I'd like a happy-ish ending (in which most of my bros survive and the Reapers are defeated), but I want to have to really work for it--no free rainbows for you, Cheez!

And a mandatory "oh sh*t" ending for if you suck at the game: Reapers win, everyone dies.

This. I really wanted to see an ending that showed the Reapers defeating Shepard for the wrong choices; it would have been completely epic.

Also one where they manage to keep the relays intact - have to do something pretty difficult - insert MacGuffin or Deus Ex Machina.

Does anyone remember from the first game when its exposed that the Protheans unlocked the secrets of the Mass Relays? I mean, they probably could be rebuilt.....

That being said, the ending of the series wasn't that bad. I know a lot of people said it sucked. I mean, in a world of COD endings (YEAH 'MERICA) this one was quite refreshing. Its nice too see that a mainstream game company can actually come out with an ending that makes you think and talk about it for days on end.

Life is rarely black and white, and the ending of ME3 is the very definition of this.

I would have loved a Happy ending. To not have a happy ending to end up with Kaidon, no affairs on Mass effect 2, and for what? All her dreams were totally destroyed, left with regrets, on the way things should have been, seemed so heartless. Image IPB

But I have to say the RPG playthrough was simply amazing.Image IPB
Not to crazy about multi-player.

Oh well, need to start a new character with renegade choices and see the results. Image IPB

This franchise has the powerful themes of self-sacrifice and Fighting the Long Defeat running through it from beginning to end.

These are powerful and do not lend themselves easily to "happy" endings but they do lend themselves to endings that resonate. And the most powerful stories we tell ourselves and that are remembered by history have them both. Frodo saved Middle Earth for everyone but himself.

I believe that the ME teams have firmly removed the adjective "just" from "video game" and, being trail-blazers in that regard must now withstand the shouts from the crowds, as they sally-forth, to turn back, that horrible mistakes have been made, that the old ways are better.

I applaud the Mass Effect teams their achievement in story-telling within an interactive environment. You have shattered a ceiling and now, maybe, games can leave society's dismissive "oh, it's just a game" behind and start to create those games that will become memorable not because they are fun but because they are art.

There will always be shooters and the rpg's that one can play through and not really be asked to think but, just as now in film we have the full range of entertaining romps to flilms that show us the darkest corners of our hearts. The former pay for the latter, but both are important.

The ending I achieved in my first playthrough caused me to sit back and catch my breath. And reach for tissues.

And I am going back for more. What can I say? Maybe I can create a "better" ending.

Thank you so much for this experience.

Truly beautiful game.

The ending was so sad though. Virtually all the galactic forces stranded in the Sol System, your friends marooned on some unknown planet, and apparently there's an ending where Shepard lives, but any way you slice it, all he's doing is rebuilding earth with strangers! Everyone he knows was on the Normandy (Side note: how did they get into FTL? Were they running an errand somewhere or what?) and they're a fair distance away!

"I'm Commander Shepard, and welcome back to the Stone Age."

I would have prefered a more... Sequel open ending. Now its pretty much certain that Mass Effect will never get a Sequel. I mean even the mass relays are destroyed so only Prequels are a possibility. Possibly the first contact war or something a like.

Or maybe they will fix this in time and create something like a true ending.

But it was great... even epic... but a lot better with a true good ending. saving everything and keeping the mass mass relays intact so Mass effect could have a Sequel.

Well on the other end however. Mass relays can be recreated... so maybe there is still hope. :o

To make things short...
I WANT A SEQUEL!
(and if not possible maybe a
Prequel... but I really prefere a
Sequel)

Shepard will be dead but that leaves a world with endless possiblieties. Maybe something like they done in Dragon age: Orgins. Choicing your own race and stuff (as long as they don't make a ****ty
Sequel like they did with DA 2). Just think of the coöp option and story possiblieties... pretty much endless on that part.

I want a happy ending. I want a completely depressing ending.

There should be an ending for complete victory and there should be an ending for total defeat, plus several endings along the way. There should also be significant variants to each of THOSE endings. Finally, there should be a DA:O style epilogue regarding the surviving characters, and for that matter, the dead characters and their legacies.

