So, who would prefer a happy ending to ME3?

And a mandatory "oh sh*t" ending for if you suck at the game: Reapers win, everyone dies.

Well, no one knows yet what the ending of ME3 will be. The game isn't out yet. This is more of a hypothetical "what do you want" sort of thread.

I'm good with an "oh sh**" ending as long as it's something like "Critical Mission Failure" to go with it. That is, "Earth got wasted. Therefore you lost."

Having humanity reduced to a useless rump would punish renegade and reward paragons, since now paragons can become pets to their Turian masters.
No, the only difference we might see in the end is how we defeat the Reapers. Renegades might see the galactic fleet hold back but then Cerberus leaps up to save humanity. Paragons might see the aliens swoop in and save us. But my firm prediction is that we will get a mostly happy ending, although there might be a fail ending too, which would be cool.

But I definitely want a bittersweet, if not devastating, option for my other sheps.
The more ending possibilities the better, if you ask me.

One thing to keep in mind with the ending: Bioware will not punish either paragon or renegade. Paragon is all for big group hugs between humans and the rest of the galaxy. Renegade is all about humanity standing alone - can't trust the bug-eyed aliens!

ME2 did include an "epic fail" ending (Shepard dies), so you're probably on to something there.

Normally I would agree, but this would present something of a problem for the writers. Bioware has indicated that they want to do other content in the ME universe. This is going to pose a problem if the endings that aren't "Critical Mission Failure" vary widely. It's going to be tough to expand the ME universe post ME3 in novels, for example, if some people had Earth get exterminated, or a major race like the Turians got exterminated, but other players saved both.
I think we're going to have a canonized ending of some sort, it'll just be that paragons and renegades will have rather different paths to getting there. To that end, I expect the canonized ending to be one of three types: 1) The Reapers Won and Everyone Died, 2) We beat the Reapers and saved Earth, or 3) We beat the Reapers but humanity was exterminated,or close to it.
Ending 1 kind of cuts off future ME-verse content so I don't see it happening. I think it will be 2 or 3. My sig line indicates my preferences on the matter.

Or all the spin-offs could be historical. i.e. Rachni Wars, Morning War, Krogan Rebellion, First Contact War, etc.jamesp81 wrote...

Bioware set themselves up with a hell of a history to work with for future games.

That's possible, but I don't see it. Every time someone writes stuff in a way that it cuts them off from doing content that takes place in the future of the universe, there is inevitably a massive retcon when they regret that choice (which they always do). Might as well just rig things to avoid the retcon from the get-go.

The galaxy as a whole? The Reapers? Humanity? Geth/Quarian? The Racchni? Or most importantly of all, my increasingly confusing Liara/Tali/Kelly love quadruple?
Personally, I'd like to see a very long ending. If I have one criticism of ME1 and ME2 its that the endings havent really been endings as such, they have been short and didnt tell you anything. Given ME3 will probably bring this trilogy to a close, it should be epic and should tie up all the loose ends. its about time we saw how all those choices we made worked out, and what impact my Shepherd has had.
So it would have closure for the galaxy vs reaper conflict (with various degrees of success) and other various conflicts, and a series of epilogues/cut scenes you could unlock for the people you know and the characters you met, and how your decisions impacted them. Each of these should have a range of good/bad endings depending on your actions.
For example, if you romanced Tali and won the war, you could end with you and her building a home on the homeworld, or something.
Just my two cents.

I think all of that is a good idea. When I made the thread, I was thinking in terms of the galaxy vs reapers and the condition of humanity after the war was over. I'd consider Earth being completely depopulated a rather depressing end.

+1. I want the full-on happy ending I've busted my Paragon butt for (little blue children for Hiro and Liara, no home worlds lost, all the not-psychotic governments mostly getting along), dang it, but there should be at least one where Shepard becomes Tyrant of the Galaxy, one where the Reapers are only beaten at the cost of half the galaxy, and of course at least one good cinematic for the "fail" ending of "Reapers fall, everybody dies." But maybe that's just me.Locutus_of_BORG wrote...

Whatever the ending will be, there can't be an ending where "Yay! The Reapers are defeated and now the universe is back to normal again!" There needs to be severe consequences because of this war, whether it's casualties or the destruction of many systems in our galaxy (For example, we might have to destroy mass relays to kill Reapers if it comes to that, and in the process eliminate complete solar systems in our galaxy, just like what happened at the end of Arrival).

Yes, there can be ending where everything goes back to "normal" if the writers decree it. With that said, I'm not seeing that happening. I said a "happy ending" not a "now we continue like nothing happened" ending.
I always thought the ideal ending was all races homeworlds survive (but are severely roughed up), huge losses to all fleets. It would make a nice backdrop for another game or novel where the setting is everyone rebuilding their colonies, but with lawless bastards from the Terminus making it a problem. Another good plot element following that kind of ME3 ending is one where the Council rescinds its restrictions on opening inactive mass relays.

As long as the ending gets me at least close to crying or caring for the ending, it'll be well worth my $60.
