Don't know if people have checked the article already, but here's the link to it if anyone is interested. Though someone would be, as the "gay discussion" on these forums has been pretty heated up.

Here.

For discussion value, do you agree/disagree? What are your thoughts on the matter?

I'd prefer you would read the article before posting, as that had nothing to do with the article.

So what was your question exactly, he was discussing the merits and insecurities of straight males, what are you getting at?

Aveline I assume, you can flirt with her, it just won't go anywhere. (she will kiss you, and ask what would have happened if they had gotten together).

I honestly don't get the big hubbub about the homosexual relationships.

Yes, they aren't implemented ideally (one Hawke fits all approach), but all things considered, it was done respectfully and most people -though obviously not all- agree. One step at a time, really.

Compared to the waves of enemies, glaring linearity of the main plot, and the recycled environments, it's definitely one of the less important issues with the game.

Personally, I don't like the emphasis Bioware has put onto romancing characters, homosexual or not, but if you don't want your character to gobble the man meat, there's always the option to say no.

It may a little in your face to some people, but I don't think it's an element that ruins games. At worst, I get a couple of gay companions in my game. At best, a community of people around the world feels emboldened and encouraged to be who they are. That's a fair trade.

I agree with most of his statements. I am also struck by seeing that most of the "oh noez, gayness" comes from men. I'm a straight female, and f/f (or m/m) does not interest me, personally, in the least. Whatever floats your boat, actually. I can't play a lesbian, because I am not able to keep my eyes (and my PC's hands) off the males.

However, I'm not in the slightest bit offended by Isabela's innuendo about "back-watching" and her subsequent proposition to femHawke. Acutally, I find it quite funny.

I have yet to find any thread where a straight female goes all out complaining about being hit on by a bi-female in a game.

I don't care a lot, but it is annoying that it does seem you only have two choices with the homosexual love interests : Act like a jerk or get into a relationship...whatever happened to the bromance ? I guess I'm just too nice a guy to qualify as straight :)

Interesting read, thanks for the link OP.

He brings up a lot of good points and I found myself nodding along. BioWare did a great thing when they made every LI available for anyone and it's great that it gets some positive press. I hope they continue doing this in the future.

She will, but you need to avoid flirting with her after Donnic have taken her into her office.

So flirt with her through out, and then after Donnic takes command, just be kind and nice, and reload a few times if you need be (only one out of three options leads to the kiss, and if you flirt with her in her office after the copulation not even one).

I believe its instead of her just saying thanks for helping her with Donnic, but don't remember.

But he made basically the same point in the article--

And it's easy enough to simply not pursue any
saucy flirts with anyone you're not into. Are there men so insecure that
they're offended by fictional gay men coming onto their fictional
avatars? Surely at worst it's just a nice compliment and you can then
politely set them straight, if that's not an unfortunate choice of
words.

Or did you not read it?

Nicely written and fully congruent with my views although I did not pursue a gay romance with Anders.

Anyone who has an issue with the Anders gay come on has probably got some homophobia and you know what they say about that...

With Fenris you actually have to flirt to start the romance, and with Anders I believe its either avoid the diplomatic option before, or pick the diplomatic - dunno really, and it won't come up.

& even if you have to turn Anders down, its only a small rivalry score, one easily mended later.

Besides Rivalry is harder to get to a 100% without being a total jerk, so you should rejoice in it (Rivalry really is a more worthwhile path with most characters).

It's also really what irks me most about this; with Anders you have a 66% chance (bad math, yes) of being flirted with, a flirt you can easily just say no to. That's it for male/male flirting aside from you having the option in the dialogue wheel ~ and if that offends people, I don't get it.

Guess my reading comprehension is weak then. In my opinion the article was more about gay characters in games and about roleplaying them etc. etc., and not about the "Oh noez! Anders raped me!"- controversy or people that are offended by gay characters, in which the "Just press no" is very closely related to on these forums.

No need to jump at me.

Okay, I apologize for that, that was unnecessary.

In any case, I agree with what Yahtzee is saying there.

Actually that is the difference between men and boys, Men do not worry about it and go about thier bussiness, boys get all squeemish and twitchy. It is like the other day i was shooting with a buddy i am in my mid 40s and he is late 30s, and in pops this kid and i mean kid, noisey chatty little mag pie so as i am hunting the specials i have to have some silence to track them. It is damn near impossible with the kid's mouth going 8 miles a minute, so i pop off with a Mr. Kotter/Horseshack comment, and the kid asked who is that. I started laughing and said something to the effect kids heavy with sarcasm, well magpie got all offended and popped off with how do you know i am a kid, aside from the obvious i replied it is because you got pissed when called a kid. That is how i knew. I am 45 and if someone calls me kid you wil get my attention not because i am mad lol but because you have to be up there pretty good to get away with that if your reffering to my 45 year old ass.

boys will get twitchy about homosexuality (being as they are still insecure in lots of ways not just sexual identity) men will ignore it for the most part as irrelevant. Age is irrelevant as a measure of maturity. Call a child kid and they will get mad call me a kid and i will laugh or in the case of the lady at the grocery store who cards me everytime i buy beer, she brings a smile to my face.

No matter what anyone writes, in my eyes Anders was butchered as a character. Makes it hard to feel anything but disgust for an abomination from my point of view...but thats another kettle of fish.

Regardless, the whole sexuality debate is very interesting. For search of a better word. I totally support BioWare and Gaider in this regard (although a nicer let down option for Anders would be nice)...but I can still understand why some people would feel awkward with it.

It's a tricky one, because there is no right way to handle it. Because you're going to tell one side of the fence they're wrong, or going to annoy both sides. At least though it is now an open and passionate discussion. This is better than watching another few years of the games industry dance around issues of sexuality awkwardly.

who is going to call a 45 year old a kid? it means being in a position where you're much less likely not to be offended by something. just like calling a tall man short, or a strong person weak... you're in a position where you're inherently less likely to get offended.
