Currently at level 12 and on the first mission on Feros.
If I try and do every side-quest, and attentively listen to all dialogue/investigations ast hey deserve, how much more gameplay do I have left?
I know people have given me varying numbers of hours just for the main quest, but I want to relish the experience and take my time, so wondered how much of the game is left if I plan to explore absolutely everywhere.

It varies like you said. Expect around 50hrs in total though if you plan to do everything and talk to everyone I think the last time I played through I got to level 57. Then had to play again to get the achievement for the 60lvl character

Have you done Therum yet? If so you have less than 30 hours left, if not, about 32 hours. Also, I would not recommend doing the collection assignments, they add an extra 10 hours to the game and net you very little. I found that on my speed completion runs, take about 20 hours, that's going quickly through dialogs and ignoring the collection assignments.

Just fired ME1 up again on Friday. Love this game. :)

I've got quite a bit of experience with it already so things will go faster for me. I'm 13 hrs in after fetching Liara and doing almost all side quests available at this stage of the game ( which is most of them, I believe) I tend to finish all quests except the scanning ones that involve finding the Matriarchs writings, etc. So my run should be about 25-30 hrs. But again, I'm very familiar with the game.

Okay, I've completed Feros, Noveria, found Liara and currently on Virmire and I'm level 30.
I've done some of the Citadel quests and explored a few other worlds, but haven't really explored much else.

I'm finding that levelling is happening incredibly quickly. Sometimes I don't even notice the 'ping' and miss out advancing a level, only to advance several levels at once later on.

My new question then is am I able to complete Virmire and then go off and explore for a bit?

I don't want to push the limits of the level cap before I complete the main quest, which I assume isn't far off given my current level.

I'm confused here, and have heard different things regarding the level cap. Some people said that the ME1 game has a max level of 50, others say level 60.

All I need answering is, will I be able to do every mission and assignment in the game without hitting the maximum level cap? I don't want to be doing assignments when there is no XP reward in it for me (shallow I know.)

Imperium Alpha - You say that the level cap is 50-57. Do you mean that's what level I will reach if I do every quest? Thus, if the max level is 50, I will probably be doing several quests and getting no XP for it?

Apologies for the confusion.

Ok the level cap the first time you play is 50. The second and later times through the level cap is raised to 60. If you are doing, your very first playthrough it's possible to hit 50. If you're doing a second playthrough with the same character you might make it to 60. If it's not your very first playthrough and you're playing a new character about the best you can do without exploits is 57 to 58.

Basically it takes two playthroughs to get to 60.

The first playthrough has a cap of 50 and that's somewhat hard to reach requiring pretty comprehensive play. Later playthroughs have the cap raised to 60 and some of the earnable achievements give an experience bonus. With all the bonuses in place, it's typical to hit level 56-57 on a fairly comprehenisve playthrough if you try to maximise experience (for example, never fighting in the Mako and killing everything on foot).

You can "replay" the same character by starting a new game and "Select existing ID".

Cool - makes sense now.
Apologies if my initial question wasn't clear.
Thanks to all.

OP - visiting the planet called Ilos triggers the endgame. Make sure you have done all the quests you want to before you go there.

50 hours? How did you get that idea? My Dragon Age Origins playthrough doing every single thing only got up to 48.5 hours... O_O
