This tutorial will explain how to swap your custom character's hair, beard and/or tattoo with hairstyles/beard/tattoos you can't get in the in-game character creator.

This has gotten way too clustered so if you want to check some proof screens, here they are:
- Custom Male Hawke with Iconic hear and Bloodsmear
- Custom Male with Iconic hear
- Custom Female with Iconic hair

Last edit 2/15/13: Updated older PyGFF link.
--------------------------------------------------------
Programs you'll need:
- Modio
- wxPirs
- PyGFF (latest version)
- PyGFF (older version)
- XVI42
- Dragon Age Checksum Fix
- Horizon

You'll find wxPirs and DA Checksum Fix HERE. Google the rest.
I suggest reading RX_Sean_XI's thread too.

--------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
- ALWAYS backup your save before attempting any kind of modification.
- These modifications will not revert unless you use the Black Emporium's mirror (so don't use it, or use it before editing Hawke's appearance via save-editing)
- Save editting is technically against Xbox Live's rules. The chances of you getting banned because of it are extremely slim however. Use at your own risk!

--------------------------------------------------------

Male Iconic hair

  • Method 1
1) Create a new male character (unless you have one who has the haircut shown in the screen below), and choose this hair:

Posted Image

2) Save your game on a USB drive.

3) Use Modio to extract your save (M > Explore my Device > File > Open/Close Drive, then look for your save and choose to extract it). Back it up.

4) Use wxPirs to extract "Savegame.das" and "Savegame.das.x".

5) Open "Savegame.das" in GFFeditor. Look for "SAVEGAME_PLAYER_MORPH" under Savegame_Playerchar > Savegame_Playerchar_Char.

6) Right-click the text box in the left corner and hit "Export to file". Name that file whatever you want.

7) Open that file in XVI32. Look for "art\\characters\\playercharacter\\humanmale\\hm_har_blda" on the right part of the screen.

Posted Image

Replace " b l d a " with " i c h m ". Mind the blank spaces! DO NOT ADD OR SUBSTRACT ANY CHARACTER! Just replace what's already there.
Now this is why you must pick the haircut mentioned above. The other hair cuts are named  something like "hm_har_ha01a", which is one character longer that "ichm". My very limited knowledge on hex editting doesn't allow me to hex edit those.

Save.

8) Back in GFFeditor, delete the SAVEGAME_PLAYER_MORPH (just hit Del). Right-click in the now empty text field, click "Import from file".

Posted Image

Choose the file you just edited in XVI32.
GFFeditor will ask whether you want to compress the data or not. Choose NO.

Don't forget to hit the Save button! (The one next to Reset).

9) Save your edited savegame.

10) Use DA Checksum Fix to fix your savegame.das.x (Click resign, select savegame.das first, then Savegame.das.x, and you're done).

11) Use Horizon to replace savegame.das and savegame.das.x in your 360 save (Tools > Package Manager > Open your 360 save > Contents, then right-click savegame.das, replace it with your edited savegame.das, and do the same with savegame.das.x).
Save, rehash, resign.

12) Use Modio to replace the save on your USB drive with the edited one.

13) Load the save in-game.

14) ENJOY!

  • Method 2
Use this method for a character you've already created. The hairstyle you picked doesn't matter.
Courtesy of sproksha.

Follow the same steps as above, and in step 7, instead of opening the morph in XVI32, open it with THIS version of pyGFF (the older one).

Under MORPH_PARTS, click on 2, and replace the gibberish in the text field with this:
愀爀琀尀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀猀尀瀀氀愀礀攀爀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀尀栀甀洀愀渀洀愀氀攀尀栀洀开栀愀爀开椀挀栀洀

Posted Image

Don't forget to hit the save button, and to save your edited morph of course.

Then follow the 1st method steps from the 8th one.

