Even before release, I told Mike Laidlaw that the star ratings would be useless unless they showed us the formula used to generate them. He disagreed.

I was right.

Would it really kill them to release the formula? Or the source for the other scripts?

I generally dislike how much seems to be hidden this time around. no script source files, no toolset, I can't say that I understand why they would make a game so moddable, and then hide all the details and not release the tools to do the modding. Mike Laidlaw said himself that the tools they used to create stuff was a modified version of the DA:O toolset..... well... why not release it then?

(TBH, my guess is they incorporated third party tools they don't have permission to distribute)

No, it's a "Can we devote resources to this" issue.

The only reason the toolset was available at Origins' launch was because they had six months to prepare it for public release after the game had been finished. The PC release was delayed so they could do a simultaneous launch.

They've said many times that they want to release an update to the toolset. I believe that they will, but it will be a while, because these things take time.

In DA2 apparently the star rating next to an item tells you how good an item is if you are too simple to work this out for yourself, however I find myself looking at three belts that give 3% Physical Damage, one has three stars, one two stars and the last no stars, surely they are all the same?.

Does this apply to any other items and does this system actually work?.

The system doesn't work so well with items that do not have a "base value" (armor, damage) that scales (belts, rings, amulets)

Yep. Inventory management is so much easier in this game.

The star rating system didn't work very well at all. The system wasn't thought out very well.

The star system functions, I believe, as intended, but it's mis-represented as meaning "how well this will work for a given character," rather than "how close this item is to being level-appropriate."

It's not an important feature in the first place, though, so I don't see what the big deal is. If you care enough to challenge yourself with the game, you'd need to understand the mechanics and evaluate each item independently in the first place. If you're playing on the lower difficulties, you'll be fine regardless of what you equip.

It seems to me that this "star rating" was really unnecessary and redundant: why do you need stars to judge if an item is good for you or not, when you have all the statistics written clearly in its description?
I noticed too that some star ratings are quite strange and not 100% reliable.
