Why do the qunari paint themselves?

Such decoration seems out of character for such a highly utilitarian culture.

Perhaps it has some religious or spiritual purpose?
According to the codex article "Tal-Vashoth" by Brother Genitivi, "Vashoth", the name for qunari who leave the Qun, literally means "gray ones". Gray seems to be the predominant skin color for the horned "qunari-race" or the kossith.

I would assume this means that all qunari paint themselves, only stopping the practice if they leave the Qun, thus "becoming" a "gray one". It seems strange that the Qunari vilify their natural skin tone so, are they self-loathers?

Tal-Vashoth, or "the true gray ones", are said to "revel in chaos". Do qunari believe that the natural state of life is chaos?

Probably so they can indentify rank. And Qunari believes that life without the Qun is chaos (so yeah).