--------------------------------------------------------

Other male hairstyles

Use the 2nd method described above to swap your character's current hairstyle with one of the following hair:

- Anders:

- Alternate Anders (it's used in an alternate Anders morph that's -thankfully- never used in-game):

愀爀琀尀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀猀尀瀀氀愀礀攀爀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀尀栀甀洀愀渀洀愀氀攀尀栀洀开栀愀爀开愀渀搀愀

- Carver (near identical to one of the hair you can choose in the CC):

愀爀琀尀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀猀尀瀀氀愀礀攀爀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀尀栀甀洀愀渀洀愀氀攀尀栀洀开栀愀爀开挀愀爀瘀

- Sebastian (thanks to sproksha!):

愀爀琀尀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀猀尀瀀氀愀礀攀爀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀尀栀甀洀愀渀洀愀氀攀尀栀洀开栀愀爀开瘀愀攀氀

--------------------------------------------------------

Female Iconic hairstyle

This will work on an already created character, no matter the hairstyle you picked (expect bald).

1) Save your game on a USB drive.

2) Use Modio to extract your save (M > Explore my Device > File > Open/Close Drive, then look for your save and choose to extract it). Back it up.

3) Use wxPirs to extract "Savegame.das" and "Savegame.das.x".

4) Open "Savegame.das" in GFFeditor. Look for "SAVEGAME_PLAYER_MORPH" under Savegame_Playerchar > Savegame_Playerchar_Char.

5) Right-click the text box in the left corner and hit "Export to file". Name that file whatever you want.

6) Open that file in XVI32. Look for "art\\characters\\playercharacter\\humanmale\\hm_har_hh1a" on the right part of the screen. The "hh1a" part varies depending on your character's current hairstyle.

Posted Image

Replace " h h 1 a " (in this example ; in any case, replace the four letters after hf_har_) with " i c o n ". Mind the blank spaces! DO NOT ADD OR SUBSTRACT ANY CHARACTER! Just replace what's already there.

Posted Image

Save your edited morph.

8) Back in GFFeditor, delete the SAVEGAME_PLAYER_MORPH (just hit Del). Right-click in the now empty text field, click "Import from file".

14) ENJOY!

Replace the four letters corresponding to the hairstyle your character currently has ( " h h 1 a " in this example) with:

- Aveline:

a v e a *
a v e l

- Meredith:

m e r e

- Isabela (red bandana):

i s a b *

- Zombie mother (with a tiara ; it's kind of cute, if you manage to forget what it's used for ingame :P):

z b m a *
z b m b
z m b c

* Those are the ones I tested. The other ones should work, too.

Save your edited morph.

8) Back in GFFeditor, delete the SAVEGAME_PLAYER_MORPH (just hit Del). Right-click in the now empty text field, click "Import from file".

  • Morrigan and Isabela
Follow the same steps as above, and in step 7, instead of opening the morph in XVI32, open it with THIS version of pyGFF (the older one).

Under MORPH_PARTS, click on 2, and replace the gibberish in the text field with:

愀爀琀尀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀猀尀瀀氀愀礀攀爀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀尀栀甀洀愀渀昀攀洀愀氀攀尀栀昀开栀愀爀开洀漀爀

Hit the Save button, save your edited morph, and proceed with Step 8.

Bloodsmear and Freckles

This one gave me one hell of a headache, but I'll try to make it simple for you :P
This wouldn't have been possible without sproksha's awesomeness, so big thanks to you!!!

1) You need an awesome older version of GFFeditor: HERE. The current version doesn't read 360's morphs for some reason.

2) You also need to have or create a character with a tattoo. Make sure to pick the red color option for it, otherwise the bloodsmear won't be... well... a blood smear.
For best results, lower the intensity from 100% to about 50-75%.

Edit: It seems that the tattoo you pick matters... To get the bloodsmear, pick this tattoo or the 1st one:

Posted Image

Picking another one will actually get you other tattoos. sproksha figured out which tattoo turns into what after being edited:

1 - Bloodsmear
2 - Freckles!!!
3 and 4 - Dalish tattoo with 3 dots on the forehead.
5 - Bloodsmear again
6 - Freckles again
7 - Same as 3 and 4
8 - Merrill's tattoo

If you want the freckles, I suggest picking brown as the color of the tattoo. Unless you want red freckles :D

3) Export the character's morph (read above for instructions).

