I've read various, somewhat random, accounts of hangs, freezes, crashes, etc. with Windows 7 64-bit. However, none of them seemed to exactly match what I have been seeing.
The game runs perfectly fine for me except for certain points in cutscenes. I have not been able to pin down exactly what is happening or why, but I have a couple of cases that are extremely reliable to reproduce. I went through the game up to the part where you meet Nial in The Fade (where you get the forms), and the very last cutscene of that area starts to stutter, then finally completely freeze my entire system after about 15 seconds.
I tried the various "fixes", such as disabling two of my four cores, loading a previous save, then moving back to the save I had trouble with, as well as swapping to XPSP3 compatibility mode, and that seemed to let me get past that point. However, once I progressed to the part where you meet up with Zevran, I came upon the same issue without being able to get past it. The odd part is that I didn't have problems the first time I went through this same cutscene (I ended up starting over from a previous save), but now cannot get past it.
When I installed Win7 64-bit, I had a brand new HDD which is identical to the one I had XP 32-bit installed on. The way I have my system set up, I can choose which HDD to boot from, so I just copied my current save to the XP HDD, and loaded the game under XP. I had no problems at all getting past that scene, then I saved, and copied back to the Win7 HDD. So far, I haven't run into any other cutscenes to cause my system to lock up again. I've never had trouble with in-camp cutscenes. It always seems to be cutscenes which are immediately triggered following a battle.
The strangest thing is that these after-battle triggered cutscenes seem to keep showing whatever spell effects were going on during the battle. For example, if I start up Blizzard, it will continue going off during the cutscene if it has not run out before the battle ends. Maybe all of that has some effect on this issue, since I never see this in camp or during cutscenes that I trigger by clicking on someone.
I do have the Toolset installed on both the XP and Win7 HDDs.
Here are my system specs:
Asus Rampage Formula motherboard (Intel X48 chipset)
Intel QX9650 CPU
4GB DDR2 RAM
Sapphire Radeon HD 5870
Logitech G15 gaming keyboard
My sound and network are onboard, and all of my drivers have been updated to the latest levels. I also tried updating the PhysX to the latest level from nVidia, but that did not help. I've tried uninstalling my audio driver, and other various things, with no effect.
Is there any hope for a fix? Dragon Age is the only game I've ever had trouble with on Win7.
