"It's the lyrium". Perfect excuse, your point is refuted.

Haha. But... but... blood mages are human too!Kerridan Kaiba wrote...
That. (What The Angry One said anyway.)
Seriously though. I did learn that the Tevinter Imperium is someplace I want to go so I can start ****. Then again maybe not. Everyone there is a blood mage too.
There was some new stuff in the codex, but I agree that there weren't a lot new creatures. The landscape looked kind of dull. The copy and paste environments didn't help either. That kept me from the idea that I actually explored a new area. If it was breath taking and totally new every corner I went then I am sure I would have felt differently about DA2.

And at the end of the second installment, everything goes completely to hell. Sadly, there's no Fenris in a gold bikini.

1. Apparently all mages use blood magic
2. #1 probably happens due to an accident shaving
3. never trust the words of a dwarf without a beard
4. being a mage provides instant knowledge of kung fu
5. Tevinter mages give their slaves powers for killing mages
6. Every single person will inevitably go crazy and try to kill me
7. Apostates run around flaunting their magic
8. Hero status is more important than apostate bloodmage status
9. If you date an elf, you will find yourself experiencing time in a non-linear fashion
10. and most importantly, if someone has their mouth sewn shut, for the love of the maker don't let them speak to you!

when the Knight-Commander goes crazy and kills all the younglings--I mean, annuls the Circle--she gets a cool red lightsaber that even makes swooshy noises.
She also gets robots.

-We got to know a new place. Prior to DA2 very little was known of the Free Marches or its relation to Ferelden, let alone a close knowledge of one of its cities.
-Development of Qunari lore. We found out more about their society and actually met more of them and talked to them. We met their mages and learned how they see mages. We also learned more about their conflict with the Imperium.
-We met our first NPCs from Tevinter and learned more about that society.
-Ditto for our first Nevarran, and learned about the Seeker order and other factions in the Chantry and mages.
-Fade dreamers.
-We learned more about the Dalish, from details like the name of the Origins Dalish PC's clan to how magic functions in Dalish society.
-We learned that Kirkwall is possibly the site where the Tevinters penetrated the Fade, and that nearby is the site of the last stand of Arlathan elves.
-We learned the dwarven society is older and more complex than the dwarves themselves know/ admit.
-Grey Warden developments: Avernus' story is advanced, and so is the Architect's.
I could go on but it's time for me to visit the Fade myself.

Taking into consideration what Morrigan said at end of witch hunt, felemeth on sundermount, sandals at hawks estate... there is going to be a big time magicial turmoil ( can't think of better word) where I believe both the hero of dao and da 2 will play a big roll... just can't figure out how Bioware is going to implement it.
