@ varcety
"isn't really realistic" isn't adequate. There where many not fat monarchs.
The lack of fat people didn't occur to me until now, but: THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

How REALLY fat do we want them to be?

I mean, we're discussing a society that still has to kill things they want to eat somewhat directly. Farmers. Mill workers. Hunters... these professions do not really permit one to be drastically out of shape. The nobles might have been heavier, or shop keepers... but I'm guessing they don't have a lot of fatty foods available to them other than luxury items. Weight ratios are not going to be reflective of the present day.

I think the portrayal of the monarchs(weight-wise) in the series isn't really realistic. Compare Henry VIII to Calian or the Viscount, and see what I mean.

Henry VIII was very athlectic when he was a young man and only got fat in his older years

who cares really it's just a fantasy game, that's not trying to be realistic.

It's not meant to be "realistic". Henry VIII didn't have to fight darkspawn/quanri for starters.

Your point only valid about Calian, as the Viscount was an armchair politician.

the Viscount was clearly a nervous older man past the prime of his life where he may have been militarily active (Sebastian points out that as the youngest son of his royal house he was in charge of the militia) and probably has a poor diet due to stress both at home and in his city.  He looks sickly actually if you look at him.

Twas the meat. Parasites are good for the fashionably chic.

And please, less Henry VIII. He repulses me with an intensity that borders on the illogical. lol Blech!

This could be true, but what about his son?

His son is a healthy young man who takes long walks along the coastline and camping trips with Qunari friends, why would he be out of shape?

3 years has passed since his Qunari friend has died.
Mental depression and spoiled lifestyle breeds obesity.
He should have been fat!

My general point is we're discussing a world where everyone and their mother has a weapon on them pretty much at all times, from the dockworkers to the nobles who attend Landsmeet in full armor. Being fit and able to be physically effective seems to be a highly valued thing in this society, so I wouldn't expect a high occurrence of obesity. That might change as we move into less "rustic" areas of the world - the capitol of Orlais for instance, where things are likely comfortable, possibly.

Henry VIII had syphilis, it is very unlikely that he would have been large at all. He told artists to draw him huge, to make him look more powerful and threatening.

I don't know. I mean, you have Hubert. An Orlesian merchant and mine owner sitting on his ass all day probably eating cheese and drinking wine as Orlesians do and he still has the body of a greek god just like everybody else.

The progressively larger armour suits crafted to fit his ever expanding girth don't lie though..

What evidence is there that the man lives a "spoiled lifestyle"?  WE see him often standing around in the Hall, but presumably he doesn't just stand there all day long, every day - despite the failings of programming to have him running around doing his usual chores all day long in the background.

Becuase he is in the right social standing to afford spoiled lifestyle.

Vaughn calls you a fat cow if you leave him in his cell!  It's all in the eye of the beholder.

The woman in the starmetal random encounter was portly.

That's hardly conclusive.  He was an activist who went against his politically powerful father on an unpopular idea - that doesn't paint him as the type to sit around enjoying his station and popping decorative chocolate tidbits all day.

It's not only ugly, but unhealthy too.

Also, in a medieval setting only rich people could afford to get fat.

I think the opposite; that because he is the son of the most powerful man in the city, he can go on rebelious teenage adventures without facing any consequences

Which is valid, but still doesn't make him idle or give him any diet proclivities that would lead to obesity.
