Alrighty, I just finished Dragon Age 2 for the first time! I had to restart about 3-4 times due to bugs but I finally got there in the end.

And I just have one thing on my mind after that last battle - giant freggin' golden robot statues of doom (and lasers).

Now to get to the pointless point here - I do not think the giant robot of doom thing worked for the end boss of ME2, and I do not think they worked out well here either without an explanation. :>

So, please, move away from the giant robot evil coniving bronze metal robots of doom thing in later installments.

Thanks. :)

But how would they make it awesome without them? Lyrium Frostmourne alone isn't enough to sufficiently hot rod samurai up that final battle.

I didn't really have a problem with the giant magic robots. What I want to know is what were they infused with that allowed them to move, or in other words, were they a different kind of golem with a mortal soul infused into them, or some kind of demon anchor/prison or something else?

As its already been discussed and decided on in another thread, the red lyrium the idol was made of is the mood ooze from Ghostbusters 2. The giant statues are to compensate for the lack of a statue of liberty in Thedas.

Besides, the statues coming to life was best part of that fight, if you didn't like the statues, than I truly pity you. ;)

Conduit0, thank you for making me spray my drink all over my monitor. Now I'm wondering what would have happened if Hawke had just started singing Jackie Wilson songs........

I don't think they were golems in the since of the dwarf ones. Dwarven golems are alive and able to think for them selves, which is why they need a soul from a living person. The statues I think were more like puppets controlled directly by Meredith's will, or by the idol for that matter, it seemed like it might have a life of its own.

It's not that I didn't like them, they just seem to be getting into a a habit of end bosses being or including giant robots. The battle was fairly fun, if easy.

I just felt like saying this for fun because it totally took me by surprise, especially when the *cough* dragoons *cough* came hopping out trying to kill me.

I take that back, the best part of that fight is Meredith turning into the first piece of modern art I've ever liked.

I figured the chantry knows a secret process where they can call on the maker to activate all the statues thay stuff into the gallows to defend it during an invasion. I had to go over and kick the two largest ones - they stopped moving.

Wow those were ridiculous. Does anyone remember that Lara Croft movie where the giant, multiarmed Hindu-looking statue suddenly awoke and tried to kill Angelina Jolie? That's what the battle made me think of. I've also seen a Sinbad movie with the same thing, come to think of it (edit: minus Jolie of course :pinched:).

For me, a few of them kept teleporting back up to the pedestal on the wall and the companions that were helping me fight Meredith would just stand there looking at them for about 5-10 mins at least. :/

I thought it was a bit of a let down. It just seemed like a quick excuse for a boss summon. I think it would have been better if it were just you and Meredith fighting, either one on one or with your team. Although it did remind me a bit of Jason and the Argonauts.

I felt let down by the whole 'Idol Sword' thing in general. It just seemed like that one plot twist reduced her character for me. She was essentially reduced to someone who was somehow stupid enough to buy a random piece of loot from an untrustworthy dwarf trader. It was ridiculous. If it was shown that her madness was purely of her own doing then it would make her story stronger than what actually happened.

Reminded me a bit of Drakensang with those statues, hehe. I'm glad they decided to zerg you a bit instead of making a fight versus a cannon like the wraith or the arishok, where you need to use the same tactic no matter what class/gear you have - running arround and looking for opportunities to get a few hits in.

I think her madness being of her own doing actually makes less sense. Even taking the span of several years into account, a person doesn't usually go over the deepend without a trigger. So to have her go from what appeared to be stern but rational at the end of Act 2 to being coocoo for coco puffs by the end of Act 3 without a reason would have been just plain bad. Now I can agree that how they handled the idol was kind of lame. I think instead of the "what a twist!" scene with Meredith, it would have been better to have actually had scene showing her buying the idol from Bartrand.

Well I would say that Mages were the trigger, the pressures of power and such.  To me I got the impression that throughout the game she was becoming more dictatorial with her power and simply ramps it up in Act 3.  I don't really factor her appearance in Act 2 because we don't realy see much of her.  It's only in Act 3 where you really get to interact with Meredith and Orsino and the Mages vs Templar thing takes over.  I think the problem with the game is that they're simply on the periphary right up until the end.  It cuts out a a lot of time for their characters to develop fully.

To me it just seemed like a massive backstep to introduce any outside force and not have it as a progression of her own paranioa and need for control over the mages and the rest of Kirkwall.

Well I would like to think that part of the reason they use the idol is because the primeval thaig and the idol or something like it will play a larger role in the story some time in the future and they wanted to show the players just how dangerous this stuff is.

They were kind of in keeping with the whole 'World of Warcraft' look and feel the game reeked.

Well, the ending battle was fun, so gameplay-wise the statues are welcome.
As we don't know much about what the lyrium idol actually is, i'm also ok with it's power to animate the statues, though i hope we will get a proper explanation some day.
Meredith's insanity was for sure increased by the idol, but i think that the roots of it were always there. Even in act I her own templar recruits think it is possible that she kills the weak and soft of them. Even though it isn't true, she is clearly not entirely on the level-headed side. She is pretty paranoid all the time. So the idol was more of a catalyst for her madness, but not the cause.

Yes. The end boss of DA2 sucked.

Like. Hard.

Really. Hard. What the hell was Saren doing in DA2 anyway?

That wasn't a light saber.  It was clearly Soul Edge.
