"If someone offers you clams, just say no. The last time I had clams on the docks, I was sick for a week."

Which is a bit silly when you think about it. Before you steam a clam, you make sure it's shell is closed (If it's opened, tap once. Toss it if it doesn't close.) and opened after you've finished cooking.

Clams are remarkably hard to get sick off if you pay a bit of attention, and as she's a sailor, Isabela probably knows how to prepare seafood.

Anders' look has nothing to do with his personality. I like the glowing spirit possession aura thing too. It makes him memorable, though evidently not as memorable as having a feathery coat that looks like a crow in the middle of anting.

Having a look be iconic is about being instantly recognizable to the player and establishing a visual association with that character. That's something I thought DA:O's companions lacked, but DA2 made up for. One company that's actually fantastic about iconic visuals is Capcom. Just by looking at silhouettes, many people can recognize folks from Capcom's cast of characters. That's what Bioware is going for, characters you can pick out of a lineup even if you can only see their shadows.

Isabela is too much of a **** for me. I find her quite a childish character, because I don't remember a single conversation that did not mention sex. A mention of ships here and there, but other than that she seems to have no other interests. She is my least favourite character in any Bioware game.

These are just Dragon age:

1. Morrigan
2. Leliana
3. Merrill
4. Isabela

I don't think she prepared the clams herself. Isabela seems to be the type who eats other peoples' clams. [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/uncertain.png[/smilie]

They only take a couple minutes to cook. If she didn't want bad clams, she could have watch them be prepared. It's the same as in Maine or Oregon, the clammers will bring them in, and then cooks steam them right in front of you.

Or she could have just gotten fried clams.

It occurred to me that because of the Lowtown foundries, the waters around the docks probably have industrial run off that the clams absorb. That's probably why she got sick.

Yeah, I love the feathers.  I'm a huge parrot lover though so I'm biased.  ...  Well, unless he got those feathers from a live bird.  Then I'll cut him.  ...  Eh, I doubt it, he's clearly a cat lover and most animal lovers at least respect all species.

I don't know, I'm not entirely sure we should be emulating the company that created such classics as Magnet Man.  Or no, this thread is full of innuendo already.  If I've got to bring up a bad Megaman villain, it must be... HARD MAN.

Hrm.  I was going to insert a pic of the ridiculous tool, but I thought better of it once I typed "hard man" into the Google window and realized what would happen if I hit the return key.

Isabela's never been one to look too closely at the snacks she eats.

(regarding the op) I adored Merrill's childlike behavior. Now that I am (technically) an adult, I am desperately trying to hang onto my "inner child".

Think of it this way - how often, as a child, did you look at an mundane object or location and imagine something 100x cooler than reality? Trips to the Hospital became an adventure (to be fair, my childhood hospital was extravagant compared to most), shopping for toys and candy was like winning the lottery (you never worried about how much an item might cost you), and even ordinary objects like a box of crayons became a canvas of creativity (I imagined the "bright" colored crayons to be heroes fighting against their evil "dark" counter-parts). Today a trip to the hospital is boring, shopping tends to cause unneeded stress, and a box of crayons is simply a box of crayons. Wheres the fun in that?

That is why I adore Merrill, and that is why I detest the concept of "conforming" into an adult. The mind of a child is easily one of the most amazing things I've had the pleasure of experiencing in this world, and that I hope stays with me for the rest of my life.

As a female I agree that maybe the guys got the shaft on this one. But the minute I saw Merrill I thought she was adorable and I wanted to get my female Hawke to seduce her. Unsurprisingly she didn't really pick up the hints as fast as I wanted and I settled for Anders. She's wiser than she seems. When asked, "What's going on here," after being confronted by a Dalish before entering the caverns she says, "Nothing. Just Ignorance.." I think that's a pretty mature answer. She's resigned to her fate, but steadfast in her beliefs. It sounds like a lot of people I know. Don't confuse a bubbly personality and rambling for being a child. She's a woman, and just happens to be absolutely adorable.

If I had the chance I would go for Aveline as a female Hawke. I think she's strong, believes in doing the right thing and would be a person I could realistically like in real life.

Anders, while he was whiny and dead set on killing a bunch of people, was a good romance. It almost broke my heart when I had to kill him. On my current play through I'm going after Fenris, he's dark and sexy. Mmmmmm.

The romance options in DA2 have tons of baggage all around. They just don't really have their **** together. I'd love to be the psychologist to take a peak in their brains.

Perhaps the less innocence you have, the more you tend to value it in others.

I think the illusions to Merrill as a jail-bait figure, or one who inspires improper thoughts concerning juveniles are wildly overblown.

For instance, the way she relates to the keeper, that kind of child-like "I know what's what" definace; that is not something that is even mildly endearing when done by an actual child, but at the same time it is wildly attractive when done by a woman.

Even more considerate is that she drops the whole notion if you have issue with it.

See that's where the game fails. I wanted a ****ty mage and a bloody pirate.

Then again the guy choices are whiny mage, whiny elf and chantry boy. Aren't labels fun?

Disclaimer: So far I've romanced (and enjoyed) Isabela, Merrill and Fenris.

If I live to be 100, I'll never understand the gaming community's "whiner" attitude.  It doesn't matter what utter horrors a character has been through, if they voice any dissatisfaction they're a whiner.  "So my best friend turned into a blood demon then raped and killed my wife and kids, then ate happiness from the world?  Well that kind of sucks."  "GOD I'm so sick of these crybabies!"

I like 'whiners' in games from a roleplaying perspective. At least I liked Carth and Alistair. Don't know about Anderes though, because he's like:

"So, Aveline, I've heard you're not up to your championing the rights of mages quota this week. You're lagging behind the others." :?

Good to hear someone else doesn't write them off.  I didn't even notice Alistair complains until someone pointed it out to me.  He's still one of my favorite characters.  ...  If they ruin him like they did Anders, Justice, and Leliana I will nerdrage hard.  :(

Anyway, he's kind of got a point on Aveline.  She is a jackass sometimes, especially on mages.  I haven't taken every character to the Fade in the Night Terrors quest, but she's the only one I've seen that doesn't apologize for betraying Hawke.  Then she actually says maybe the Gallows is a good idea.  I wanted to punt her in the head after that.  And I thought Wynne was a pain...

Well, it's funny when he gets beaten down verbally.  Which is pretty often; I'm fairly sure Barkspawn the mabari can outwit him.  He himself though, is completely devoid of any redeeming qualities.

There's a reason the term "man-child" exists ya know.
