(No major spoilers, please!)

According to the Dragon Age wiki, Origins should be played in an "ideal order" that they've listed. It goes like this:

1. Ostagar and Korcari Wilds
2. Lothering
3. Circle Tower
4. Redcliffe Village and Redcliffe Castle
5. Brecilian Forest
6. Haven
7. Denerim and Orzammar in either order you prefer
8. Landsmeet and the rest of the game

I'm up to #7 now and have chosen Denerim. The thing is, I can't seem to find anything to do here, aside from a bunch of side quests. Aside from a stop here earlier in the game for the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest, I can't seem to find anything to do now related to the main quest. Am I missing something, or should I just go to Orzammar now?

There isnt anything you can really do in Denerim before the landsmeet. Just a bunch of side quests.
so go to orzammar.

I had a feeling that was the case. Thanks.

There are some things to do in Denerim...
You mentioned side-quests but not which ones you found (or what class your Character is)
I don't want to spoil anything for you...just make sure you check all the rooms in the "Gnawed Noble" Tavern.

You could go to Denerim right after Lothering, if just for the shops. Aside from all of the side quests, Denerim mainly comes into play during the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest, and later during The Landsmeet.

Really, the ordering should be:
7. Orzammar
8. Deep Roads
9. Denerim (after visiting Red Cliff Castle)
10. Landsmeet

Yeah, I already have the Dragon/Drake scale armors. I've finished the Landsmeet now and I'm heading into the final battle. Wish me luck!

personally I don't think there really is an ideal order, one of the many great things about the game is you can pick and choose the order. some things will even be different depending on the order (a few sidequests for example if you do them after the landsmeet, especially the Pearl trap)

I find it fun and hilarious to do the Sacred Ashes before even going to Redcliffe.

The ideal order thing is a reference to level scaling and difficulty.
Try recruiting the Dwarfs right out of Ostagar, and prepare to get your ass kicked.

depends on your difficulty level really. on anything other than nightmare it's not too much of a problem if you're familiar with the class and tactics

I did finish the game a few days ago, absolutely loved it. Not only do I plan to play through again with several more characters, I'm thinking of getting Dragon Age 2 eventually as well. I'm curious though, is there an ideal quest order for that game too? Or does it not use the same level scaling as DA:O?

DA2 uses a completely different system. I'd recommend playing through Awakening and all the DLC as well before trying DA2. I'd also strongly advise reading up on DA2 and trying the demo before deciding to buy it purely on Origins strengths. they are very different games and DA2 will not necessarily appeal to you just because you liked Origins. it might, it might not

Dragon Age 2 kind of walks you through everything and tells you almost exactly where to go. Good or bad, you're pick.

Oh, I am. I've already gotten quite a bit into Awakening with my main character, and I finished Witch Hunt. I'm also working my way through Leliana's Song with another character. I plan to play every bit of DA:O that I can before I move on to a whole new game (DA2). I did try the DA2 demo though and enjoyed that. It is indeed quite different from DA:O, but I had fun with the demo. Definitely going to explore all I can with DA:O first though, and likely wait for the price on DA2 to drop. $60, for me at least, is a bit steep.

just a note since you say you finished Witch Hunt but not Awakening. if you want to import a 'full' playthrough (ie: Origins, Awakening & all DLC) it has to be in the order of Origins -> Awakening -> Golems -> Witch Hunt
once you import into Witch Hunt for example, you can't import out of that and into anything else but DA2

currently it's not a huge issue though as the imports don't have a huge effect on DA2 (some dialogue and cameos will be different and a few sidequests) plus there's a few bugs in importing still. but personally I'm hoping there'll be more significant effects of importing in future content

OP

you should play through in whatever order you feel like doing it in, makes the game feel a lot better and less organized which is a eerie feeling, apposed to DA2.

Of course you can, but it's just there as like a guideline Image IPB for anyone who wants to try. Dragon Age 2 yeah you don't really get a choice of order.

Well, it was my first playthrough, and also my first "real" RPG. I kind of wanted (and perhaps needed) a bit of a safety net going into this. Now that I'm more familiar with the game and its mechanics, the style of gameplay, I will likely play a bit more freely the next time around. But prior to DA:O, my only RPG experience was with Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. Those tend to focus much more on action than on strategy, and you've just got the one person (yourself) to focus on. In Dragon Age, you've got up to 4 people with possibly 4 quite different tactics, depending on their classes, that you need to worry about. It can seem a bit intimidating to an RPG newbie like myself, so that's a large part of why I wanted to play the game in the suggested order. That level-scaling based on specific areas really helped not only to keep my character alive, but also kept me from getting frustrated and giving up on the game. I was getting slaughtered on casual before I'd known the game had level-scaling, or what that even was. Once I started playing in the "correct" order, the game became infinitely more enjoyable and much less of a frustrating nightmare of repeatedly dying and not understanding why.

Anyway... thanks for all the replies, everyone. Much appreciated!

:D

Personally... I always do the circle tower first. Wynne is the only healer besides The Warden in th game, & you should never be without a healer.

What has worked best for me is:

Lothering.
All the in game dlc for Origins (Soldier's Peak, Stone Prisoner, Return to Ostagar)
Then I usually do quick jump to Denerim to do only Leliana companion quest.
Redcliffe Village and Castle.
Circle Tower and get mages to help Connor from there.
Back to Redcliffe Castle to help Connor.
Denerim, do all that is available there at that time.
Haven, get the ashes, kill dragon if you can, if not come back after few levels for dragon.
Brecelian Forest.
Orzammar.
Landsmeet and rest.

IMO the most logical order is
  • Ostagar and Korcari Wilds
  • Lothering
  • Sulcher's Pass/Honnleath or Soldier's Peak (The Stone Prisoner and Warden's Keep DLCs, respectively)
  • the other one from 3.
  • Bann Loren's Land (Return to Ostagar)
  • Redcliffe Village + Castle up to the point where the help of the Circle Mages is suggested
  • Circle Tower (return to Redcliffe Castle afterwards)
  • Haven (return to Redcliffe Castle afterwards)
  • Brecilian Forest or Orzammar
  • the other one from 9.
  • Denerim
  • Landsmeet + the rest
Also, take a break from playing Origins and play through Leliana's Song once you've done her personal quest in Origins, then continue with the main campaign.