What I don't want is a ridiculous and stupid ending in which a God comes from the Machine and explains that he sicks the synthetics on the organics because otherwise, all the synthetics will kill the organics.

I want the Godchild gone, disacknowledge, disavowed, removed from all Mass Effect lore and memory.

And then... I want Shepard to kill Harbinger.

First off, I don't even know what you mean by "CoD endings."  The ending of CoD4 had everyone but Soap and maybe Price dying.  All of their work, Gaz's death, Griggs' death, the whole team's death was just reported as "possible leadership struggle within the Ultranationalist party."  It was one of the more cynical endings of any game focused on war.  And MW2, despite having an atrocious plot, certainly didn't have the good guys pulling off some sort of astounding victory and saving the world in the name of America.  Especially because the only two characters alive in the ending scene were British and Scottish.  So you're just being completely ignorant.

ME3 is the very definition of black and white?  That doesn't make sense.  You can have a morally ambiguous ending, you can have 3 morally ambiguous endings.  And Deus Ex rules that category.  It absolutely grinds ME3 into the ground as far as coherence and meaning go, and Deus Ex came out in 2000.  Even Human Revolution, which is considered to have a weak ending section, at least presents 4 morally ambiguous choices, and Adam's monologue even changes depending on how you played the game.

You can also look at Bastion, which has a slightly similar ending.  You can activate the Bastion and reset the world, but it's ambiguous whether the Calamity will happen again.  Or you can abandon the old world and find a new one.  Bastion succeeds in the way Mass Effect 3 fails tremendously.  The Catalyst insists the cycle will continue, even though that makes absolutely no sense.  Despite this, all of Shepard's choices are the same.  Can't find another way, can't deny the Catalyst's "reasoning."  You get only one choice with 3 pallette swaps.

This ending would be fine if they had explained it, but all we got was Buzz Aldrin and a child talking about "The Shepard"

The endings are good, but there has to be at least a "happily ever after" ending and a total defeat where the "God" finishes what "it" started.

While the "God" character is a nice twist, the destruction of all mass relays and the crash of the Normandy is just terrible. The most positive ending should be similar to Star Wars: Episode VI, where there is a great celebration. Shepard then meets his love interest again and mourn the dead. Then before the credits, we see all homeworlds being rebuild.

BioWare just added to much philosophical nonsense in-between. It is nice to see though why the Reapers were build in the first place.

PS: watch the Stargate SG-1 episode "The Reckoning". That gives a fair idea. The Replicators are like the Reapers while the Stargates are like the mass relays and the Ancient superweapon is like the Crucible/Citadel. The weapon is reprogrammed to target only the Replicators after which everything returns to normal. While ME is much deeper and bigger than that, it is an idea.

I finally just completed the game and I loved the game, yes I think the ending is a bit off but it hasn't ruied it for me. I would love a happy ending though, one where my Shep and Kaiden can live happily ever after but failing that I think the goodbye scenes were done beautifully. I don't think I've ever had such an emotional response to a game since I found out who Revan was.

Anyway, in short I loved the game. Not the ending I would have chosen but I think because I had read these threads before seeing it for myself I was expecting way worse than I got.

Now I only have 3 hours befofe I have to be at work so I have to decide between starting a bew game or getting some sleep...

...Sod it, I'm starting a new game.

I think the endings are good. In fact the one where Shepard adds herself to the crucible is very good. However, the storyline does lend itself to an alternate ending. I mean you prove 2 different ways that Machines and Organics can live together in harmony. Shepard should point that out and the Geth and Quarians are forming a symbiotic relationship and that Joker and EDI prove that Organics and Machines can fall in love. This should throw the machines for a loop and make them come up with an alternate solution.

I'm ANGRY! Very disappointed with Bioware AND EA for Mass Effect 3, so as a dissatisfied customer I returned Mass Effect 3 for a FULL REFUND until further notice. This is also why I am using the Mass Effect 2 Forum. I wonder how many angry comments have not made in here because people have returned their games rather than register them?

