I am having trouble with this battle as a 2h warrior.  I have been using pommel strike to stun him, then scythe and mightty blow. Then I run around in circles using bolster (to regain stamina) ,then repeat. The problem is that his health goes down very slowly and he keeps  on healing when his health drops to about 50-60%.. This followed by his spinning blade attack and I don't stand a chance. I am about level 17 atm.
Have you got any useful tips?

Then you may be screwed.

Just hit and run,  use the pillars to keep your distance. If you have dog, use him! He helped me out a lot when my power got too low.

yeh I think I had a good technique going with the pommel /scythe/mighty blow combo. i have a dog too, which I have forgotten to use. I do have multiple saves, so I am not that screwed.

It's definitely going to be an uphill battle with only one health potion, but it can be done. Just keep running around but always move the camera so you can see him from behind you. And when he's getting ready to do that charge attack, move out of the way and strike him when he has his back to you for those few moments. Don't get greedy, only hit him once or twice then start running again...Just do this over and over and you should have him beat in a half an hour or so,haha.

Someone did an excellent comic in Deviant Art that explains the battle very well. It is a whole lot of you getting 1 whack in, then running for your life, 1 hit in, and repeat. Best bet is to get him to charge, hit a wall then hit him. Use the dog, (poor dog deserves a big bone after the fight) and enjoy your epic duel of 30 minutes plus.

Yeah. Hit-and-run for 15 minutes. Meaning hit once and run for 30 seconds. The most annoying battle in the game.... I wish there was a mod that cut his hit points by 3/4.

Knowing the Qunari it's probably both.

"Attention all Qunari of the chef role. Try new improved Aristok sauce today. Fulfill all your roast dinner and BBQ role needs in one handy bottle. Buy now, the Qun demands it."

"I escaped from the Qun because I did not like the changes made to my role as a chef. Who mixes gravy and barbecue sauce, seriously!?"

One potion? Wow. I don't think you can make it..... maybe if you're timing is really good.... and you are really, really lucky. There are a couple of tricks you can use.

When he runs towards you, don't run away from him. Running away from him makes the fight even longer and it makes it more difficult to correctly place yourself for your hits. Run towards him instead. Run at an angle going to either his right rear or his left rear passing him at arms' length. This causes him to stop and swing.

His swing motion is slow. You should be able to get a couple of swings or an ability or two in if you stop just behind him and to the side. You can run back and forth like this for a while. It even works against his bull charge attack.

If your placement becomes off, or there is nor room to run towards him after using an ability or something, then another trick, or cheat, is to use the pillars. Get him so that he is chasing you around one.

If you can get him close to the pillar you can hit him through it while he won't usually even swing. When he does his bull charge, he should run right into the pillar and stop. There is a pause there where you can get more hits in.

Switch from pillar to pillar if he gets too close to you or if your placement becomes eschewed from using abilities. Once you get a rhythm going, stick to it. But don't force it. Change from running back and forth passing him to running around the pillars.

Good luck.

This fight will take a lot longer than 15 minutes as a warrior on hard/nightmare difficulty. I spent that much time just getting him to 2/3's of his health before calling it quits and changing my dialogue option to simply kill all of the qunari as a party.

Well that's why I use Pommel Strike. So I can stun him and get in quite a few hits.

oh and I am playing on normal. Stunning him seems to work well. Just out of interest, what is the advantage of dueling him for Isabela? I take it that if you decline the duel, you and your party just kill him?

If you decline the party fights the Arishok + his guards.

More "cinematic" I suppose.

If you decline the duel you also get slightly different dialogue from Varric and Cassandra in the framing device.

@Moro200:

Take a look at this video by Sabresandiego.

He is playing on Nightmare with a vanguard 2h-weapon build.  He uses similar concepts to what I mentioned above.  He is definitely a lot braver and a lot better at it than I am.  He sticks closer to the Arishok than I did.  He circles the Arishok where as I ran in and out in a more linear fashion

If you watch closely what he does, it will give you a better idea on how to perform those "tricks" I mentioned.  Give it a try on your Normal game.

Good luck.

Duelled him for the third time on Normal today. First time was mage and it seemed to take aeons ... second time was with rogue and it was very, very quick thanks in part to Decoy, which seems to confuse him entirely, and this latest was with S&S templar warrior. I actually think it took 45 mins! ... that's knowing the tactics, applying poisons and using a full stack of potions. This is a fight that really separates out the Hawke builds.

use your closing attack. that when your coming at some one and you jump at them. but only use that. if dont run away be fore his animation starts he'll hit you. you can use pommel strike and stun him and whale on him alittle bit to.
