Merrill as a "tank"?

I have been trying to use Merrill as a quasi-tank in an 3 mages plus one rogue party, because I thought that between Rock Armor, Arcane Shield, Wrath of the Elvhen and Ensnare plus the ability to create threat with her high damage potential, this could be feasible.

However, I just can't get her to throw herself into close or even medium range. I set her tactics to tank, but she still stays at long range, firing at enemies from there. I also tried the "aggressive" setting, but that didn't work out either. Is there any way to make her seek out enemies, instead of keeping her distance, without manually controlling her?

Cheers
M.

She stays at a distance because her default attack with a staff is a ranged attack.

Apart from micro managing I think your only solution is to equip her with a melee weapon.
There seem to be a few weapons with only attributes restriction not class restrictions to equip. I've never tried it but it would be interesting to see if this can work.
I also can't account for any of these items; you need to do a little research if you're up for it.

Damn, that's what I was afraid of...

I read about those weapons, namely "Void Hammer", but it seems that they introduce several glitches/exploits like reducing the cooldown for certain spells to zero that make me not want to use them.

It's a shame that there seems to be no tactical setting like "if enemy is at long or medium range go to close range" or something like that. :\\

Anyway, thanks for your quick reply! :)

What about loading up on AoE damage spells and letting the enemies come to her? Or is she actively running away?

I haven't tested this extensively yet but it seemed to me.that she is trying to keep her distance, i.e. running away when enemies come to close. But that's definitely something worth exploring more with different tactic settings.

Don't rely on her tactics, then. Run her into the fight.

I have never seen her running away, so once she is in the mob, she should stay there. Maybe it would help to make some tactic like "enemies clustered->use cone of cold" (or another close combat spell) a top priority?

True, I don't recall actually ever seeing her flee a fight once she's all beefed up and running a full set of sustains.

(And I really hope that they don't patch away the ability to run more than 100% total sustains.)

I remember seeing her "flee" once, i.e. getting some distance between herself and the enemy and then firing again, but I might be wrong, or it might have been from before I switched her tatics from "ranged" to "tank" (I presume the latter). Will have to test this next time.

I finished an NM game with Merril, Anders, Varric/Sebestian, Archer-Hawke. Merril was activly controlled and act as tank. All other party members handled by the AI and Merril was very fine in this unusual role.

Sorry for bump, but just occured to me that you can get a rogue to do
"somone under melle attack
Merrill  Goad"
to get enemeis to pile into merrill.
