Why is that? Because it doesn't fit into a certain beauty ideal?

I wouldn't call Varric or Oghren fat.

Lloyd in Redcliff was fat, he certainly had a belly. Several dwarves seemed on the chunky side to me, probably because they are short but still.

There were fat people in Origins yeah, not sure about DA2 though. And besides it's not like all of the NPCs you meet are actually good looking. there is a fair share of uglies in Thedas.

It turns out this is what the Tevinters were doing all those years ago.
It took turning a city into a massive glyph and sacrificing thousands in blood magic rituals to tear into the fade itself, but they achieved their goal: No fat people in Kirkwall, ever!

Yes. It is because bioware hates fat people.

DA2 kinda shrunk and streamlined every body-type, so I think you're right on a lack of heavyset people there, but DAO had a generally higher weight / bulk to a lot of the characters just milling around. They looked normal, not as stylized as in DA2... then again, I have to say playing DAO again I really notice how plain the elves look in comparison without the super stick-like frames and giant jewel eyes.

I didn't see any fat women ever, in origins or II.

Brood mothers don't count.

How REALLY fat do we want them to be?

I mean, we're discussing a society that still has to kill things they want to eat somewhat directly. Farmers. Mill workers. Hunters... these professions do not really permit one to be drastically out of shape. The nobles might have been heavier, or shop keepers... but I'm guessing they don't have a lot of fatty foods available to them other than luxury items. Weight ratios are not going to be reflective of the present day.

So it was kind of like Full Metal Alchemist but with lower expectations?

I think the portrayal of the monarchs(weight-wise) in the series isn't really realistic. Compare Henry VIII to Calian or the Viscount, and see what I mean.

It's not meant to be "realistic". Henry VIII didn't have to fight darkspawn/quanri for starters.