4) Open that morph in the awesome version of GFFeditor.

5) In the search bar, search for: 洀洀氀开琀吀愀琀琀漀漀䴀愀猀欀
Crazy, I know.

Crazier, I know.

Hit the Save button.
Save your morph, import it in your savegame, resign with Checksum, replace the files with Horizon, place it on the USB drive with Modio, load in game, and ENJOY!

Iconic Beard

Courtesy of sproksha.

You need a male character (obviously) who has a beard.

Follow the same steps used for the 2nd method for getting the default male hair.

In the older version of pyGFF, under MORPH_PARTS, click on 3 and replace what's in the text field with:
愀爀琀尀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀猀尀瀀氀愀礀攀爀挀栀愀爀愀挀琀攀爀尀栀甀洀愀渀洀愀氀攀尀栀洀开戀爀搀开椀挀栀洀

Posted Image

Don't forget to hit the Save button!
Save the edited morph then import it in your savegame.

There's no way to edit saves on PS3? :/

I still don't understand why they locked those haircuts in the first place.

To be honest... I'm not even sure you can copy the DA II gamesaves from the PS3, let alone edit their saves. But from what I know, it's not possible. :(

Also, if you'd like me to add how to get the other haircuts (Anders, Isabella, Meredith, Aveline's seem to be possible to get), the iconic beard, other makeup colors, other skin tones and tattoos, let me know.

Please and thank you.

Hey SelphieSK, i saw in another post of yours that these morphs reset every time you enter your home, is that true? If so, and if there is no way around it, should i even bother modding it?

All of your steps have worked perfectly for me so far by the way, thanks!

This is awesome. Is there a method to get the default male Hawke's beard?

No, it's giving the PC an NPC morph (by adding a morph name in
SAVEGAME_APPEARANCE_MORPH_NAME) that reverts back to the original morph
when you enter the estate.
None of these modifications will reset when you go back to your home, I've tested it :)

Glad to know it's helpful! ^^

Just a quick heads up:

Does this violate Microsoft's laws or do you simply copy a savegame onto an USB-drive and modify it on PC? (Or simply put: is this an alternative to jailbreaking the console?)

And second question: Would it be possible to use this method to simply change the default head eyecolour or hair/skincolour?

The 360 allows you to copy your savegames to a USB drive, you're not "jailbreaking" anything in the process.
Save editing can get you banned (temporarly) and your gamerscore cleared if you use it to get too many achievements in too little time.

And second question: Would it be possible to use this method to simply change the default head eyecolour or hair/skincolour?

I think so, since the default also has a player morph. I'll look into it.

EDIT: Yup, you can change the default's Hawke eye/skin/hair/stubble/tattoo color, you can even change his haircut, complexion or beard if you want.
He looks absolutely terrible in blonde, I tell you :D
It's just a matter of editing his/her morph in XVI32 and replacing the colors/features with what you want.
By the way, all the pathnames are HERE.

Thank you very much for the quick answer and the pathnames! I'm going to try that out next time I get to play :) (If it isn't too different with a PS3-savegame... which I hope it isn't)

All you are doing is copying a save over to the PC and modifying that save, but it still qualifies as "Tampering" in Microsoft's Xbox Live TOS.

The good news is that this has been going on for a few years, and no one has every really been banned (although it's happened once, but it was a multiplayer game). Microsoft doesn't seem to care that much since people who edit saves are doing so in 95% single-player games. Even when done to games with online gameplay, most of those titles are just co-op (popular ones are Resident Evil 5 & Crackdown 2). The main reason why it's not that big of a problem for online gameplay is that nearly all competitive multiplayer games store their rankings, unlocks, etc. on their own server, rather than your console, so there is really no "save" to modify in order to cheat.

There's always the risk, though, of "hey, we warned you. Now you have to pay the price," even though that risk is incredibly, INCREDIBLY LOW, it's still there.....but the only time I've seen or heard about someone get into trouble over this was because they were allowing themselves to unlock several Achievements immediately, and that was caught by the Xbox Live Enforcement Team.
