. Just like I support a female Tal-Vashoth romance. Let me be Captain Kirk and show that poor woman what that thing is the humans call love
