I know this is hardly an interesting topic, but I was kind of curious since Keran, an initiate, had a sister that he was trying to support. I just wanted to know how much an initiate, a knighted Templar, and so on might expect to make in terms of salary. I know the Chantry keeps the Templars in line with lyrium so it would hardly matter. Also, do all the Templars in Kirkwall live in barracks at the Gallows?
How much do Templars get paid exactly?

The Templar are fairly militant so I imagine that they would live in barracks. Yes, they use lyrium to keep them in line but they still have to pay people. I'd imagine it isn't much but I've seen E-1 support families with multiple kids.

5 pence an hour. But they really get paid in hookers (mages) and blow (lyrium).
For a serious answer: A regular knight probably gets paid nine to twelve gold pieces a year.
For a more serious answer: I don't think BioWare has considered the economy in depth.

In gallons of Lyrium.

Haha, they certainly have enough money to get hookers at the Rose in Kirkwall. But Hawke was able to afford them pretty quickly.
@lockdown -- Well, I'm not sure about the ones in Ferelden, as not all of them reside at the Circle, obviously, and Wesley was married. Of course, I think I read somewhere that the spouses of Templars so need to be financially independent, so maybe that has something to do with it?

I was wondering this too when I thought about Meredith and the lyrium idol. Sure, she's the commander, but still... that thing was supposedly worth a fortune. How did she afford it? But then I realized: It's Meredith. She probably just found a way to make money by lighting puppies on fire.

They're highly trained professionals, so it should be pretty high.
Putting it in money terms is hopeless - there are times when a few silver is suggested to be a lot, and there are times when 5 gold is seen as a sensible amount to dish out to random beggars.

I'm guess that they have to pay them something. Yes they are kept in line with lyrium, but you still have to pay someone for their services. It can't be much but I've seen E-1s support families with multiple kids and they make nothing for money.

Sorry for the double post, didn't notice the first one actually posted.

Presumably Meredith skims the funds generated by the Circle's enchanters and runecrafters.
A little book fiddling here and there and if anybody questions it.. well they're obviously a blood mage.

If the Templars are like many pre-modern military institutions, a Knight-Commander would probably be from nobility.
Scratch that, she talks about being from a family in a village, doesn't she?
Meredith: "Execute him before he turns into an abomination!"

In Meredith's case, since she has the Viscount and many other things under her thumb, I'm sure her obtaining money would be no problem. I would also think that Templars would get paid a substantial amount -- nothing that would afford them a heck of a whole lot, but apparently being knighted alone would allow them to support family members and all that.
@Maria: Yeah, she was an orphan who more or less worked her way up.

Why they don't pick up extra cash looking in barrels for moth eaten scarves I don't know. My Champion made a very good living by doing so.

Or they are being controlled by one.

However much they're paid, they apparently get paid enough to visit an upscale brothel like The Blooming Rose "a LOT."

I think it was mentioned that Keran had visited the Rose along with Wilmod, and they were both initiates making some kind of pay, just not really enough for Keran to supoort his sister very well.
How irresponsible of you, Keran. I'll forgive you because you're so adorable.