Aside from my utter disappointment with the ending, I am most angered by what I believe may very well fall within the grounds of FALSE ADVERTISING bringing on legal implications.

Mass Effect 3 Collector's Edition, Page 323, "Decisions, Decisions" title, paragraph 3

"Even players without access to online multiplayer are capable of getting the best endings".

Total maximum military score gets to just above 7000 (this is in addition to DLC from previous games), but without multiplayer, this is reduced by 50% bringing the score to 3,500. Thus it is NOT possible to get the 'better' ending in the game. I filled up that bar completely, but I didn't get that particular ending I wanted.

The destroy and control ending OPTIONS are okISH, but the fact that there is no ultimate happy OPTION is WRONG. I purchased THIS GAME with MY money for the FLEXIBILITY of the STORYLINE. If you want a FIXED story you might as well just watch a MOVIE.

The SYNTHESIS option is TERRIBLE though. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE as a solution! It's stated that the REASON the reapers exist in the first place is to GIVE THE YOUNGER races a chance to RISE in the galaxy. But How does SYNTHESIS help THAT? I'll tell you how... It does not! The REAPERS would STILL need to KILL off everyone to give the YOUNGER races a CHANCE!

Finally, WHY was the NORMANDY travelling in the MASS RELAY in the ending in the FIRST PLACE? Wouldn't they have been prepared to PICK SHEPHARD UP? OR Should they not have been in the FIGHT?

At the very least I think that people could rest easy regarding what happens to the fleets that helped you. The 'Destroy' blast wiped all AI and would have fried all circuitry etc, but if the fleet had all the galaxies top scientists, then like the protheans in Mass Effect One, they would be able to build their own mass relay/ relays on Earth from the billions of tons of scrap metal and other equipment from all the ships/ dead reapers etc. these relays would be one way to begin with, but this would gradually expand and develop, and Earth would more than likely become the new galactic center like the citadel was before. Very harsh killing off The geth and EDI though, however....

I am fairly sure... No I'm certain that Bioware WILL release 'happy ending" DLC eventually for those who want the CHOICE of a happy ending. It's just sad to think that you will have to pay extra real world cash to achieve the ending. This has been set up on purpose as a marketing ploy clearly. Everyone can see that. A LOT of people are returning this game or cancelled their preorder. I know 4 people who have in the past couple of days. This game could be the next Project Gotham Racing 3 (You know, 20 plus pre-owned copies of it in the stores). Give it 2 months.

I am disappointed, but I am confident that the issues the majority of customers will be addressed. After all, for an organisation that has clearly shown it is full of greed, what's a couple of months extra work to win back the loyalty of its fans in order to correct their profits? They don't even NEED to change their options, they just need to ADD the BETTER ones! (And allow Shephard a 'happily ever after" story with his love interest. I mean come on guys and girls, seriously!!)

I can see the name of the game too... Mass Effect 3 - Redemption (And all you have to do is pay another $105.00.... WOW!!!)

To
Bioware, I understand that this game is your baby and that you have all
constantly received praise for the game up until this point so this may
be really difficult for you to listen to, but we WANT this to be a
GREAT game. It is currently at a level, which the majority find
unacceptable. PLEASE fix it, change it, add to it. MAKE IT BETTER.
MAKE IT RIGHT. If you do, I will come back to you. As loyal customers
though, we need YOUR loyalty too and THAT requires that you NOT ONLY
LISTEN to feedback, but ACT ON IT!

Thank You   kind of...

Sums it up nicely.  Lots of Speculation from Everyone works great in the first or second part of a triology.  Not so much a third.

ME3 deserves at least one ending that is as happy as the endings in ME1/ME2.
To do this, I recommend that Bioware cuts the part where the relays are destroyed and the end part with he Normandy, as a start.

Thats speculation, something I hope Bioware will address with their upcoming DLC.

And no, I'm perfectly happy with Shepard dying, we aint getting more stories with him starring anyway (not counting pre-ending).
